Vojtek - Soldier Bear

by

Dear All,

I am a freelance journalist and film maker and I am making a film about Vojtek - The soldier bear. I would be glad to hear from anyone who has any information regarding Vojtek and I am especially keen to make contact with any surviving veteran from the 2nd Artillery Supply Company of the 2nd Polish Corps. I would also be happy to hear from anyone in Scotland who knew or saw Vojtek while he was in Winfiled Camp in Berwickshire. Please if you can be of any assistance contact me via email. Thank you.

Wrestling with Voytek

by

As a side note, I do remember my father saying that when he was with the 3rd Carpathians, he actually wrestled with Voytek.
The Bear loved to wrestle with his friends .... the Polish troops.

Voytek the Bear

by

Dear Donald,

Watched a recent Channel 5 production on Poland and WW2 which Voytek the bear was featured several times. Just wondered if anything came of the film you had planned to make about him? I tried e-mailing you but your address is no longer valid.
An old Polish war veteran gave me cuttings from a newspaper some years back, which had serialised the story. Great reading.

Can You Help?.

by

Hello Kenneth. Hope you don't mind me asking, but do you still have the newspaper cuttings re. Voytek the bear?. If so could you possibly tell me the Newspaper title and date, from which I should be able to retrieve the article/serial from their archives. I am after this info. for a friend who is involved in trying to get a statue erected in the Borders, near to where Voytek was last billeted. Regards & thanks for your time taken in reading this unsolicited message.
Sincerely, J.G. Brydon.

Wojtek's Statue

by

I understand that when Wojtek was demobbed after the war, he was retired to Edinburgh Zoo and died aged 22.
A recent program on UK History TV showed a statue put up in remembrance of Wojtek, the Polish Soldier Bear.
Does anyone know where this statue is and/or if there are any photos available?

WOJTEK'S STATUE MIGHT BE IN LONDON.

by

I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE STATUE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BUT THERE IS A BRONZE STATUE/SCULPTURE OF WOJTEK IN THE SIKORSKI INSTITUTE IN LONDON, HE MEETS YOU AS YOU ENTER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIR. I WILL TAKE A PICTURE OF HIM WHEN I AM BACK DOWN IN SEPTEMBER.
WITH THE PASSING OF THE 6O YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE AT MONTE CASSINO MAY 18TH 2004 I THINK IT IS ABOUT TIME WE SAW A LITTLE BIT MORE RECOGNITION NOT ONLY OF THE EFFORTS OF THE POLES DURING WW2 ESPECIALLY IN ITALY BUT MAYBE IT IS ABOUT TIME WOJTEK RECEIVED SOME MORE RECOGNITION FOR HIS REMARKABLE EFFORTS DURING THE ITALIAN CAMPAIGN. SCOTLAND SHOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD TO BE THE PLACE HE CAME TO LIVE AFTER HE HAD BEEN SO LOYAL TO HIS POLISH COMRADES.
IF ANYONE KNOWS BETTER PLEASE LET ME KNOW I WOULD LOVE TO VISIT ANY OF HIS STATUE'S, WHERE EVER THEY MAY BE.
DOES HE HAVE A GRAVE?

Wojtek's Statue - Sikorski Museum

by Donald Harding

Hi,
There is a statue of Wojtek made by my father, David Harding, which sits in the Sikorski Museum. He made it for the Posthouse Hotel which was built next to Edinburgh zoo. When the hotel was redesigned many years later, they decided to donate the statue to the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London.
Best wishes,
Donald

Radom Poland 1945

by

My father's family lived in Radom when Germany invaded Poland. Are you looking for specific details about the action Radom was experiencing at this time? My father was approx 19 years old when war broke out and was training at Officer's Signal School in Krakow. He was interned in Hungary and Switzerland and any memoirs of Radom 1945 may be scant (i.e. his brother and sister's recollections - they are still alive and living in Radom)
