Mardi Gras Field Lacrosse Tournament

by (Login dawgbone98)

For those interested, we have a team going down to the Mardi Gras Lacrosse tournament this February (the tournament is the 5th-7th and we are going for the 5th-8th). We still have a couple of spots to fill namely a couple of longpoles, a couple of midi's and some righties on attack (we have 2 goalies already so we are good there). If you are interested in playing, please contact me for details and costs.

You can find more information here:http://www.nolacrosse.com/tourney.htm

So far the team is comprised of guys who play for various teams in the OSMFLL. There is also limited room for those who wish to attend but not play (basically you just don't pay the tournament fee).

You can contact me at derek@redtag.ca

Do we have to reinvent the Wheel ????????

by Ray Mcwhirter (Login majorn84)

Along about this time every year just before the first Semi Annual meeting guys start to post their ideas on making the game better, which is good for our game but it always seems to me that people think improving our game means adding rules to the already existing ones we have. This is in my opinion does nothing more than slow the game down, more for the referees to watch for and more for our guys to think about what they can and cant do while they play.

I have a novel concept why dont we abolish one rule that is currently on the books, which is to scrap the passing of two guys rule and just make it a straight five second posession rule. This in my opinion will open the game up really wide offensively, especially in fast break and transition situations. Thusly as we move along the concept of collapsing on defence and playing a zone becomes a thing of the past because if you can pass by three guys to shoot a tight zone now becomes a hinderance to playing defence. Then you wont have to worry about calling a zone defence because no one will be utilizing it.

Lets now move onto the refs, lets face it those guys have it tough they have to watch so much in a game that what happens is they start to miss things because they have to watch out for so much. If we abolish this rule then all they have to watch for is three things basically, penalties , outside shots, and the five second rule. Im sure if we took a little bit off the plates of the referess it will make it a more enjoyable game for them to ref. Because zone defence and did he or did he not pass two guys are the most hotly contested issues besides contact in our game.

This one litte tweak in my opinion would make the game better to watch more fun to play and easier to ref,Im sure this will spark a huge amount of controvery but if you think about it im sure you will see the sense it makes

by Dances with stix (Login hitfrombehind)

Great Idea!!

Also to add to that Ray how about we don't start counting 5 second possesion until you hit the center line. We have found in tournaments in the US this forces defenders to start forechecking right away and spreads the rest of the team out opening up the floor.

not if you protect your stick...

by Derek Blasutti (Login dawgbone98)

If you can't be cross checked and can't be slashed anywhere but your stick (I'm assuming an accidental whack on the arm is not allowed), I can't see it being all that difficult to protect your stick, even with 2 or 3 guys coming after you.

but there's the Masters AGM on Friday.

And again, if only stick contact is allowed and contact with anything else is illegal, it's not that hard to rag the ball for 30 seconds in your own end.

reinventing the wheel

by (Login kenlax)

Nice suggestion. I hear what you are saying about keeping it simple. But I recall that last year when there was discussion about adding/changing rules, we were assured that the referrees would just enforce the existing ones better and that would likely help things. As you know, this didn't happen ( ie. stick chequing remains a mystery to me and is called differently from ref to ref, outside shot with clear shooting lane remains very inconsistent at best, and zone defence stillleaves me scratching my head as to when its called vs a warning etc) So while I totally hear you about keeping it simple, I think we need to make some changes. Just an opinion.

Re: reinventing the wheel

by Dances with stix (Login hitfrombehind)

I recently played in a stick checking tournament in the states.
you get 5 secs with the ball. as long as you want to get it over half before your 5 starts.... you could play zone or man on man you could shoot from outside the dotted line if you had a clear lane... you will be amazed at the few penalties in the games..

I think that every one should take in a stick checking ( stick on stick ) game with these native rules.. There is way more respect for the guys on the floor and also the refs.

The Rez Dogs are trying to put on a senior masters tournament with stick checking in Feb.

Please contact me if you are interested in signing up your team.
It will be minimal price to play we just want to only cover the floor costs. and it will be played at the Iroquios Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations

re:Do we have to reinvent the wheel?

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

Ray , I totally agree with your concept of minimizing the number of issues the refs have to call (and hopefully make it easier on them)but I'm not 100% sold on the elimination of the passing two players rule.I feel u will get a higher concentration of players collasping below the dots in hopes to minimize a players room around the crease.I like the idea of it(passing two runners) only counting in the offensive zone with hopes of creating more fast breaks.I still feel that the elimination of the dots and shots from anywhere would be both easier for the refs and spread the defense out more due to the snipers some teams possess.Good luck at the agm fellas and hopefully whatever is decided makes for a better game.........cheers Riler........

Proposal

by (Login dawgbone98)

Change the interpretation of zone.

Right now, you can collapse into the dots provided you go to the ball carrier. So technically as soon as the ball carrier enters the dots, you can send 5 guys in, provided they all go towards the ball.

Make it a true man on man... If 1 offensive player enters the dots, only 1 defensive player can be in there. At the same time, extend the 2 man rule to include going sideways (this prevents it from turning the game into a dump it low, clear out and go 1 on 1). Basically, I can double team outside the dots but not inside.

This would actually be easier to call I think, because it gets rid of the grey area when teams try to collapse. As soon as you see defenders out numbering the offensive players, it's a zone call. First one in each period is a warning (reset shot clock) each one after is a penalty. Heck, even make it so that the offensive team can finish their offensive possession before it's called (a signal like a stall warning in field).

Also, change the allowing of zone to shorthanded only. Right now it allows it for when the other team pulls their goaltender, get rid of that.

