      So much jazz, so little weekend ...

      Mike Jones Trio, 9 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Green Mill Jazz Club, 4802 N. Broadway; $12; 773-878-5552. He doesn't pretend to be quite as cerebral as the aforementioned Brad Mehldau, but when it comes to mainstream, straight-ahead repertoire, Jones has few peers. Think of wizard pianists such as Dick Hyman and the late Dave McKenna -- who always applied fleet virtuosity to a colossal repertoire -- and you have a rough idea of Jones' approach. Because Jones is based in Las Vegas, where he plays for Penn & Teller's show at the Rio, Chicagoans don't get to hear him often enough. This time, Jones will be joined by bassist Kelly Sill and drummer Eric Montzka Both are fine musicians, but Jones can keep a room happy with just two hands and 88 keys.

      If you choose not to decide
      You still have made a choice
      You can choose from phantom fears
      And kindness that can kill;
      I will choose a path that's clear-
      I will choose free will
