Hi There,

I've been asking around with different AFV discussion groups, but have received contradictory/unconvincing replies... I hope this site, being dedicated to Soviet AFVs, can advise me, please...

What are the recommended hobby colours for the following AFVs?:
(Testors, Humbrol, Tamiya in order of preference)

Soviet BMP-2/2D in Afghanistan
Sand with Green patterns

Kuwaiti BMP-2 in Gulf War (Desert Storm)
"Soviet Sand Yellow" (FS33798?)

The above can be found in Vanguard Series colour sections.

I've been recommended (so far...):
- Humbrol 83(ochre)
- Humbrol 84(Mid Stone)
- Humbrol 74(Linen)+white
- Humbrol 81(Pale Yellow)
- Light Gray(???)

I want to build a Kuwaiti BMP-2(Desert Storm) and Soviet BMP-2D(1982 Afghanistan War), but do not know what colours to use.
I hope someone in this discussion group can help me out please.

Thank you and hope to hear from you guys real sson. Warmest regards.

Francis

I don't know if this will help as I use Tamiya acrylics and I haven't tried any sand colours.

For older vehicles, I use Tamiya Khaki Drab XF-51 and for contemporary vehicles I use NATO Green XF-67. The Khaki Drab seems to be a good match for T-55s, BMP-1s, etc used in Afghanistan.

Steven Zaloga used XF-67 and XF-59 (Desert Yellow) for a Naval Infantry MT-LB variant.

John Davis used Revell 89 for a sand coloured MT-LB with spots of Revell 65.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting the colours exactly right given the harsh environment and its impact on paint.

Hi Francis,
When I did prepare instructions I used Federal Standard (FS) chips to compare to photos.
I can't tell You exact numbers for Testors, Humbrol and other companies paints, but as soon as You (or someone else) have FS catalogue, then You can choose a closest to FS ones from the paints You have.
Happy modelling!

Sincerely, Alexey.
