My admiration to those of you who have planned (and of course will follow through on) your 2011 goals.
I'm still trying to review and catalog travels from last year. Seems the Janus effect 'face the past and back into the future' applies to me.

One recurring goal tends to capture my imagination: Finding that last unclimbed peak in East & Central Idaho and Western Wyoming.
While not infallible, here's my list of earliest known ascents in chronological order.
Prior to 1988, my assumption was all regional peaks had been previously climbed. As I got into the exploration and research, my assessment centered around finding those 'last dozen' pristine summits.
Now, after 170~ such peaks, my best guess is that yet a dozen still remain unclimbed.
For most of this 23 year journey, I've been my own worst competitor.

I'm providing this personal information because mountaineers love lists, and maybe some of you can use this as a motivational tool also.
Good luck finding peaks that challenge and expand horizons.
Maybe you too have some firsts to share? I hope so.

Rick,

Did you forget Rearing Stallion (Pk 11280 Pioneers)in 2008? When George, John and I arrived at the summit, we discovered that you were there a month earlier. (Assuming yours was the first ascent).

Thanks for catching that one Pat. Correct, no sign of prior visitation on Rearing Stallion.

Thought my list was current, but it's not. Several peaks were missed. Let me check log books and photographic albums, then I'll post an addendum.

There are also a few ???s along the way that should make for interesting discussion.
Again, thanks.

... a good proofreader. You're good George.

The Kyrie is a frequent refrain in Greek Orthodox liturgy for seeking humbleness before the Lord.
It translates as 'Lord have mercy'. Something helpful to keep in mind on a mountain summit.

Although I've seen several other versions of the Baugher summit register, the small yellow note pad seems to be the most recognizable. I've gotten to sign as "second" on a few but Its astonishing how many summits hold the little yellow trademark.

Lemhi Quadracephalus

This is an add on to an add on, and I don't know how it got overlooked. Yes you do Baugher. It's old age staring you in the face.

At the time, June 8, 1991, I was happier than a kid in a candy store for bagging 4 Lemhi Range peaks in a day, and doing the cairn/register thing on pristine summits X 4.

From Uncle Ike Creek scramble N ridge to Buckhorn Peak 10412. Here the infamous full can of Buckhorn Beer was placed.

Next, NE to Whitebird Peak 10502. Named for 19th century mine at south base of peak, and also for the two descending snow tongues on peak's NE face.

Amid a snow squall, scramble E to Dome Peak 10475. Nomenclature borrowed from the early forgotten name of Diamond Peak, and also the name of this entire one time copper mining district.

Retraced to Whitebird. Descend N ridge and 200' below summit found initials BC in rock, and a 1983 mining claim of JR Carlyle. Mr Carlyle's given address amazingly turned out to be only 4 blocks away from my home in Idaho Falls. Shortly afterward, I made a house call, but he had previously passed away.

Continuing the hike... proceed N to Marshal's Mount 10045. Note corrected proper spelling of Marshal Bare's name- one L.
Descend SW, dodging a few cliff bands for a rewarding circular traverse. At this point, being rather parched, I recall regretting leaving that can of low brow suds up on the mountain.

2003- Hudspeth 8437 Deep Creek, Earthquake 10382 Madison MT, Wino 9645 LRR, Herd Lake Pk 9534 Shadow, Sage Creek Pk 9542 ? Shadow- an ATV track gets a little close

2005- Nemesis 9449 Cent MT- NSPSV on 6/19/05 but someone must have been up here?
North Canyon Summit 8939 Bear, Eightmile Summit 9212 ? Bear, Phelan 8905 ? SalRiv
Productid 10677 ? LRR- nearby airlifted water tank, Iron Divide Peak 9720 Lem

2006- Bradbury 8250 Shadow, Ballys 7541 ? Caribou, Mine Canyon Peak 9531 ? WKnob, South Star Hope 10493 ? Pio

2007- Cotterel Mtn 7120 ? NSPSV on 3/15/07, Apron 9382 ? LRR- NSPSV 5/1/07 but evidence of hunters 300' below, Mahogany Hill 9099 ? LRR- name of peak and quad but NSPSV on 5/30/07

2009- Champion 10121 ? WC- was it a broken down summit cairn?

There you go folks. That's all she wrote for now, but if you know ANYTHING about these peaks, kindly share.

Nice find

January 11 2011, 9:49 AM

At first glance the leather looks like a ca early 70's sheath covering for an ice ax head.
Where you found it is interesting, but until proven otherwise, this referee still calls the play NSPSV on 7/29/10.

