I can't speak for the road conditions today, but in 2001 we drove a VW Eurovan over Doublespring and Horeseheaven and to within 1/2 mile of the Leatherman (Merriam Lake?) trailhead. From there, the road really wasn't bad, but we found a great campsite in the meadow. And it seemed silly to fire up the car in the morning just to drive 1/2 mile.
Then we drove out over Pass Creek
But then again, we did get TWO flat tires.LOL
