Suggestions for a doctor in North California?
by
Hi there
I was crashed today after the test report came out. I got a high FSH of 18.6.
I am 38 years old. My doctor is very negative at this result and told me that nothing can be done. Could anyone help recommend a good doctor specialized in this area? I am living in north California.
I posted to your board on June 4th of this year. I had been 44 days without a period and I had been told by my ob-gyn that I had a High FSH of 83 and that I was menopause.
On July 10th I went to a reproductive endocrinologist listed as High FSH friendly on a web-site. He looked at my ovaries and found them to be half the size they are supposed to be and found a mass on one ovary that turned out to be a cy.
He told me I had very, very little chance of ever becoming pregnant, though sometimes high FSH women do become pregnant.
I was recently diagnosed with high FSH/DOR and have been doing some research online. Studies show that moderate to high levels of alcohol consumption can negatively hyphothalymic pituitary function, thereby diminishing ovulatory function. Although I've found that AMH tests aren't affected by lifestyle choices (i.e. smoking, drinking, etc.), I haven't been able to find out whether or not FSH levels can be altered by levels of alcohol consumption. However, I did find a site that claimed alcohol affected attempts at drug-induces superovulation and, thereby, should be avoided.
I was diagnosed with high FSH/DOR during a time when I would consider myself a situational alcoholic, using alcohol to "treat" my infertility related depression. I've since gotten my life back on track but am wondering if the alcohol I was consuming at the time could have led to the diagnosis.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I am so glad to have found this board. I have been looking for a board specific to this issue. I am totally confused and got a cryptic diagnosis from my OB this week. I first tested with a high FSH level about 10 months ago (10 I think) and my General Practitioner didn't even tell me! I asked for a referral to an OB and she tested my day 3 FSH and it was 13.8. I went to another doc for many reasons and tested again. I had been spotting for 4-7 days prior to my menstrual cycle for a year (ever since I went off the birth control pill!) and my new OB wanted my period to be regulated before getting too freaked out by my FSH levels. Last month I had my first period without spotting while on Clomid. My Day 3 FSH was 10.2 and my Day 10 was 17.7. I guess I was doing the "Clomid Challenge" test, but my OB never called it this. Obviously I failed the test. I do have one thing that I am confused about. My OB had me take Clomid on days 3-7 and I have been reading it should be days 5-9. I know I am blabbing.. but thank you so much for listening. Anyway, I have been referred to an RE, which I will see next week. When I got my last Ultrasound (last month), my OB said I had follicles. I ovulate but still have these levels (which I hear is common). I got an HSG test which showed everything is fine and all of my other levels are fine. Any advice? Guidance?
Does anyone know of a good acupuncturist who treats infertility in the Raleigh-Durham area? I recently turned 33 and was just informed by my RE that I have a high FSH (of 16). My husband and I have been trying to conceive for about 3-4 years now, and I have been visiting a couple of REs in the area for about 2-3 years. I have been through 3 unsuccesful IUIs and a recent failed IVF attempt that was converted into an IUI because of lack of response to stim. I am being advised by a relative (who has gone through this infertility journey herself) to take a break from IVF for about 3-4 months and try acupuncture instead. My RE wants to try a cycle of IVF with Lupron(I tried Follistim/Menopur with my first failed IVF attempt), but she is not too encouraging about the chances of success. I am very confused about the next step to take and would greatly appreciate some words of advise as well as a recommendation for an acupuncturist. Thanks!
I received this devastating news that i will have to go the egg donor route or adopt in order to have children. I did the CCT test and at day 3 i was 7.25 and day 10 was 30.1. I'm 37 and didnt see this coming at all. can i really not get pregnant with this fsh level? i'm single (in a serious relationship that will probably end up in marriage) and simply went to a fertility dr to see what my current status is. I feel normal and healthy, but this news is crushing and makes me hate my body and somehow feel like i'm "sick". Anyway, is there really no hope with a 30 FSH level?
I'm 35 and just got the news this morning that my FSH levels indicate diminishing ovarian reserve/DOR and feel just like you do. After four years of unexplained infertility we tried intrauterine insemination last month and my ultrasound confirmed that I do not produce enough healthy eggs to seriously merit IVF.
Just wanted to let yo know you're not alone. Who would have ever thought two young, vibrant women would somehow be perimenopausal?
Definitely get a second opinion and keep reading posts on this forum.
I'm so thankful for folks who create safe havens like this for those of us who are so much pain and have nowhere to go....and, once you're able to get the blues to dissipate, focus on taking good care of yourself. Our bodies may be betraying us, but if we adopt (indeed, if we're going to LIVE), we're going to need stay positive.
