Sawgrass Recreation Park was never a particularly great fishery, but wow has it stunk this year! I had heard a few anglers talking about how bad the fishing was there, so I had to see for myself. The place was DESERTED on a Sunday! The water levels were up, and the water was running strong from the north. We passed only a couple other boats and everyone had that "where the heck are the fish" look.
Sawgrass is a great place to fish, not compared to Holiday but where else does. There are fish at Sawgrass and big ones too, learn to follow the water.
Sawgrass can be equally as good as Holiday. However, it is all about water levels. I have been tracking them for years. Sawgrass water levels never got low this year. Last year, they were down below 10 feet in January and I had some awesome stringers in Jan/Feb on the flats. THis year, it never got below 10 feet and, by the time it did get to the necessary 11 feet or so it was April. Holiday Park, on the other hand, got low in Feb this year, not April, like usual. That's why the fishing has been so good at Holiday for soo long.
Don't give up on sawgrass, just monitor the water levels. At 11.5 feet in WCA 2A (Sawgrass) things get better - It's about 9.5 feet in WCA 3A (Holiday).
Usually, Sawgrass gets lowered BEFORE Holiday. This was the first time I've ever seen it the other way. Guesssing the drought and water retention had something to do with it.