What Masters rule modifications and/or suggestions have been sumitted?

Just curious as the submission deadline looms in the not to distant future (Oct 23), what suggestions and/or modifications have been submitted to the Masters OLA secretary? Understanding what has been submitted will not only allow the team reps to prepare by discussing the suggestions with their respective teams but will ensure that we compile a comprehensive list.

stick check rules

by (Login ballstopper)

i played in Sarnia a few years back with stick checking.the rule that i remember is

1.if your stick is in front of your face/head or contact to the shaft
AT THE REFS DISCRETION its stick check call

2 if its away from your face/head its fair game but its a head to head contact not the shaft

as a goalie/runner i am all for it

just remember let the refs call it we just need to be very clear with the refs as to what to call and not to call

we only had 2 or 3 bad contacts in a 12 week season with 3 games a night

Hey Dances with Stix. I have heard you on here ever since the Nationals complain and call certain people out about how you don't like the rules as they are currently called and you continue to have a "dig" at the Commissioner for whatever reason. Let's just get a couple of things straight. Your team single handedly almost ruined the Nationals because of the "bush league" way you played. You were perfectly aware of the rules and yet you chose to ignore them and turned all your games into a "gong show". The rules in Masters are not set by Trevor. They are agreed upon by all teams at the AGM meetings twice a year. If you want to play contact and run around mouthing at people the whole game, then set up your own league or better yet, why don;t you propose something at the AGM? Just getting a little tired of hearing you "chirp" everyone when you should probably concentrate on following the rules as agreed upon by all of us.... rant over

Lacrosse Product Testers Required

by (Login SportSafety)

I am part of a not-for-profit working group linked to Loughborough University in the UK, focussed on demonstrating the benefit of directing R&D funding to driving true innovation in safety and performance to equipment manufacturers.

We have developed a brief questionnaire that we would like to be completed by players actively involved in Lacrosse. In turn, we will do everything we can to respond with encouraging a resurgence of lacrosse product development. Our case would be strongest supported by information from as broad a cross section of the active lacrosse population as possible.

Please click on this link or copy it into your address bar.
http://Lacrosse.questionpro.com

We are also recruiting for volunteers to test new equipment. You will have brand new custom equipment made for you at the cutting edge of sports design. All we need is for you to commit to giving us productive feedback on our products before they are released to the market. We are currently a little short of Canadian participants, and so are weighting towards Canadian at the moment, making it an ideal tme to get involved.

This type of study has been performed very successfully in the past, as a catalyst for enormous development of American Football helmets over the last 6 years, including over 25% greater impact protection and real-time diagnostic player health information transmitted directly to coaches on the sideline. We are looking to encourage manufacturers to achieve and market real advances in player safety, with the belief that introducing such products will make sport more enjoyable, accessible and help people enjoy our sport for longer.

Kind regards,
Simon Patterson

Rooster took me under his (chicken) wing when I played up in Owen Sound. He gave me jobs, both at the beer store where he was the manager and the best boss ever and doing various handyman jobs - although he always put me on ceiling insulation in 30 degree weather which I didn't like. He let me stay at his place for awhile rent free and always opened up his home to the out of town lacrosse guys for food, beverages and a place to crash. He was one of the most generous guys I ever knew, literally would give you the shirt off his back even if he was down and out. He was a great teammate, boss and friend and the other McMillan family will miss him greatly!! Goodbye #17 - may they give you 4 x 5 nets in lacrosse heaven!

Rooster - R.I.P.

We have lost one of the true characters of our game. This summer, Rooster played for us in Huntsville because we only had four players. After the game he came up to the car in the parking lot to receive what he said was his "pay" ..... my wife Carol turned to get him a beer to which he said "It's a kiss I want" .... he gave her a big wet kiss on the cheek and then we shared a beer as well. Rooster was one of those guys you never forget....he played hard....partied hard and embodied what Masters lacrosse is all about....having a little fun.You couldn't help but like him. We will all miss him.

How Real Masters is Played

by laxxstix (Login laxxstix)

Too bad Trevor didn't take up Six Nay on there invitation to see how real Masters lacrosse is played. He should have attended last week's tournament in Newtown (Cattaragus) where stick check and shooting from anywhere (penalty if you hit someone) is allowed. They have another on weekend of Oct.8. Amazing how there is so much less cheapshots and penalties vs the OLA's version. They have carpet in and used the bigger Sr A nets. As a goalie I was not thrilled with that decision, but they usually use the 4'x4's.

The Arena was very good, Beer Garden was nice and spacious and the complex was climate controlled which is a nice change to most arenas we play in. However, I am more than a little confused, disillusioned with a couple of things and want to know others thoughts on some issues.

1. the extra fee for calling this a Nationals should be refunded immediately or at the very least by the time the AGM in March rolls around. This was by no means a true Nationals Championship

2.The structure of only having 2 Pools by which we could very nearly have had 5 teams with 3-0 records lacked thought and planning. The original schedule by which there were 4 pools would have resulted in a true pool winner who would then go on to play the other pool winners.etc.
There has to be a system whereby mid level teams have a reasonable opportunity to play in a semi finals etc. I like the idea of having a quarter finals on Saturday night as was the format for the Juniors. This creates added excitement while giving the top couple of teams a buy right into the semis etc.

3. We need to sit down as a group and re work some of the rules. We attempted to change some last year and instead, agreed that we would put it off for another year. Also, we expressed to the referees that we don't need more rules as much as we need the existing ones enforced better....this has not happened.