I'm trying to understand some high FSH readings (my doctor hasn't really told me what it all means). Is this a sign of POF? Will my chances to conceive get worse as time goes on? In August I went for some bloodwork because I hadn't gotten my period in months and my FSH level was 79. I'm only 23. My doctor was shocked and didn't really know what to make of it. So, we re-did the testing a couple of months later and it is much lower at 22 (which I am told is still high). I am currently waiting for another set of tests and will get them on Nov. 20. I'm hoping that they are considerably lower. I wonder what my chances are of that. I'm just wondering ... what does all this mean for me?
Hi. I am going through the exact same thing as you. I am 25 years old, have no children, have only my left ovary and have both of my fallopian tubes, both the left one is blocked (did an HSG)I am going to do a salpingography and a fallopian tube recanalization. My highest FSH was 23.7 and my anti-mullerian hormone test came back low 0.08. I was refused by my first RE for IVF, and was told to do donor eggs. Me and my husband were crushed and shocked. He have only been trying for one year. Finally found a doctor that is willing to treat me with IVF,but he is giving me a 5% chance. I know this must be horrible to hear. I have been crying every day for now almost 3 weeks and my whole family is crushed by the news. Pls e-mail me and we can stay in touch since we are both so young and going through the same. My old RE told me than I will reach menopause within one year, and that it only happens to 1% of women at this age. I am trying to keep up and be positive and I am very happy to be able to do IVF.
I'm not anywhere near the stage that you are in knowing all this information. My doctor hasn't told me much. My husband and I are not trying to conceive at the moment but I found out this information once I hadn't gotten my period for a couple of months and saw my doctor. I was sent to a gyn. and he did all these tests. Thats when my FSH came back at 79. I didn't know that it could mean POF until researching online. His immediate steps were to first rule out a pituitary tumour that may be causing this malfunction of the pituitary gland. I am waiting for MRI results and should be getting them on Nov. 20. I'm not even sure what I want the results to be. I'm almost hoping that I have this tumour so then it can be treated and my fertility be restored. I don't even know if it works that way. I have always known that I want to have children. It's definitely one of the most important things to me. I know how you feel about it being a hard blow. A few days after I found out this information my husbands brother announces that he and his girlfriend are accidently expecting. I was very upset.
Is it true that you will reach menopause soon? Is that what happens once your FSH levels start to rise? I have gotten my period for the last few months and that seems to be normal now but the levels are still quite high (22). I'm wondering if I should try and conceive now as maybe my chances will be higher now as opposed to later when my husband and I wanted to start trying (a couple of years). What do you think?
Also, do you have any other symptoms of high FSH? Like hot flashes etc.?
I did not have an MRI to check for malfunctions of the pituitary gland, but I think it is a good idea. I strongly advise you too go and see an RE (fertility specialist) and do the following tests: Anti-Mullerian hormone test (a more in depth FSH test to evaluate your ovarian reserve), Antral Follicle count (the can count your follicles with an ultrasound) and that can predict your fertility, have an HSG done where the insert dye into your uterus and check with x-rays if the dye flows into your fallopian tubes. I also have two DNA tests (still waiting for them to come) called Fragile X and Cyreo Type. They like to check these two DNA test on women under 25 with high FSH levels. Also do you have both of your ovaries? I have only one, and women with only one ovary has often elevated FSH levels since that only one ovary is working so hard to get you pregnant. Since you are married and have these problems I think you should talk to your husband to start trying for a baby.
I do have both of my ovaries. I have copied down all the tests you mentioned to ask my doctor about. This is the type of information I want to know. Is the test with the dye painful? Thanks a lot for all the information and help.
That is good that you have both of your ovaries. Yes, you should get as many test done as possible to make sure it can be diagnosed. Many women on the board say that the HSG exam is very painful ect. To be honest I had some cramping, mainly to the fact I think that my left fallopian tube was blocked so it caused a lot of pressure and I was very nervous and tense. But it is not that bad at all. The procedure itself does not take more than 5 min. I would have done it again, if I had to. Actually I am going to do another fancy version of the HSG to make sure if my left fallopain tube is really blocked or if it was just a spasm (sometimes that can happen when you are tense) and to see if they can remove the blocking. It is called a selective salpingograhy and fallopian tube recanalization.
