This smoke?

Hey guys,

Was originally planning on heading to Saddleback Lakes this weekend for my yearly Bday hike in the Sawtooths. Looking at the Redfish Webcam is showing some pretty nasty smoke, so rather than abandon the idea of a backpack trip with the wifey I was hoping to get some other ideas.

- We don't mind hiking in the evening/dark (we actually prefer it)
- Something 5 miles or less
- Scenic (of course, this is a given)
- Potential for day two (meaning it would be nice to have the option to hike to another lake and camp)
- Fishing (for boredom, not for food)

We are in Boise off Park Center and anticipate a 3+ hour drive. If you have any ideas, feel free to post. A link to a trip report would be better. Thanks guys!

Kris,

I would suggest not giving up on the Sawtooths based on what I found over this past long weekend when backpacking with my son. At upper elevations the air quality and visibility were fine. There was a bit of smoke that came in Monday morning, but it seemed to get better as the day went on. I have no idea if the same pattern will continue into the coming weekend, but it might.

Saturday had smoke in distance but clear over us:

Sunday was quite clear:

A bit of haze on Sunday, but no complaints:

Fishing was very good. Water for swimming the shallower lakes was about as warm as it gets. Ideal weather for backpacking!

Was surprised to see the flowers still out in places. They must be enjoying the late summer heat:

I also noticed hiking in the trail creek summit area last weekend that the conditions improved greatly as I gained elevation. The air quality forecasts show slightly better air quality out east right now. Maybe you could find something in the Caribou Targhee National Forest or Grand Teton National Park areas.
