That is part of why the locals keep an eye on it. Typically fewer folks and less fishing pressure.

The most heavily traveled fishing spots are those that have great access or are scenic. You combine a few mile hike with a lake that does not have the majestic backdrop and this is where you will typically find the locals.

You are right about the fish though. It has been about 20 years since I have heard of fish surviving the winter there. If you do catch it with fish, they are typically the same-year stockers.