Should I go with IVF or fix my blocked fallopian tube??
by
Hello. I am 25 years old and my highest FSH was 23.7. I finally found a doctor in Miami that is willing to treat me with IVF despite my high FSH levels. He said my chances are 1-3%. Are my chances really that low? I have another problem. My previous RE that refused to treat me with IVF, was only willing to do HCG injections with IUI, and she also thinks I should do a selective salpingograpy and fallopian tube recanalization since after doing an HSG exam my left fallopian tube looks blocked. My right ovary was removed when I was 14 due to an ovarian cyst. I have my left ovary with both fallopian tubes, but my left one looks blocked. My new RE thinks I should go straight to IVF and if that fails do a laparoscopy. My only concern is that if I do not do the procedure my only chances are with IVF and a "miracle baby" would not happen...Are my chances higher with IVF or if they fix my tube and do IUI? If you fail a IVF cycle, can you go to the 2nd one next month or you need your ovaries to rest for a cycle or two?? Pls any advice would be highly appreciated.
Hello. This is my first time writing on this board since I am in a desperate need of some answers. I am 25 years old and my husband is 32 and we have no children. Yesterday I was told by my doctor at South Florida of Reproductive Medicine that I am not a candidate for IVF and my success is only 1%. My highest 3day fsh was 23.7, estradiol below 20, my lowest 3day fsh was 7.7 with estradiol 262. I also did the Anti-Mullerian Hormone Test (a more accurate test to check your ovarian reserve) and it was low 0.08. Under 1 she said will fail to respond to stimulating medicine. She did the Antral follicle count as well and I had only 3 follicles (I have only one ovary). The ultrasound saw 3 growing follicles as well so she told me to come back in 2 days to see if to give me the HCG and then try the IUI.
I am writing because I am so incredible sad and hopeless, my husband as well and I do not know what to do at this point. Should I get a second opinion and in that case where should I go? I would really appreciate any advice I can get. It just seems crazy to me, that 40 year old women are getting helped but not me at 25 years old! Thank you for your support.
Hi, my OB_GYN told me about this website and i have been glued to this ever since. We are doing IVF/ICSI for the first time and when my blood tests were done on day 3 of my cycle the FSH level came to 12 which my RE said was borderline high. And she said we must move aggressively and not to waste any more time.
So i started taking the Microdose Lupron 20 units 2 times a day. On day 3rd i started taking Gonol f and menipur. I started with 375 units of Gonol f and then they increased it to 450 and now it has been increased to 525 as i was not responding to the medicines. At my ultrasound on the 8th day there were only 2 Follicles of small size.
I am 39 yrs old with FSH level of 12. I have to go for my ultrasound and bloodwork tomorrow and I am wondering if more follicles might develop till then or will they cancel the cycle this month.
Is there any hope for me considering i did not respond to the injectibles.
It has been a long time since I was a routine reader of this board. I am so glad it has continued, since it was such a source of hope and comfort for me. Though I was ultimately unsuccessful in my quest to become pregnant I am writing today to urge those of you in Minnesota to join an effort to pass mandated health insurance coverage for fertility treatments here in the state. I am copying the relevant information below, along with a message from one of the organizers. Please join us if you can! --Jodi
Dear Family, Friends, and Neighbors,
...I am writing to you because RESOLVE will be hosting three forums for Minnesotans to speak with legislators, and with each other, about expanding insurance coverage for individuals and couples dealing with infertility in the state of Minnesota and we would like to invite you to join us in attending one of these forums and spreading the word to others in your network.
According to the CDC, 1 in 8 people are affected by infertility. Look down the street where you live or down the row of cubicles or offices in your workplace.
Most likely, there are at least two homes or work spaces where the family, or individual, is suffering infertility.
Infertility is a medically recognized disease that affects men and women equally. When treated correctly, infertility has one of the highest rates of success of any disease - more than 80% of couples or individuals who complete treatment will succeed in having a biological child.
Often patients select treatment based on what is covered by their insurance plan rather than what is most appropriate, forcing many people to have less effective but covered treatments such as surgeries for blocked fallopian tubes or endometriosis rather than pursuing in-vitro fertilization (IVF), a non covered service, even though the cost is about the same and IVF is statistically more likely to result in a
successful pregnancy.
States with mandated insurance coverage for infertility report a decrease in health care costs.
Incidences of high order multiple births is decreased.
Healthier pregnancies and babies are a result.
Currently 15 states have some degree of
employer-mandated infertility coverage as a required benefit within their policies. These states include Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and West Virginia.
Yes, I said Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and West Virginia are ahead of Minnesota in addressing this disease.
This clearly does not align in my mind with the legacy of health policy innovation leadership this state should strive to maintain. I have attached additional facts from RESOLVE about infertility in the US.
We would like to see Minnesota become the 16th state enabling more individuals and couples to pursue their journey to parenthood with less stress, anxiety, and financial hardship due to expanded insurance coverage.