Thoughts.
Thanks Brampton for a good show

????????????

by (Login 5deadeye5)

We tried our best in a year that brought on a recession. A national tournament brings on additional costs and we spent more money just by hosting in Brampton and trying to please everyone with great facilities. Final numbers are in and if we were to refund the additional $200.00 to each team we would certainly lose money, if you think that is fair then run it next year. You know that both Brampton teams will enter and you also know that the Brampton Senior Masters will spend more money in the booster club then any other team . Do to all the comments such as this one the Brampton Masters have decided not to run a tournament next year and maybe Bobs your uncle or another genius can.

Possible rule changes which need some discussion

by (Login Zacher)

Greetings,

I have three areas which require your input/thoughts/feelings on modifications to the OLA Masters rules. We intend to apply these in our house league next summer as a test case to see the results.

In no order of importance then are:

1. Remove the 24' line for all shots on net. If a player hits anyone with their stick, body or ball during the shot a double minor will be accessed. If it is deem as intentional or careless then a 5 minute major will be accessed.

2. Teams can play short-handed by two men when serving penalties. This would open up the floor during PP making shots on net safer. There will be no penalty shot given if a team already has two men in the box and receives a third penalty.

3. In conjunction with penalties, they will be served in the order assessed and will not start until a previous one expires or is released because of a goal. This means if a team has two players in the box and is assessed another penalty. The third penalty will not start until the first one released. A team can only be short handed by a maximum of two players.

Although I don't know the previous rationale for only allowing teams to be short handed by one man, following the suggestions not only falls within the current the rules and policies of the OLA but also ensures that the player's behaviour is addressed in a fair manner.

I would be quite interested in your ideas!

Cheers,

Jim

rule ideas

by Peace (Login PeaceLax)

How about following the draw rules in place in box from Tyke to Junior and for all levels of field... i.e.: if the ball gets lodged in a drawmans stick he loses possession. Currently, too many specialized drawmen in Masters just blatently cheating, trapping with illegally pinched sticks because Masters rules don't allow for stick calls. Then when the ball gets stuck, ref blows whistle, allows guy to take it out with his fingers and keep it! this rule is currently not allowed ANYWHERE, but Masters and is counter to the spirit of fair play.

In the 4 games we played on Nationals weekend, our opponents "won" 6 draws this way, if you're not gonna check sticks, which i agree is burdensome, then take the ball from the guy cheating. I am a big fan of minimal rules, but the free-for-all that has become the draw in Masters is really the only thing a dislike.

cheers

I totally agree with what you are saying + the rule states that you cannot "pin" the ball in the faceoff circle but I don't think I have ever seen it called.

I also agree that if the ball is lodged in the stick during a faceoff, the possession should be turned over to the non-offending team. Allowing the ball to be lodged in your stick should not give you possession.

some thoughts on face offs

by jake (Login eqjake)

First let me preface this by stating that i take the majority of draws for my masters team and yes the ball does get lodged in my stick from time to time. but this is by no means the intent on any draw i take. And i would argue it is not the intent of any other drawman , believe me no one ever taught this as a go to move on a draw, we all learned the same basic approach be it field or box draws
And no my stick is not pinched at all, but another player leaning on the head does tend to alter the sidewalls.

but i understand the reasoning for the current call , if i am in a position on a draw to have the ball lodged in the stick , i have controlled the draw , afterall the ball is in my stick , a key point to remember in a league where you can't battle for a loosie.

Its a catch 22 here ,theres nothing wrong with battling for a ball on a draw and a by-product of this is the ball lodging in the stick, i would argue the following occurs to lodge the ball in a stick , the drawman executed the clamp faster than his opponent and gained full possession of the ball.
Perhaps the answer here is for the other drawman to prevent the clamp in the first place ?

the fact is most times the ball becomes trapped in my stick when the opposing face off man clamps down, not on the ball but on the side wall of my stick, collapsing the head and clamping the ball, it is not until i attempt to rake the ball out that i even know its lodged in the head,

I would offer the following suggestions for other drawman, if the face off man is trapping the ball , he is obvoiusly clamping on the draw, develop a counter for this move , far too many guys rely only on one face off move or resort to cheating, going early, grabbing the stick etc.

a quick fix if you are getting the ball getting lodged in the head is to string the sidewalls on the outside of the head , on a stock head it is often the sidewall strings that lock in the ball

pinched heads do make a small difference but technique and a game plan will beat any modified equipment

Re possible rule changes which need some discussion

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

Jim ...U make some very insightful thoughts that I think all the members should seriously consider.1)I really like the idea of shooting from outside(keeps the goalies honest...cannot believe I said that???) and the removal of the dotted line. But I still feel that the bigger issue is the collapsing of the defense inside this line....please see the posted link (apologies to those in photo but it illustrates my point precisely) 2)If players are to receive two penalties for a dangerous shot then you MAY get more players tossed out per game especially with the 3 penalties and out rule...(gonna need bigger rosters)3)Two men short is cool cause it opens up floor space but I think the third penalty should still be a penalty shot.....(again roster size....often teams show up with 7 guys on friday nights)........As for the other posts in response to Jim.... inconsistent officiating is in my opinion the Biggest problem with masters......we can change the rules all we want but if officials r not calling the game the way its mandated then it all means shat.....There is nothing worse than 2 refs not calling the same game at both ends. sorry if this sounds like sour grapes but we have all been there at one time or another.....Thx Jim for creating the discussion.....I feel better already...lol..ie/ count the d inside the dots....http://canadamasterslacrosse.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=15

Re: Re possible rule changes which need some discussion

by (Login CagedAnimal)

Okay Jim, I hear what you and Riler are trying to do and I love that we are all trying to figure a way of making this a more enjoyable game.

