well i had an engine built, it has been sitting for 4-5 months now and i cant seem to turn it over. it did turn over 4-5months ago with no problems. now that it has sat it will not turn over by hand. i put some wd-40 in the cylinders and primed the engine and still wont turn over. i was thinking i might have slight rust building up on the rings. i have yet to use the starter to turn it over. also i put somewhere around 130ft lbs on the crank bolt and still wont turn over...i dont want to use anymore pressure on it and maybe cause dmg to the bolt or even break it.
anyone have an suggestions on some sort of lubricant i can use to break up the rust and not do any dmg to the engine or will i have to hook up the started and take a chance i dont do any harm?
please all feedback is welcome. thanx for your time

Re: turning over engine?

I wouldn't be using the crank bolt to turn the motor over. Use a flexplate tool to turn it over. I would try one diretion then reverse it.If you have to do that back and forth. You should be able to break it free doing that.
I am an old coot so some of you young guys don't start laughing. About 50 years ago this was a common problem with engines left standing for several months, probably due to the inferior oil and it's additives back then. So I'll tell you what we did then. Make a mixture of 50/50 motor oil and kerosene (old style penetrating oil), remove spark plugs, pour approx 6 ounces of the mixture in each cylinder, let stand for a day, then try turning via the crank bolt, if no go, wait another day, try again. We would do this for about a week and if it didn't work, it was an engine tear down. Needless to say, you would replace the engine oil. Using the starter may break the rings. Hope this helps.
well i i hooked up the starter, hit it, it threw out n thats it. didnt even move the engine. not a budge, after taking a further look it looks like the balancer is rubbing against my timing cover. i have a 2 piece timing cover. im going to remove it sometime this week and see if i can turn it over. does anyone know if there needs to be a bushing/spacer for a 2 piece timing cover? i took a light and it doesnt shine to the other side, i can barely fit a piece of paper between them and it doesnt go all the way though .... ill keep you posted
thank you guys for the advice, keep it coming i want to do everything possible before a tear down lol

stiff motor

you need to check flywheel, starter, etc.you may have to pull plugs & back off the rockers & try again,it may have valve train bind. i can't beleave a motor that only sat for 5 month is frozen, even with some cyl wall rust you should be able to turn it.hope this helps good luck DIRTY DAVE 313-381-8812
i backed up the balancer today and the engine spun just fine, its rubbing against the timing cover, i put it back on and i cant get the full 65ft/lbs without the balancer hitting the timing cover again, i have a 2 piece timing cover and im curious if there is a spacer that needs to be installed or maybe i just cant use a 2 piece timing cover? do they make a specific balancer that is longer for a 2 piece? ect....
Why do u have such a big cover on there? That thing sticks out like a wart.lol Ur gonna have to but something behind it or a different balancer that fits that 2 piece. See what that cover recomends for a balancer.