We invite you to join us at one or more of these forums later this month. Listen to legislators share their thoughts, ask questions, share your own infertility story and meet others working through these issues. Coffee and dessert will be served!

my husband and i have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility and are currently seeing an infertility specialist for cycle monitoring. two weeks ago i had a cyst rupture (on the right side) and was told that i had four other cysts on my right ovary. the doc decided that because of the cysts that i shouldn't take clomid this month. but i just got a phone call from one of the nurses telling me that my FSH level was 14.8 and that she couldn't really get into any other explanations because she wasn't authorized to do so. i have had numerous blood tests in the past two years and my FSH level hasn't come back high. last month my FSH was normal. can FSH levels fluctuate from month to month? should i call my doctor right away to discuss this?
Hi there. My fsh has been as high as 23.5 and as low as 3.6 on day three of my cycles. I was told by one doctor who was the only one that really answered the question when I asked him that this means you are getting closer to menopause. They claim your highest measure is your true measure. However there is another test out there called the Inhibin B test which can give you a gage of ovarian reserve. Some insurances do not cover the test, but I felt it was worth taking to find out that my reserve was in the normal range and after charting/getting ultrasounds for a year I know I am still ovulating. It really seems to be a matter of timing and a lot of fertility drugs can actually increase fsh from what I have read/been told. I am currently working with Dr. Check in NJ. www.ccivf.com I have been very impressed with him and even though it took me over a month to get a phone consultation and review of my record it was worth it. He is doing a lot of things all of my other doctors and fertility clinics have not done. He is someone who supports low to no meds for high fsh and has seen success with it.
My wife spoke to her OBGYN yesterday and, rather matter-of-factly, told her she would have difficulty conceiving on her own without fertility treatments. Her Day 3 FSH level was 9.4. He also said her progesterone level was low. We both became very upset. We had read a FSH level below 10 was considered acceptable, but then read that results vary by lab. We have an appointment with a specialist next week but, in the meantime, are losing sleep over his prognosis. Any help?
D3 FSH below 10 is still very much okay, without any other accompanying problems. You didn't mention your wife's agenor how long you have been trying. Also, there is a male factor (35% of cases) to consider. Still, it can not hurt to see a specialist to discuss things and clear up a number of misconceptions.
Infertility is a journey. You may not even need to get on the bus at this point. Meanwhile, just be happy and not lose any sleep yet.
I recently did my first round of fertitlity testing. My ultrasound went well, but my estrogen levels came back very high. This was a day 3 test. They want to perfom the same tests again next month. Is that standard?
The nurse told me that I would probably be told that I need to do IVF. When I asked about donor eggs she told me not to go there yet. Very concerned and not sure what all this means.
What was your fsh on that day? High estrogen for me and a low fsh meant I actually ovulated during my period. I am now starting Estinol to delay ovulation.
just went through 2nd ivf with icsi done about 1wk 1/2 ago. got positive blood test but..
by
Please answer to this concern, I want a second opinion.
About a week and a half ago had the embryo transfer .
I had IVF/ICSI done . from 13 eggs 11 were fertilized and from those fertilized I got two embryos transfer. On Jun 18 had blood work for pregnancy test, it came positive and the level is 139 but I am getting another blood test to see if it has double within the 48hrs. my concern is 139 is very low? I asked the nurse and she said that is not bad but they want to repeat it . when I first got pregnant one of the problems that my doctor knew I had a problem with my first pregnancy was thru hcg level and he find out that I had no embryo in my uterus , is was an ectopic after my 7th wk this was a naturally cocieved , now after two years , I am doing it through ivf/icsi. could this level be ok, is there any other way for me to increase this level, I am very anxious about this whole thing. please help me . thank you
Trying to conceive at 37 for 5 months after miscarriage 3 years ago. Went to RE and 3rd day FSH was 14.1. He said, "looks good," and said to try a few more months, then try IUI. But reading on the Web seems like 14.1 is not good. Why would he say that? Should I be seeking more aggressive treatment?
I kind of think anything above 10 is considered "high" by the medical community, especially if you read pages from infertility clinics. Mine is 12.6 and I am crushed by this number, but I'll take a positive attitude and see the dr. next week to see what can be done about it. In the meantime keep trying to conceive naturally because I've seen lots of encouraging stories of natural pregnancy in ladies with even higher FSH...