I personally would not like to see the 24' line removed because of what it stands for on the floor. It gives players a visual cue to let you know where you can shoot from. It is also important because I still believe that letting people shoot from anywhere asks makes the game more dangerous and the arc gives a level of control. Yes the increased penalty does increase the level of awareness needed by the shooter but I think it will result in more injuries. We might end up with more DOVE MVP shots, let's hope not. I don't think that part of the game is broken, don't fix it.

My issue, as was mentioned by Riler, is the zone defense. You know me, I think I am the ref in any league that calls that the most because if teams are playing a zone, it takes away lanes to shoot in, it adds extra men to beat so it is likely that a 2nd man would prevent a good scoring opportunity. This needs to be cleared up with the refs and explained and defined clearly so that they know how to call it.

Lastly, the most important thing that needs to leave the game is the contact. We talked about trying to establish a way of limiting what the defender can do by allowing a particular stance or something. Defenders should be required to keep both hands on their stick and THEIR HANDS MUST BE TOGETHER!!! Way toooooo many cross-checks are happpening that don't make a noise so refs don't call it. That doesn't mean they don't hurt like hell. The defender can resist the contact but can't extend their arms to initiate contact. Also, the charge needs to be called way more. It isn't called unless it is blatent.

I think getting the refs straight and all on the same page would be a great help too. That is why I am unsure as to why you would change the rules in your league, that would seem to be a detrament because your players would get used to playing a certain way but would not be called that way in the tournys.

My 2 cents.

Re: Re possible rule changes which need some discussion

by CagedAnimal (Login CagedAnimal)

Sorry have to disagree. How can allowing guys to shoot from anywhere cut down on contact? Having that line in there makes guys visually aware of where they need to be. Shooting from anywhere will result in guys taking longer shots, thus shooting harder, thus shooting more wildly. This will result in people getting hit and injuries.
Sorry, I just think the game is fine ultimately the way it is, the focus needs to be on how it is called.
PLEASE REMEMBER I AM ALSO A REFEREE (no matter what the "excutive" thinks) AND I AM SAYING THAT THE GAME IS NOT BEING CALLED THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED.

I want to smack refs when I hear them say, "If you want me to call everything, I will fill the penalty box every shift." That is such a cop-out to say they don't want to do what they are supposed to do. I would rather them fill the box so that guys will realize how they are supposed to play.

No major rule changes please. Keep it the same. Enforce.

Gordie ...please read the following post from the Calgary tender on their version of the game..http://www.network54.com/Forum/107377/message/1251161947/Thanks%2C+From+Calgary.........I would argue the opposite that more players are getting hit because you can shoot from anywhere inside the dots...guys tend to force their way in (creating more contact especially with all the zone d that has been way too common in the jr game)and fire the ball without a clear path...ie over guys ,around them and through legs...allowing outside shots with a clear lane ie/ no one directly positioned between them and the goal would force the d out of the zone and make more lanes for the shooter.....i also like the idea of beating two guys only counting in the offensive zone.....nothing worse than a guy picking off a pass in his own end, beating a player in his own end and having to pull off a shot from far out cause the 5 seconds expired...

HAHA I knew it was gonna be my Brampton boys in that pic.

by (Login laxkid)

Before I even clicked the link I knew it! lol It certainly illustrates your point though.

One rule I would like to see changed is the offensive team regaining possession on a ball the goalie made a save on. The defensive team is being penalized for their goalie making a save and the reverse happens on shots that hit the crossbar. The offensive team is penalized for almost scoring. I just don't get that rule or why it was ever changed. (yes I am a goalie)

I too would like to see the '24 foot like removed as well. Like Chris said it keeps the goalies honest and opens up the floor because you have to worry about defending the outside shot as well. I also think if this were to be implemented that you would get a penalty for dangerous shot even if you hit your own player.

Totally agree with you guys on the draw rule. We even have a guy on our team who can win draws like that, I don't think it's fair. I also can't stand this spinning around crap everyone always does on the draws and these pinched sticks are a direct result of that, both guys spinning and pushing to get the all locked in the plastic.

There's a difference between zone and collapsing on the ball

by (Login dawgbone98)

In that photo, There are 3 whitby players in the 24' arc 3 Brampton players playing d on them and 2 collapsing in to double the ball.

We've always been allowed to double and triple team the ball, so as soon as the ball enters the 24' line you can collapse in providing you are going to the ball. If you look, 44 has the ball and everyone is collapsing on him (not really any different than this one here:http://canadamasterslacrosse.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=3&pos=2).

The problem is too many teams jam the middle of the floor so when you get a guy who drives to the net with the ball, there are a handful of players in the zone. If you watch Welland play, they rarely have more than 1 guy standing in the 24' line on offense. You start getting 2 and 3 people in there and you'll get guys collapsing once the ball gets in there.

Derek....I agree with part of your statement and how teams have been allowed to collapse on D. But I don't think I explained myself correctly.Sorry but that pix definitely illustrates a zone defense that has collasped.Your guys have played according to the rules and started on the dots then collapsed when the ball comes to the net. There are five players in marroon inside the dots(although one marginally)to 3 in white. My point being if you were actually forced to play a true man-on-man you would open up the middle as both Paul and Tyler have commented on.One guying cutting through without the ball shouldn't make the middle congested.Lets get rid of the dots, open up the floor (and passing lanes) and reduce the contact.

by (Login grnecho)

Great Tournament! We had a blast and enjoyed all your hospitality. I see a lot of debate on rules so I thought I would just mention a couple of beneficial changes we have made in our league. They work for us.

