For those who dare tread onto the wild and woolly side, many of these upcoming events may be of interest.
On the subject of crop circles, I have a recollection that's germane. The featured speaker at the Central Library's "Real-Life X-Files" event on 21 June 2002 was Linda Moulton Howe, mentioned below. She showed a video on these and tied them in with "mystery lights," which she'd supposedly also captured on tape. Among her numerous lapses of logic, perhaps the most striking was when she noted, about the "lights" which appeared near crop circles on the tape she was showing, that "they seem to grow smaller as they approach the camera." She presented this as if it were just one additional dimension deepening the mystery. I hadn't noticed it until she pointed it out, for a simple reason: I was viewing them as artifacts of the camera, and consequently saw them as they actually were -- unchanging in size; whereas, since she was viewing them as real objects in the environment, she interpreted their fixed angular size as they "approached" (i.e., moved to parts of the field where the background was closer) as an actual diminution. It never occurred to her that rather than being an additional "mystery," this argued strongly that they weren't objects "out there" at all, but a camera malfunction.
A few weeks later, while in Palestine, I was reading George Hansen's book [i]The Trickster and the Paranormal[/i], and noticed that he mentioned her in a quite respectful and uncritical way. The fact that he hadn't noticed her amazing credulity, as illustrated above, only made me less inclined to to be impressed with his credentials as a formerly practicing parapsychologist; rather, the fact that a lab in that field had employed him for eight years only suggested that their standarda couldn't be that high either.

Germ kicks off our extremely busy Fall schedule with a Very Special Crop Circles Lecture and Powerpoint Presentation on Thursday, September 27, at 7PM with Jennifer Stein of the Mutual UFO Network.
Jennifer is the coordinator for Main Line MUFON, "The Bleep Group," and Noetic Sciences of the Main Line. She is also the South Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Area State Representative for MUFON.
In her research of crop circles on location with Nancy Talbut, Linda Howe, Chet Snow, Bert Janson and Rubin Urdiarte, she has made several trips to England and Canada and is a member of the ICCRA (International Crop Circle Research Association, under the direction of Jeffrey Wilson).
Her presentation at GERM will focus on current theories offered by the research experts as possible explanations for unusual biological evidence in the material studied, and also explain why the real story of the crop circles remains a mystery.
