Boat Checks by Florida Fish & Game

We Fished Okeechobee on Sunday and was running the rim ditch north around MM 100, a little south of Clewiston. I see Ranger Rick sitting in the middle of the ditch waiting for anyone that comes his way. We approach him at 55 mph and he motions us to stop with his blue lights on, which we do. I had plenty of room between boats to be going that speed so I didn't think that would be an issue.

He wants to know how we're doing fishing wise and wants to see my boat registration, drivers and fishing license. Once again, no problem.. He asks permission to do a safety inspection which too is ok with me because I have everything that's required.

However, what interested me was that he calls in my registration on the radio to see if I was the owner of the boat or perhaps what I think might be if I possibly had any outstanding warrants. Since everything was valid, once again there wasn't any problems. I've been fishing for over 50 years and have been stopped and checked numerous times over that period of time, just never like that.

After thinking about what happened and speaking to my neighbor who is a Law Enforcement Agent for FDLE, this is what he told me. All State policing agencies are now tied in with Homeland Security. They are checking everyone and everything if given the opportunity. What better way to also find people with outstanding warrants when their boating or fishing!

With all the budget cuts and the state of the economy, every agency State wide is looking for ways to generate revenue dollars to make up decreases in funding.

Just a suggestion to all you boaters and fishermen/women: Before you launch, make sure you have everything needed to pass inspection and keep all your licenses and registrations up to date. You just never know when you'll get checked. I don't think Ranger Rick will be giving us many breaks anymore and will write you a ticket in a heartbeat if you're found to be in violation. If you have any outstanding warrants and think the L.E guys won't find you, think again. Govern yourselves accordingly or be subjected to bigger fines or even arrset.