Good luck,
Carmen
My highest FSH was 21 but I do recall the doctor telling me that the best range was below 10. This measure however was more important for to those who wanted to go the IVF route because the problem is that stimulation drugs don't work so well if you have a measure higher than 10 and it means that if you go this route then you are likely to produce fewer eggs at retrieval. I did two IVF sessions, the first resulted in 4 eggs retrieved, of which two fertilised. The second only produced two eggs of which only one fertilised. Nonetheless I did get pregnant with the first IVF session (when I was 38yrs old) but unfortunately ended in m/c. Later I was waiting to do a third IVF when I found out I was pregnant naturally - I was then 39yrs old. I now have a wonderful baby boy and am blessed with him.
So in a nutshell I would say that 14.1 is not a bad result in terms of your ability to conceive, for example it proves you have not started menoupause etc, but it is not good for the best ivf chances. On the other hand, age will soon start to play a factor also and so, from my years of trying to concieve and learning all about high fsh and fertility isses, then it is better to go for the ivf sooner rather than later.
I am 41 -my husband and I have been trying to have a baby for the past year. I've been seeing a RE, who tested my day 3 FSH at 15. Gave me the clomid challenge, where I was at 34 on day 10. Based on results, the RE says not a good candidate for IVF. Try IUI. Has anyone had FSH as high as mine and gotten pregnant with IVF? If so, what drugs did they use? How many cycles did it take?
Anyone recommend a HIGH FSH friendly RE in boston area?
Hello fellow Bostonian with high FSH! I am new to this--but I wondered if you had tried acupuncture? I go to the MGH Fertility Center, and they are considering a joint venture with Dr. Zhang of Acuhealing (www.acuhealing.org). He has offices right near MGH and in Needham. I started to cry when I told Dr. Zhang about my FSH level...and he has been a positive beacon of hope for me ever since. I am doing acupuncture and herbs until I begin my IUI cycle. I am a big believer in evidence-based practice...but going to see Dr. Zhang has made me feel so much more positive about my situation. Good luck.
I was being treated by Dr. Zhang too. I live in Milton, MA. I started seeing him after I was diagnosed with high FSH. We have been tcc for 2 years before my dx. We have just completed our first cycle of ovulation induction and IUI. However, I have stopped going for accupunture in March for no good reason except making the time, I guess. Is it still working for you? I am trying to decide if I should continue. We will be starting our second IUI cycle shortly. I still have the herbs. I should start drinking my tea again! We have one child and so it is tricky to get babysitters. Dr. Zhang is a very positive person and he shares his success stories.
Did you ever get a response to your note? I am searching for an RE in Boston who is high FSH friendly. Have seen Toth at MGH and Ginsburg at BWH; neither seemed high FSH friendly, but that may have been because I was without a partner. I am now back with my boyfriend/fiancee, and Ginsburg's associate has offered me medicated IUI only. I have read about centers in other states which are high FSH friendly, but not one in Boston/MA/New England. I'd appreciate any learning you have accumulated on this issue. Many thanks - Betsy
MGH seems like they to get rid of me. I have to take clomid challenge but it was so bizarre--they basically almost told me there was no chance even though I haven't even taken the test yet! Like they were already wanting to get rid of me. My FSH is 12. I probably won't pass the clomid challenge test, right?
I should probably switch to the other acupuncture place--Dr. Zhang. I see someone else. I am not that thrilled with him.
My main issue is insurance. They won't treat you even if you can pay out of pocket?
Harvard Vanguard is very, very nice. But they aren't very aggressive and will hold off on IVF. I'm not even sure if they will give me IVF. They want me to go through months and months of clomid first.
Arg. This is very difficult in Boston. I was going to go to B and W but maybe it is not worth the effort?
I do not just want acupuncture. I want fertility treatment!!!
I've heard that Dr. Oskowitz at Boston IVF is high FSH-friendly, although I haven't seen him yet myself. I am 39 with a very abnormal clomid challenge test (day3= 16.7 and day 10= 44!) I was treated at Reproductive science center in Lexington MA by Dr. Pang, who pretty much acted like I was a number and didn't take my situation into individual consideration at all. He also has AWFUL bedside manner. Unfortunately there is a lot of competition among IVF centers in Boston so they all want to exclude anyone who might bring their success stats down. There is one place where this is different--at MGH they have a reproductive endocrine clinic which does not do IVF (not the Vincent center, in other words)Here is the link: www.massgeneral.org/reproendo/pages/reu_aboutus.htm
The docs there are mostly women and the are not typical REs in that most of them do research on various fertility issues, but will also treat women with high FSH with gonadotropins. Instead of telling me they wouldn't treat me, they gave me a choice about having treatment, without misleading me about the likelihood it will work. And they don't do the "you'll never get pregnant" song and dance. The reason other REs do that is because they want you to buy a donor egg from them. At MGH they figured out I ovulate late and helped me ovulate earlier my last cycle. They also figured out that I have a gene that is likely to be related to my high FSH/ ovarian problem, a gene variant for the Fragile X syndrome. Long story short, it won't help me to get pregnant knowing I have this gene, but if I do get pregnant I will definitely have CVS/amnio to see if the gene expands to the full Fragile X mutation. I am very down on typical REs because I've seen three already (besides these ones at MGH) and not one of them identified my late ovulation or gene issue, probably because they are more interested in finding out if you will make them money by being a successful IVF candidate than in figuring out your particular issue. Sorry for the rant but I am fed up.
