I had a miniscus repair and lateral release done in 2007. The PT guy will tell you what to do. Walking and especially cycling are good. The stationary bikes in front of the televisions at the YMCA are great.
The only bummer is that I have not been able to get seriously back into running since the surgery. It has not effected skiing, climbing, and most other things. Good luck.