Dangerous shot- you can shoot from outside the 24 ft with a clear lane. any body contact with stick or ball is a penalty. only a 2 min. penalty. we have very few people hit. A clear lane means there is no one between the shooter and the goalie, not a shot thru legs.

2 man rule. to speed up transition there is no 2 man rule in the defensive zone. as soon as the ball crosses centre the 2 man rule applies. the 5 sec. rule prevents any ragging. You can get a good fast break started right from the turnover.

Hopefully some of you can make our Calgary Cup Tournament next year. We definitely want to be back for the Nationals.

i was watching one of your games, i think against six nations and overtime.

your player beat their last man around half, ran down and scored what should have been the winning goal, which was quickly called back due to the 5 second rule.

they came back and scored immediately..pretty sure u remember..sorry

that was a shame and was just wondering if you currently or would be in favour of eliminating the 5 second rule if you beat the last man and continue to travel towards the goalie??

Thanks for the bad memories. It was a great game and it was a shame that it ended with a little controversy. They won by the rules though. I just didn't have that one more save in me.
As for the 5 sec rule, that play would normally not be called in Calgary because the player had a step on his opponent which is considered a breakaway. It was open to interpretation by the referee and we have to respect that decision. The rule says that a player with a clear breakaway is not bound by the 5 sec rule so it shouldn't matter when during those 5 secs that the player has a clear run to the net. This is a grey area that is always going to be decided not by increasing the description of the rule but by the interpretation of the rule by each individual referee, and I almost never agree with them anyhow.

Thanks for the compliment. My first time playing in Ontario in about 30 years and I saw a lot of good players and goalies on the weekend. When I have more details on the Calgary Cup I will definitely be posting them. We usually get some BC teams so It will be a truly national tournament if Ontario sends some teams. We play almost the exact same rules as Ontario. We don't have a junior division however but if there is enough interest we could probably put something together.

This was a problem for our team from the beginning of the season with guys backing out at the start and throughout the summer, as witnessed in Huntsville where we had 5 or 6 runners. This makes us look bad I know but for the guys like myself and a few others who were committed we apologize to the League and the other teams for missing the tourney. I really was looking forward to playing like always.

Jr. Pools?????

by notahawk (Login notahawk)

I have to ask the question as I wasn't at the seeding meeting.
There are five teams in the 1st pool....including Whitby 1, Brooklin, Brampton, Orangeville, Mimico. Each team plays one another once.
Am I to assume that after all round robin play for all pools that the top six teams combined from all pools will move forward with the best two getting a bye to the semis.? or is it that the top two teams coming out of this first pool will both receive a bye to the semis.?

Would love to know how this is going to work?

Rules are here:

by Derek Blasutti (Login dawgbone98)

http://www.ontariolacrosse.com/documents/content_1080.pdf

Go to page 6 and it shows you the break down for 13 teams:

A: 1 4 7 10 13
B: 2 5 8 11
C: 3 6 9 12

Teams in all play RR in own Pool

After the Round Robin 1st and 2nd of Pools B and C will have a playoff game, with crossover.

1st and 2nd of Pool A will advance having played 4 games already

Six games to win championship

So basically you need to finish 1st or 2nd in your pool to advance.

B1 vs C2 and C1 vs B2 in a QF, winners advance to QF.

A1 & A2 advance to semi-finals.

Top 2 teams in group A go directly to semis as they play 4 games already.

Top 2 in B & C group play a quarter final with a cross over 1 playing 2 in the other pool.

In the semis highest rank plays the lowest rank etc.

Then the pools are wrong.....

by notahawk (Login notahawk)

If after the quarters, if the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams get to the semis the problem is the 1st and 4th placed teams must play again!
Doesn't make sense.

In reality, the 1st and 2nd ranked teams should be in pool A to start with and that would eliminate this happening.

I know anything can happen...but really that is why we rank teams to begin with.

Let me know your thoughts on this....

I agree... if the top two teams from A pool dont have an elimination game prior to Semis then teams ranked 1 and 2 should've been in pool A...

1st and 4th do not play again...

by (Login dawgbone98)

You need to play 4 games to get into the semi-finals...

The winners of pool A automatically get a buy into the semi-finals. B1 plays C2 and C1 plays B2 in the quarterfinals to see who plays A1 & A2.

In the end, it still stacks the deck in favour of 1,2,3 and 4 advancing to the QF's... 1 and 4 are in the more difficult pool but they have the benefit of not facing an elimination game until the Semi's.

If you look at it in terms of strength of schedule and give the #1 seed 13 points and #13 1 point, here is out it worksout (we'll assume the highest ranked teams from each pool advance):

#1 Whitby - Brooklin (10), Brampton (7), Orangeville (4), Mimico (1) - 22
#2 Toronto - London (9), Six Nations (6), Georgian Bay (3), Barrie**(8) - 26
#3 Welland - Barrie (8), Huntsville (5), Aurora (2) - 15, London**(9) - 24
#4 Brooklin - Whitby (13), Brampton (7), Orangeville (4), Mimico (1) - 25

= semi-final

So in terms of strength of schedule, they are all pretty close after 4 games... #1 has a clear advantage (as they should), but 2-4 are pretty close, and if you consider that there is a chance that Toronto might not have to face London in a quarter-final match (same with Welland vs Barrie), that could potentially decrease their difficulty down.

