Scottish naming patterns

Cruising around the net today as opposed to shooting fireworks and discovered this web page of interesting info re historical naming patterns, highland and lowland among others. As to lowland, historically it noted that in days past it was not uncommon to see the surname of a family spelled multiple ways. Certainly complicates genealogy. In our case, will never know for sure if we were originally Magee or McGee as has been recorded for at least the past 177 years, (Magee in some earlier census rolls). Reading through some of these entries, am inclined to believe that, while we were almost certainly lowlanders, may have had a highlander in the woodpile at some distant point. Earl