I only have 10% of one ovary left as I had 1 removed at 13 secondary to dermoid cysts and surgery to remove two large cysts on Nov. 13th 2006 that left me with 10% of one ovary. My FSH in Sept with the cysts was 7.7, now this past Sat. on day 3 of my cycle it was 27. Doctor is continuing birth control as it may lower it a bit and retesting on day 3 of my next cycle, aslo doing the inhibin B test. He also siad start looking into donor. Difficult to hear. I have one son who is 3. Had an ectopic following and that is how I started with IVF..... Any helpful ideas would be great.
Hi Everyone,
I am so happy to have found this forum!
Here is my situation. I conceived two boys when I was 28 and 31 in the first month of trying, and I've never had a miscarriage. I am 36 1/2 now and I live in Manhattan.
I'm now divorced from the boys' father after many years of suffering and seriously involved with a wonderful man. We want to have a child together, but not quite yet since we've only been together 9 months, the kids are just getting used to him, and we don't yet live together- we can't until June 2007 because I have a nesting custody arrangment until then (my ex and I move in and out of one apartment and the kids stay put).
I did a fertility workup a few months ago because my cycles were shortening and I wanted to get a sense of where I stood fertility-wise. The results reallly scared me. My FSH was 10.7 and 10.9 in two subsequent months (this according to Quest labs); my E2 was 92 and 80. Trans-vaginal ultrasounds showed no problems and I am regularly ovulating. My ob/re is urging me to start TTC immediately- he says time may be running out. But for my two children, it would be much better to wait a little.
I truly want your honest opinions, advice, and insights. I want to give my dear boyfriend the baby he so desires, I want to have a 3rd child and especially with him, and I want my boys to be happy. I have to balance all of these competing needs/desires and I'm so frightened that on the one hand if I go ahead now a pregnancy/new baby will overload my kids and be difficult for me since I'm not yet living with boyfriend and on the other that if I wait, time will run out.
Hi there --- Just turned 40 and got the news that my FSH is 17.2 and my E2 is 34. I had an early miscarriage about 10 months ago, so the news that I might not be successful naturally or with IVF, came as a big shock. With my FSH levels, my insurance company won't pay for IVF, so I need to get the levels down because we can't afford to do any of the treatments without insurance.
I'm looking for some suggestions for a great acupuncturist and a good RE doctor in the Boston area.
I'd also like to meet some other women who live near me who are going through the same thing - (High FSH and my age).
I'm sorry to hear about your situation and think I have a pretty good sense of what you might be feeling. I'm a little younger (just turned 38), but had a miscarriage 1 yr. ago with my first pregnancy and after struggling unsuccesfully to get pregnant again, finally went to an RE and to my shock, learned about my borderline/high FSH. This news particularly took me aback because my OB/GYN had assured me that all my fertilty tests had turned out "normal"; my RE feels that they're anything but normal and that my situation requires aggressive action.
I live in the Boston area too (Somerville) and would be happy to connect with you to tell you about the steps I'm taking (accupuncture, herbs, 2nd opinion, etc.) and what I've learned from my number of friends who had difficulty conceiving, if you would find it helpful; please feel free to e-mail me if that's the case. I know my circumstances are a little different, so if you prefer to find someone in a situation exactly like yours, I completely understand.
I am not going to tell anyone here that I am going to get pregnant because who knows and it is a long shot, but I just wanted to share where I am at with my crazy FSH. I was told I am in menopause - and it sure seems to be. Non-stop hot flashes at age 39, vaginal dryness, no libido, bad sleep etc etc. Got my FSH tested as soon as I weaned my 20 month year old and it was 100. Two weeks later got to an RE and it was at 111 and my estradiol was around 30 or something. He told me I was in menopause, ovarian failure and really no chance of ovulating again. He is, however, a sweetheart doctor and willing to try things. We followed Check's protocol - .2 mg ethinyl estradiol (sp??) and ALSO I decided to do 75 mg of DHEA a day as well - as a NYC clinic is having success with it and aging ovaries. I have been doing this less than a month. My uterine lining was building up and so he put me on progesterone for 10 days to induce AF. Then a few days of NOTHING to get it going. Went in a few days ago after two days of no meds and had a FOLLICLE at 14 mm, estradiol in the 300s and FSH at 7 or less. The Doctor just about fainted. Once again, I am not saying that this is going to turn into a baby, but I am saying that the drugs can do wonders. Sometimes the FSH needs to get lowered and those poor follicles need a break. They are freaking out from being bombarded.
