I've been doing a lot of thinking on that. The current rules in 2020 are pretty outdated, strangly the original 2013 rules are better. I haven't had a chance to get Ex Machina yet and see how they do it.
But one thing I have noticed by watching all of the tech advances of late and keeping track of them. The technology needed to 'Netrun' as done in most books of the genre is the one the furthest away. Especially after the collapse of the VR market and other setbacks.
So I've been wondering, even though it is one of the biggest staples, is it necessary for a cyberpunk genre game. I would still have computer cracking console cowboys but not via 'jacking in'. Custom written programs used to break into security systems, hacking in from various entry points into the net, etc. I'm really trying to put some thought into it.
