About two years ago, I started running solo at midnight for a DH and encountered two green eyes. I clacked my trekking poles together and it ran around straight behind me. It then followed me to the bridge before turning off trail. Then, to make things even better, I listened to wolves howling VERY close all the way to Elk lake. But, I am alive and still travel unarmed.
The next day when I returned to camp, there were other runners that had encountered a black bear on the Sawtooth lake trail. As far as grizzly, I have only seen the arse of one in the Frank Church as it ran away from us full bore! I have never actually seen a bear of any sorts in the Sawtooths, unless the green eyes were the black bear coming for the nightly dumpster offerings. I think they belonged to Sasquatch or an alien...