So forr all of you who haven't tried Check's protocol - give it a shot. And I truly think the DHEA played a major role.
I read your story and i am so intrigued. I am am in the same situation with high fsh or should I say now in menopause.I got a DC in Aug. of 2006 because i would not stop bleeding or brown spotting.Had two more periods afterand no more since dec or jan. i went to see a re and said thaat i need to do ivf with donor eggs.I would like to know more about your situation and if you became pregnant. Thanks tele 908-251-5671
Just started working with Dr. Check and am very impressed so far. He is starting me on the estinol or estadiol this coming month because I have a high fsh and just ovulated on day 5 of my cycle. My follicles were 22 by day 3 on my period! I am feeling very good about what he has had to say and am looking forward to seeing what he can do with my situation. I have had nine years of infertility and the things he is having me do no other doctor even looked at. I was turned away by numerous clinics and the one that took me put me on a lot of meds and did not even time my one IUI correctly! Let me know how it goes if you don't mind.
Hi, I'm new to this - first time writing.
I am 33 with highst day 2 FSH at 19 and a 2.5 year old daughter - whose just wonderful. We have had 2 failed IVF's - 1 ectopic, 2nd ended with 3 great day 5 embryos but neg preg test. Desparate for another child and wondering if we must bash on with my eggs or go donor? Really scared though that if we go donor and conceive that my feelings towards my next child will be different. Any advice would be great. Many thanks
My story is....high FSH (last time tested was over a year ago and it was 14). Did IVF through DE four times and resulted in miscarriages. The IVF worked 2 of the times but never "took". Prior to last IVF found out I had clotting issues and put on Lovonox(sp?) once a day. But IVF didn't work. I am two weeks late, took a pg test twice and negative. Does anyone know if the "drugs" from last cycle are affecting things? Or is this something I should start to expect with a high FSH. Any advice would be great.
Hi all! Yesterday I got my results back from the doctor and I have high FSH of 69. I just turn 40. When the doctor told me that my chance to conceive are very minimal I lost the ground beneath my feet, because, you see I do't have another child. The doctor like all the other doctors I read from your posts suggested to go with an egg doner. But I really want my own child otherwise why go through the whole trouble if having a donor egg is the same like adapting, at least to me.
Anyways, after I stoped crying my eyes out I start searching the internet and I found this forum. I read a lot about diets or herbs that can lower your FSH is anyone out there who has a web site that talks about diets or suplements that can help?
And one last thing, if you already have a child consider yourself lucky that at least know how it feels to be maternal. Believe me it is better than knowing that you may never experience the feelings of motherhood... Off course don't loose hope. It is hard staff that we have to deal with...
Hi - I was just told thst I have a FSH level of 10.5 and that I need to go immediately for IVF and even then have only 10 per cent chance- does this sound consistent with anything that others have heard?
Thanks!
Hi, I was told the same thing with my FSH of 19 - that we needed to start IVF immediately but would only do it when the FSH was below 12 - apparently one responds better to the medication when the FSH<12. FSH levels also seem to fluctuate - mine have been 19, 9 (did IVF - got ectopic), 17, 13 (did IVF - got neg preg test), 19. Now waiting to see what happens next month to hopefully try again. Not sure if this helps?
I've just turned 38. My husband is out of town and my doctor called to say my fsh is 19 with an estradiol of 52.
The office said I would need donor eggs to conceive. The doctor can't see me for weeks. I need to talk to someone...
Hi
31 year of age.
TTC 2.8 years.
3 IUI's and 1 IVF, all failed.
Endometriosis and FSH of 12.
Well I just started my period yesterday and in preparation for my final IVF, am using the Evra patch to help stimulate my ovaries when on treatment at the end of the month.
Feeling a bit anxious as I do not think I can take another neg response.
Also taking a vitamin called staminogro which is supposed to help make the eggs a little more healthy.
And omega 3 and 6.
Did anyone use the pill/patch before and did it help?
Hi, I'm new to this site. I've just been told my FSH level is 9.7..Im not able to see my doctor until next week. I understand this isn't too high but does it still come within the 'normal' range. I'm 35 and naievly thought my level would be lower!
Thanks for any answers...I live in London by the way..
