Well had a couple great days kiting at lake Mac. The downside was the couple bad days were on the weekend of the kite camp. Thats the way the cookie crumbles when waiting for the wind. It wasn't that bad had a pretty good session on sunday evening blowing 10-15 from the southeast. Friday was really good blew 15-20 from the northeast from about 2 pm till dusk. Monday was good blew 10-20 from the south-south east. Tuesday was good blew 10-20 from the s-southeast. Wednesday was the best with a 15-25 for about three hours in the afternoon from the west. Waited Thursday for the forecasted winds of 10-20 from the west but it never happened. Good times!

Getting to Lake Mac & best place to kite board

Hi Bill

I live in Vail, Colorado. I am a new kitesurfer. I've had lessons and I'm almost getting up on the board. I think I would have made it had the wind conditions been kinder down in Mexico. Also, I own all my own, very modern, equipment.

I want to go to Lake Mac. Can you please tell me how I might get there from Vail or Denver? Also, what is the best part of the lake to go to where I met get side wind conditions so I can learn to get up on the board.

Also, are there campgrounds or reasonable places/hotels I could use? I know that Ogallala is fairly closeby. Any other useful information you can give, I would be most grateful. Thanks for any anticipated help. Take care.

Best regards

Can anyone tell me the best place at Lake Mac, NB for kite surfing i.e. where I'm most likely to get a side/onshore wind? Looking at the map possibly it may be on the north side. Let me know someone please.

Best regards

Hey Chalky,

Yes the best side normally is the north side. Read where we do our kite camps and that would be the place. On a north wind you can go to the other side. Do not access the boat ramp area near the dam as there is no good launch sites. Go further around the lake and take the third dirt road to Ogallala beach road right and that dead ends into an access road. Camping and lodging are there at the dam and at north shore lodge.

Good Luck
Bill
