I'm happy to see that I am not the only one. About two years ago I spent a little over 40 minutes telling a small audience of drunks my version of the joke at a party. I (sober as always) kept ad-libbing and adding to my already lengthy telling, riffing on whatever seemed to work at the time. One of the said drunks was turning purple and gasping throughout the whole thing. I wish I had recorded it, because that is the best version I ever told, the best joke I ever told. It is actually one of my proudest moments as a performer.