I don't think it's perfect by any means, but I don't think it's too out of whack. #2 probably gets punished a bit (it should probably go 2,6,8,12 and 3,5,9,11... both with a difficulty of 25), but it's not too far out of whack.

re:1 and 4 don't play again

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

After the quarter finals the seedings go back to the original rankings(for the semi match-ups) and it is possible 1vs 4 could happen if both 2 and 3 seeds advance. Because 1 would get the lowest ranked team.the system is not perfect but that is the way the rules are written.......Good luck to all ......

odd to go back to seedings for semis

by notahawk (Login notahawk)

my thought is still why award the #4 seed (not #2)the opportunity to have to play against #7, #10, #13 without an elimination threat and get a bye to the semis.

I would have to think the top 2 teams as rated by all should receive the best treatment.

By placing #1 and #2 in Pool A, you could eliminate the good chance of #1 and #4 playing twice against each other (prior to the final).

For example, #1 runs the table and #2 wins their other three games in pool play.
Then #1 would play the winner of 2nd Quarter Final and #2 would play winner of 1st quarter final.

By setting the tournament schedule up cleaner, there wouldn't be a need to go back to pre-tournament seedings.....hence if an upset does occur in the quarter, the schedule doesn't magically change for the better for the highest ranked team and doesn't hammer down on a cinderella. More of a bracket format could follow all pool play.

Just some thoughts as we wait for the week-end.

Anyone know if there will be overtime in pool games??????

Not sure If I'd call it awarding...

by (Login dawgbone98)

considering they still need to play the #1 seed.

The top 3 seeds can each afford to lose 1 game and advance. 2 losses may be pushing it. You put 1 and 2 together and one team gets a loss in their head to head meaning neither team can afford a 2nd loss.

The only real benefit to being in that pool is the automatic berth into the semi-finals. The downside is that the initial schedule to get there is more difficult.

As for your example, the reason you re-seed is to continue to award the teams who ranked highest. You could still do A1 v Semi-final 1 and A2 v semi-final 2 the way it's currently set up (there's no difference from your proposition), but you re-rank so that the teams who finish higher benefit from the seasons worth of work they did.

our game is suffering because..

by tyler (Login roadrunner007)

It is clear to me what this game needs to solve 90 percent of its problems.

So much wacking, hacking, clutching and grabbing takes place inside of the "dotted line", because that is the only place you can score from. I can take it, and almost take pride in my sunday evening bruise and bump searches, but there is a way to minimize this.

Far less injuries would result and far less penalties if we introduce a crazy rule...bringing back the true skill of our game.......shooting the lacrosse ball from anywhere.

4 minute penalty if you hit someone, or a 2 minute and possesion, or a 2 minute and penalty shot.

I have played masters for 4 years now and still am unsure, as well as the referees, as to when I have this magical "clear lane" that they speak of. I just learned from a referee in owen sound that apparently a clear lane is required on a power play...

This will open up our game and I hope a lot of you push for this @ agm?!?!

couldn't agree more. This was talked about at length at the last AGM and seemed to have a lot of support. It was suggested, however that we leave the rules as is for this year because we were having a Nationals and we didn;t want to make any significant rule changes with all the Out of Province teams coming.
well that sure was a waste. It'll be changed next year. Hopefully

I couldn't agree more either. or another thing that would help stop the clutching and grabbing is to allow picks to be set ( non contact pick )
or here is another thing ( nothing to do with clutching and grabbing ) no 5 sec. rulle untill the ball is over half this will give both teams a chance to change as well it will open up some scoring opportunities for some quick long break passing.

Just a few more ideas to add to the overwhelming amount already on the table.

You can set a non contact pick

by Derek Blasutti (Login dawgbone98)

The key word is non contact though.

You can't set a non contact pick in the traditional sense... because the idea is to impede and create contact. I can't stop beside a defender and let my guy pop up, but I can run past and have my guy loop around.

For instance if I'm on the top left I can run down to the bottom lef and my guy can run from the bottom left to the top left. When we cross paths, I'm essentially cutting off his defender. As long as I am not running at the defender covering him, it's fine.

5 sec. rule

by drawman (Login drawman)

You cant have this rule without putting in a minimum time to get over center, as teams
will kill the clock in their own end simply by having one player hold the ball for 30 secs.
But it is workable.

..5 second rule

by tyler (Login roadrunner007)

In my opinion the 5 second rule only needs one change. If I pick off a pass in my defensive zone and beat your top guy, that only leaves me with like 4 seconds to run down and shoot on ur goalie. In these situations usually a stupid shot is taken, or reffy blows the whistle right after the shot...

If you beat a man and maintain forward progress to the net, get rid of the 5 second in that situation.

RE -Our game is suffering because

by (Login finnesd)

I have to agree with the original message and thoughts , as i have played senior for many yrs and still struggle with the so called Clear Lane .I like the idea of being able to take a responsible shot at net from anywhere on the floor. From my past experiences the real problems start when you cross that 24 ft line and teams immediately collapse into the outlawed ZONE defence. This is where the most serious contact takes place and the chance of hitting someone with the ball Greatly increases. If we could shoot from anywhere, fully aware that there will be a penalty of some kind if you hit someone ,then defences wont have the time to collapse in front of thier goalie. The great debate here would be What should the penalty be for hitting another player with the Ball..?

Re: RE -Our game is suffering because

by CagedAnimal (Login CagedAnimal)

Allowing shots from anywhere is not making things safe. If you are on the hook for your own shots, a guy takes a wild shot and hits someone. If you are lucky it grazes the guy and he is not seriously hurt. But that is not always the case. The guys are not wearing any equipment so the player that gets hit is out of the game sometimes but the shooter is back in 2mins or less. You wouldn't like it if it happened to you.

make the penalty stiffer

by (Login dawgbone98)

A shot from inside the dots that hits a player is the same 2 minute minor.

