SPECT Scan

So far this is what I've found.

A Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scan produces a three-dimensional image (tomographic) that may be added to the bone scan so that a particular part of the body can be studied in more detail. SPECT scans are often done to image the cervical, thorax or lumbar spine. If you are having a SPECT scan, it will take an extra 30 to 45 minutes.

Bone scans with SPECT may spot candidates for facet joint injection

June 6 2007, 8:18 PM

Feb 15, 2006
Houston, TX - Researchers say the challenge of identifying which patients with low back pain will benefit from facet joint injection may be simplified by using bone scintigraphy with single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) [1]. "Findings in our prospective study indicated that patients with a positive bone scan have an excellent response to facet joint injections when they are administered at the levels where the abnormalities are seen on the bone scan," researchers, led by Dr Spiros Pneumaticos (Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX), report in the February 2006 issue of Radiology.

There's more to the article but I didn't feel like copy and pasting it all.

This is one I had to update my surgeon on...he said they did them for cancer but I knew better. I don't think they do them often. I read up on them and they said they tell you if a fracture is new or old too so when I found out I had a pars defect I brought it up to him. He said it was for cancer but then he ordered it anyway and I found out when I went for a CT scan. He never mentioned it to me other than he believed it showed it was an old fracture.

Gentle hugs, Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I'm just hoping that it shows more than my MRI did.

I was reading up earlier when someone had posted about the dynamic MRI's but I've haven't been able to find anyone up this way that does them.

Hopefully this will help find some of those little bugger facet jints that are the problem. It sure beats having to just go through the facet joint injections to try and figure out wich ones are veing the pain.
