pain in the face and jaw

Hello Everyone.

I fell on the ice at work and fractured my right arm (radial head) on feb 20th. I went to the emergency room and they took an xray. The doctor who read the xray said it was not broken and keep using it as much as possible. On Feb 24th the hospital called and advised that the radiologist looked at the xray and it was broken and to come in the next day for a cast. About one week later my teeth were sore on the right side when I ate on that side. Exactly two weeks after my fall I came down with severe tooth ache. To make a long story short, after 9 dental appointments, a wisdom tooth pulled, a root canal done, I was still in pain. Dentist diagnosed it as wiplash with nerve damage to my face. Recommended physio therapy. So I get treatments on my face and arm and he also found places on my neck . I was taking ibproben for the pain. I have pain every few hours when on the meds. The ibprofen has raised my blood pressure so doctor has taken me off it and put me on amitriptiline, which is an anti depressant but says it is very useful in pain management. It has helped and she also said to take tylenol. It has been 2 1/2 months now and I am getting quite depressed with having pain all the time. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks for listening.

Hi Deb,
Sorry to hear about your fall and all of the after math from the fall. It sounds like your Doctor is doing what he can. It might do you some good to have your Doctor refer you to a Pain Doctor. I know that mine helped me through a lot of ruff patches due to the amount of pain I was in.
Take Care Deb and let me know if you go to a pain Doctor.

Hi Debra

CAC is right. If you continue to be in pain and the meds your regular doctor is giving you is not taking care of the pain, you may want to see a pain mgt. doc. There are various treatments he/she can offer you in addition to the traditional treatments that a general practitioner is capable of offering you.

Goes to show you that whiplash comes in many forms and from various injuries. Not all whiplash injuries are caused by mva's (motor vehicle accidents). We had a guy who came on here a couple years ago who fell off a ladder at work and was dx'd (diagnosed) with whiplash trauma.

I had 2 mva's-one in Nov. 2000 and the 2nd in Mar. 2001; both accidents, I was hit from behind and suffered neck and back injuries. Now, almost 9 years later, my neck pain has all but resolved after having RF's done 3x's. They say three is a charm and that 3rd one took away my pain and I rarely have any more problems with my neck-that was over 5 years ago. And I had back fusion surgery in 2006 that helped tremendously with my back pain.

Now, almost 9 years later, I still suffer from what I call secondary pain. I have severe arthritis and degenerative joint disease in all my joints. I think most people who don't recover early on from whiplash are plagued by arthritis which causes chronic pain because I believe that when you injure your joints or your discs, you hear from alot of people who eventually have premature aging like arthritis that sets in where the old injury was/is. My sis who comes on here too (Judi) suffers chronic, debilitating pain from her mva. She is 3 years younger than I am, yet she developed the same thing I have years before me because her mva was before mine. Makes sense.

Anyway, good luck to you and I hope you find some answers to your pain and pray it does not turn into chronic pain like most of us on this message board.

Love and peace,
donnaC