A shot from outside the dots that hits a player is a 2 minute minor + penalty shot (and counts as 2 penalties). And it doesn't matter whether you hit your player or the other player, it's a dangerous shot and it counts the same way.

Maybe this stops the guys from standing inside the dots and not looking at the ball, allowing the middle to be opened up more.

Gord-i agree that getting hit by a shot would hurt, I guess that is an element of danger that needs to be present. It will make the game better than worse and that dotted line needs to go.

What derek said is correct..2 + 2 or a penalty shot as well...

Install the rule for the 1st tourney next year and vote on sunday..dunno

Dangerous shot

by (Login Zacher)

Greetings,

If safety takes priority over all else then I would like to suggested the following: Anyone who launches a shot at the net and hits another person with the ball or his stick would receive a double minor. If it is deem that it was intentional, then a 5 minute major would be assessed.

The only exception would be if a defender is standing in the crease or moves into the path of the ball in an attempt to block the shot.

Personally, if we apply this rule, I would suggest removing the 24' dotted line which will allow shots from anywhere from the floor. Keeping in mind that shooter has to exercise due diligence to ensure everyone's safety on the floor.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Dangerous shot

by tyler (Login roadrunner007)

..so by removing the dotted line you mean it is also okay to play a zone? (the ref would not have lines to gauge the defense's location)

IF that is what you mean, i think that will have the opposite effect that we should hope to achieve. it would then be ONLY outside shots at that time and no more inside goals.

is it true that they were going to change this rule last year but neglected to because of nationals? is it a shoe-in for junior and senior or do i have to keep coming on here and whining about it?

Interesting point

by (Login Zacher)

It is interesting to note that changing or modifying one rule will impact the interpretation and enforcement of another.

Removing the 24' dotted line can apply to both a dangerous shot and the area were individuals have to play man to man. If you wanted to apply a more conservative approach to this rule change, I would favour pulling the 24' line for outside shots only. This would examine the benefits/drawbacks of this modification while maintaining the 24' for the zone calls. The other method would be drop the 24 for both shots and zone calls making players have to play man to man at some other clearly maker area (half, nearest restraining line, etc) were the players had to man up.

Either way, I think it will lead to an improvement of the game and some very interesting discussions!

Cheers,

Jim

Man on man at half

by (Login dawgbone98)

This seems to benefit the lazy teams who don't want to run up and down the floor.

If your team makes the effort to get people back on defense, you shouldn't be punished because the other team runs a 3-man offensive set while leaving 2 guys at centre.

It would turn the game into nothing but 1 on 1 offensive sets. Stand 4 offensive players at the restraining line and get the ball to your one guy low for a 1 on 1.

The diection of the Masters game

by (Login Zacher)

After watching both the Senior and Junior A finals this weekend in Welland it was quite apparent that the level of talent on the floor is truly amazing. The end to end action was extremely entertaining to watch which included some inspiring plays. Masters lacrosse was well represented this day. The only wrinkle was the staggering amount of body contact. It had to escalate to full body check or a stick across the back of the head before a penalty was called. It was interesting to note that each team dished out as much as the officials would allow before crossing that line. My question is quite simple Is this the direction the majority of Masters players want to proceed towards? Non-contact lacrosse is just that non-contact. When did it become permissible to cross check every person who runs through the 24 circle regardless if they had possession of the ball? On the other side of the fence, when did we stop calling offensive charges? Both these items should be considered as unit rather than in isolation.

My concerns are two fold. First, if the level of contact escalates without proper protection, then so to will the risk of injury. I dont know who would be liable for any injury which resulted from an action deemed as contact. Second, I enjoy playing a game which flows back and forth without the body to body or stick to body contact. As a defensive player it is a challenge to cover my man without the contact. Ill even concede a goal or two if my offensive players were afforded the same courtesy on the other side of the floor. One adhoc observation is that the contact issue becomes more prevalent with the higher Championship rounds. Considering our usual placement we enjoy the spirited competition with the other team on Sunday morning. Usually the only burses which may occur are egos from a missed scoring opportunities or blown passes.

The rules are quite clear with respect to the issues addressed. My inquiry is to see how the majority of players wish the rules to be implemented. I would like you thoughts on the matter to see whether we discuss this at the upcoming Masters AGM in the fall.

Cheers,

Jim

nationals direction

by kenlax ( oakville) (Login kenlax)

interesting thoughts Jim and well thought out. If it was as bad as you suggest it was in Welland this past weekend and as bad as the Provincials was last year, I agree we need to seriously rethink how we want our game to move forward. I know at the last AGM there was quite a bit of discussion around this and other issues(ie outside shot, zone defence, stick checking etc.) and if memory serves me correctly, we had mostly all agreed that there was no need to make sweeping changes to the rules but rather, enforce the existing rules more stringintly. It appears as if this has not worked. I am still unsure as to when a stick check is a penalty or merely a possession change and I have asked numerous officials for an explanation several times only to get completely different answers. I for one will be looking to not only discuss, but make changes to the existing rules to make it crystal clear to everyone. In saying all this, Im not blaming the officials as they have really come a long way in a couple of years, we as a group of players MUST realize this is NOT the Mann Cup. We are older, rickety men for the most part with families and jobs.We should be relying on our stick and ball skills more than the physical side of the game. I think there can be a balance struck between being competitive and slashing a guy in the arm as he cuts through the middle.
just my 2 cents

My thoughts on nationals

by Maybesoccernextyear (Login billonhisown)

As of now one team has been confirmed from out west for Senior Masters. And zero teams have confirmed for the junior division... As far as the extra $200 that the juniors are paying for the "Nationals" although it's going to be a provincial tournament, I'm guessing that they will come up with a very valid excuse as to why they will keep our money.
They always do. So far this year the OLA has proven that they are incapable of making the right decision or one that has gone through any thought process at any level. I.E. look at the Junior B playoff fiasco. So fellas kiss your $200 good bye.

by (Login dawgbone98)

And like I said, part of it was based on reputation and what I've seen. For instance Welland has always been a dominant team but they haven't made an A final this year, so perhaps they are ranked a tad high.