Regarding Alcyone, yes with the e. The intent: Alcyone is the brightest star in the Pleiades star group (constellation Taurus), one of the 7 sisters (7 stars), daughters of Atlas in Greek mythology.
This particular lobe of Smiley Mtn I call Pleiades Ridge, which coincidentally has about 7 points over 11000' elevation. Alcyone, the brightest, is also the highest.

One central theme in naming these high-in-the sky Southern Pioneer places is stars and star groupings.
Other examples include: Altair, Pegasus, Andromeda, Pleione, Atlas, Starhope. To me the Southern Pioneer Mountains is a star-studded area.

Thanks for sharing your observations. It's appreciated.

Unravel a Lemhi mystery

No score for this post
January 10 2011, 10:28 PM

I am curious about Peak 9909 in the Lemhi's which is just to the northeast of West Rocky Peak 10343'.

Interested in your ascent date on that one. I visited on 9/25/2010 and the summit looked untouched after a meticulous inspection. My belief was that you had climbed all of the Lemhi 9000' peaks.

My summit register indicated that I would gladly defer to your previous ascent in the belief that all Lemhi 9000' peaks had already been climbed.

Hi Michael, I think you're a better map reader than me. I overlooked 9909' (prom 329' right?).
Thanks for sharing this info. Now I have an excuse to revisit Middle Fork Little Timber Creek, an area that's so beautiful it's spiritual, but at the same time early season travel is pure hell.

Sounds like you have a pretty methodical approach to the Lemhi Range. Any particular goals to keep you motivated?

Lemhi information

January 11 2011, 8:54 PM

Rick,

You have the right peak with it's 329' of prominence. It was the third peak of the day after Rocky Peak and West Rocky Peak. I had tentatively named it Devon Peak per the summit register with the uncertain status of prior ascent.

After reviewing some photos and looking at it from the trail on the way out, I would like to name it Devon's Tower.

If I am able to overcome some picture loading struggles, I will post some photos.

The summit register reads thus:

Michael Darcy 9-25-10
Coeur d'Alene Idaho

Route: From West Rocky Peak 10343'

Livestrong Psalm 95:3-5

I will defer to Rick B. if
he has been here before me.
I thought he had done all
the Lemhi 9000' peaks.
However, this summit looked untouched.

Respectfully named for
Devon Austin 1991-2010.

His infectious qualities
touched us all.

As to a method, I generally prefer to climb peaks that catch my interest and a variety of different ranges is the ticket as well. The one goal that has recently come to the surface has been to climb the 9 Lemhi peaks over 11000'. Although The Riddler may be beyond my comfort zone.

I am considering posting some information for you on different peaks on your FA list, but with the register robber out there lurking in cyber land, a little more thought is needed.

Earthquake 10382 Madison MT. In 2007 I was at Avalanche Lake for nearby Hilgard and others, didn't have time to head south for the group near 10382 though I would have if rain hadn't cost me a climbing day. Found cairns on UN 10820 and UN 10500 a couple miles north. Quite a few unnamed 10K peaks nearby, could be some more NSVP summits on Earthquake and Hilgard Pk quads.

Tdub, nice to hear from you.
I've only climbed a couple dozen peaks in interior SW Montana, so this is an area where I can and should expand horizons.

Care to share your peak list of this area, either complete or favorites? Am still trying to track down climb/ski history of Nemesis Mountain.
Thanks, Rick

On 5/14/03 I hiked, wallowed, then skinned to summit of Earthquake Peak (another RB name).
From summit, fixed heel ski descent of big west face bowl, an appealing line.
Slightly disconcerted to find fresh grizzly bear tracks crossing my uptrail at 8600', but we shared just fine happy.gif

Hey Rick - Always great to hear about these out-of-the-way summits you've visited, along w/ the history.

Yes, Big Sky has some neat areas. Did a lot of hiking there in '02,'03,'04, and '07, but only that one trip to the Madisons. Maybe a return in 2011? I'd sure like to - time will tell.

Peak list....nothing regional but I've got a statewise summit tally for MT here. Some faves in SW MT: Hilgard Pk(Madisons), West Goat Pk(Anacondas), UN 9439(on ID state line, Bitteroots). Plenty of better known summits still to visit but always got to make time for some obscurities as well.

I like your list, especially the Montana 12'ers.

We've crossed paths on Tweedy, Black Butte, Jefferson, Trapper.
Maybe one day I'll make it to Mount Douglas. Have some good biographical info on USGS Geographer Edward Moorehouse Douglas that should be shared at some point.
If you go back to Madison Range I'd recommend Koch Peak and Sphinx, both nice wilderness hikes/scrambles.

Keep pickin'em off!