I have three healthy teenage sons. I remarried in 2004 and we conceived right away. Our son, Jordan, was born in March of 2005 but was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 and died 32 hours later. Three months later I was pregnant again, our son Joshua died of Down's Syndrome in the second trimester. I conceived again just three months later, and then had an early m/c at five weeks. That was November of 2005. After that we kept trying every month, and didn't conceive for eight months, and that time had a m/c at five weeks. Then went back to ttc for four months. We have had three cycles with Clomid. And I take Prometrium during the second half of the cycle. My doctor ordered the Clomid challenge test this month and my 3 day FSH was good, but my ten day was 25.8!
The day after my ten day blood draw I had a horrible UTI, could an infection change the results of the test?
Are there things I can be doing to fix this? My doc is going to consult with an RE over the phone (the nearest RE is five hours away). I am so discouraged. After our four losses, I never thought this was going to happen, that even conception will be hard.
I used to post on this board a few years ago, but have since given up on my infertility journey. I've decided to go adoption. However, that is not the reason I am writing today. I am writing because I know a few years ago there was a pharmacy in Italy that some ladies (including myself) used for the meds.
I am trying to find the website for that pharmacy. If anyone has that information I would be very appreciative to receive it.
I am looking for their information for my mother who was recently diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. The one drug she has to take is costing her $250/month and she does not have any insurance. I'm hoping to be able to find it cheaper in Italy.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Intense story here.
by
This is a heart wrenching story
I had a child after being diagnosed with Pcos with the assistance of Glucophate 500mg BID. 2 years later I was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst in which it required my right ovary to be removed. 2 months ago after a CT of the pelvis, I was diagnosed with a second teratoma or possible dermoid and the doctor did a laparatomy to remove the tumor. In doing so he had to remove 2/3 of my only remaining ovary. I went back for my pathology report and it was shown that the tissue removed was NORMAL CORPUS LUTEUM!!! Meaning I was about to ovulate!!!! HE REMOVED IT UNNECESSARILY!!!!!!!!!! He told me that the ovary is a very forgiving organ and that I could still conceive if I do it in a timely manner! Well the following month I had a normal period and then the next month I was 2 weeks late but I DID end up having a period. To my knowledge from being in the medical field, it means that I have ovarian function still. Well, yesterday was day 3 of my cycle and I had my family physician call in a LH, FSH, and Estradiol to see if things were normal...Here are my results on day 3......
Estradiol 35
FSH 16.0
LH 7.1
Could these tests be valid since I just had ovarian surgery. I really need some advice here, girls. I am 29 years old and I am dying inside. I feel as if I was raped of my rights to have children again.
Please don't sugar coat the situation if you will, I need real honest advice on these levels.
My doctor gave me 50mg of Clomid for days 5-9 to see if the CCT would further diagnose the situation. I start this tomorrow..
Thanks for your help. I am so glad I have this site to turn to. I need a friend desperately.

You need to find out what the scale for within normal range for your FSH level is first. Every lab is slightly different. Some labs it is anything over 10 is too high while others it maybe 16 or 18, etc. Or perhaps your FSH is elevated since you only have one ovary.
The other numbers seem good.
I know just how you feel. I went thru all the same feelings. Don't let anyone tell you how to react to what your going through. It takes time.
Hi All-
New to this board. I'm 39 and ttc #1. I found out earlier this month (first comid cycle - 50 mg), that my CD3 FSH is 12.1. I was of course, surprised and very disappointed to hear that news. I was already taking the clomid, and so RE said to continue with that this cycle (and then we'll move immediately to more aggressive options).
Results of CD13 u/s: R ovary did not respond to the clomid, but the L ovary had very good response (22, 21, 19, 17, 14 and couple smaller follies). We triggered and did IUI.
My question is, what does it mean to respond to clomid like that if FSH is elevated? Is there any merit to the thought that something could be wrong with R ovary and not the L? And would that have affected my FSH reading?
Thanks all,
Dawn

Has anyone ever used ovulex to correct their cycle? I am 41, had high fsh, low estrogen/progesterone and have started it and finally started my cycle after 9 months. All docs told me that really the only option I had was donor eggs. Didn't want to give up yet....have a son less than 2 and a wonderful pregnancy. Was devastated and did research on this and started it. Any other thoughts on this product -- good or bad -- would be most appreciated.
I have been trying for about 8 years. My son will be 9 in October.
I have been through IVF twice. I also have high FSH said I was in premature menopause. I am 39. I started adoption for China and thought I would try ovulex too. I have only been on it for about 2 weeks. It has great success stories.
GOod luck. The website is very inspirational.