In reality I think the top 8 or 9 are all capable of beating each other at any point in time (and I think that's basically been done). Even Orangeville can do some damage depending on how many guys they've qualified and that.

And FTR, I was just doing it to spark conversation... I'm sure everyone has a different set of rankings based on who they've played.

Nationals

by Masterlax (Login lax6800)

Any word on how many teams are coming from out of province for the Nationals. Things have been very quite on the Nationals. Did we pay more for nothing this year? It would be nice to get an update if anyone has one.

Welland Schedule

by Dan McWhirter (Login laxplyr32)

Sorry Trevor but I am going to have to post this whether you like it or not.

Now I see what happens when you are the team that complains about a tournament schedule.

It gets you the second last game on Friday night...10pm.

It gets you the first game on Saturday morning....9am.

Which brings you to a 6 hour gap in between the second and third games. Who the heck wants to play a game at 9am and then wait until 4pm to play the next game.

Honestly this is beginning to be a total joke.

Masters Tourneys

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

I have noticed a lot of comments lately from the Jr. teams regarding the second class treatment some feel they are receiving.I was not at the latest two tourneys but I have felt in the past that in some cases the division that was hosting that particular tourney did favour their division when it came to arena allocation. There are many possible reasonings for this ..ie host team handling raffles, bar and food.etc.(but this also costs a host team potential revenue). However this issue has been addressed before and the masters executive suspposedly had rectified this in past events. We all pay the same fees and we deserve the same treatment (especially since the Jr teams out number the Sr). I personally feel that if u are unhappy with it then maybe your team should put in to host a tourney. They maybe you would gain the comforts of not travelling as much.It appears that some teams have a monoply on hosting tourneys.Nothing personal I have been to practically every town and/or city that hosts and will probably go back. But the league needs to let other teams throw their hat into the mix .......

Masters Tourneys

by kenlax (Login kenlax)

every team has the ability to put their hat in the ring at the Masters AGM. I have attended the last few years and can tell you without a doubt that there is NOT a monopoly by some teams and that we usually have 5 teams volunteer to host, exactly how many Tournaments we have.

re masters tourneys

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

I have been to meetings in the past and while I can't disagree with u ,I have been aware of teams that wanted to host but don't make the attempt because there is an accepted norm of where the tourneys will be.My point in the previous post is if u want the luxury of the "better" or closer arena it appears you may have to host a tourney because it appears the governing bodies don't really care who plays where.....

Since it is the governing body that makes up the schedule (not the Host of the tourney), you are 1/2 correct.

half right

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

re-read my posts..at no time did I say that the host team set the schedule....only that it seemed to accomodate the host team and their respective division....u r correct it is the governing bodies that finalize things ...point being people should step up and/or voice their opinions to those "in-charge".........

What?

by (Login laxkid)

So you're saying that if teams want the comforts of actually playing in the same city/town that the tournament is hosted then they need to host the tourney to get that. I don't think that the whole "playing at the "good" rink" is even the issue. The issue is that we don't get our schedule until a week or even a few days before the event begins, hotels and campsites are booked well in advance of tournament dates, how much of a kick in the balls is it that you go to a tournament and have booked in that city only to find out you're actually not playing any games in the town you booked your accommodations and now have a half hour drive to get to your games.

Who played all their games at Meaford. Juniors. Who played all their games at Baysville, mostly juniors.

However. From talking to 5 or 6 of the junior reps at the last two tournaments it seems that none of us actually care where we play, we just need to know where our games are going to be in order to make proper plans for accommodation.

Now if this whole problem is because host's don't know what rinks they can use due to availability a few weeks before then that's fine but maybe the sched's need to be tweeked a little bit if things don't go according to plan. We just need to know.

Just for the record i'm not ripping on any hosts. You all do a great job and if you didn't put these things on for us we wouldn't even have a league. OS guys you did a great job, especially on the Junior side with the problems you had to put up with to start the tourney.

what

by Chris O'Reilly (Login gaels19)

league governs to the host team.....i understand the advance notice issue and u make a great point....with the matrix that was developed years ago the schedules should be able to be posted earlier than in the past with their locations.....i am sure most people would understand last minute changes should they arise.....

Jr vs. Sr...

by (Login hawkeye_420)

I agree, the seniors are getting better game times and arenas. I understand that the home team doesn't decide the schedule and all that stuff, but it is deff something we at our meetings will have to address. London Jr had a game in Baysville friday night at 11 pm... it was a super late game which happens, (played 11 pm in NOTL too), not a huge deal. However, there wasn't a game in Huntsville at 11 at all? Question, why didn't we play in Huntsville? I just think that we have to ensure both JR. and SR teams are getting same treatment.

Huntsville JR backing out of OS did really mess everything up. There was a lot of unfair situations that came out of that which will have to be addressed as well.
