Polish Aircrew in Scotland, WW2.

by

As a member of the Scottish Saltire Branch of the Aircrew Association, I am
interested in finding out about Polish Aircrew who flew from bases in Scotland during WW2.

Better still, are there any surviving members living in Scotland who can describe their personal experiences of flying from bases in Scotland?

Regards - - Jack Burgess.

re-settlement of Poles in Kazakhstan after the Red Army invasion

by

Dear Sirs,

I have recently met a 79 year-old Polish gentleman (the husband of a colleague at work) who was 14 when Germany invaded Poland. His father was a doctor and life under the German occupation was tolerable for a while. When Poland was partitioned, he found he and his family found themselves under Russian occupation. Their fortune changed. His father was, first, brutally interrogated, then released. Shortly afterwards, the family was notified it was to be re-settled in Kazakhstan. Immediately before the cattle-truck train was to depart, his father was separated from them. They never saw him again and later learned that he had been shot.

Placed in a camp in Kazakhstan, the son volunteered to join the Polish Army (then used as a tool for converting Poles to the Red Army cause). Refused at first because he was only 14, he came back to the recruiting stall a year or two later, and was then admitted to the Polish Army. He was sent to the Polish Military School, coincidentally and topically, in Beirut, Lebanon. His training took him to the end of the war, when he elected to stay in the Free West, being sent to Liverpool. He won a place and supported himself at London University, studying to be an architect, joined a well-known of architects working on large-scale projects all over the world and settled finally in Edinburgh where he now still stays. He has been naturalised as a British citizen for many years.

The story, even in this brief outline, is fascinating and should, in my respectful view, be recorded somewhere in British history. Is there some means by which his written or oral word can be recorded and archived, perhaps at IWM, for posterity's sake? Would that be of any interest to the Museum, may I please ask?

Yours faithfully,

Tom McMorrow

Poles in Edinburgh

by

Hi everyone!

I should really begin here by introducing myself. My name's Callum McLeod and I'm employed by the City of Edinburgh Council to manage a community centre in Leith Edinburgh.

Part of my role is to develop facilities within the centre and these services are intended to correspond with the changing demography of the local area. So here goes!

One of the things that I've been picking up fairly often are comments about people moving into the area from Eastern Europe. This hasn't been on any scientific basis, but through the bits of information that are passed on to me. It's been a longish process but in trying to piece things together it seems like the largest proportion the people moving into the area from Eastern Europe are moving here from Poland. At this point I should apologise for not being able to speak Polish but I'm really keen to engage with any section of the community in whatever way I can - hence using this forum!

At this point I'm unsure as to what could be run here - perhaps a music group, a poetry one, one that focusses on culture, food, sports or a whole heap of other things that might have a Polish element to it. The long and short of it is that I have a great deal of facilities here that aren't representative of the local community and I'm trying to "touch base" with people from Poland in Leith.

If you've any ideas or suggestions on potential groups or clubs, or other ways that I might be able to contact with people in Leith from Poland, then please get in touch by phoning me on 0131 553 1074 or email me at callum.mcleod@educ.edin.gov.uk

cheers and thanks for your help

Polish Soldier

by

Trying to find out information about my father - such as: full name, regiment, unit etc. He was a Private in the Polish Army and was stationed in Tillicoultry,(billeted in Uppermill Street) Clackmannananshire, certainly around the period 1943-44. He was known by the names of Wladek Tadeusz. My mother's name was Mary Leyden,(also known as May). She had the nickname of 'Ginger'-(she had red/auburn hair). She came from Glasgow and worked in the Naafi in Tillicoultry, during the War Years. She made friends with another girl, who also worked in the Naafi - Nan Jeffrey,(she had the nickname of Jeff) and came from Falkirk. At that time, the two of them, along with a third girl, stayed in digs, in the main street in Tillicoltry.
However, when I was born (December 1944), my mother by this time was staying with a lady called Rose Draper, at 23 Greenhead, ALVA.

Although my mother never married the Polish soldier, my mother's friend, Nan Jeffrey told me that my mother had a long standing relationship with him.

I have no idea what happened to him after the War ended.

If these details jog someones memory, or if they know of anybody who might be able to help (no matter how little) please contact me.

Email: rozer@tiscali.co.uk

Yours Sincerely,

Ros Rennie

The Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London does not have a website. You would have to write to the archivist there.
I doubt whether they would have records in the USA.

Likewise the Ministry of Defence, although they have a website which gives the same address for Polish Army enquiries which I have given you and to which you would have to write, stating your relationship to Karl Staszkiewicz. Look under Ministry of Defence. Good luck.

Search for book

by

I am a bookdealer based in Perth, Scotland, dealing with military, aviation and historical books and have been asked by a customer for a book written by Boris Karnicki, Commander of a submarine (ORP Sokol) during WWll. It may have been based in Dundee. I think the title may be "Memoirs of Boris Karnicki" or similar. I have not had any success in finding this book - which I beleive is now out of print. Does anyone know if it is available?
Thanks.

Your book was published in 1987 in Polish under the title "Marynarski worek wspomnien" (Sailor's bag of memories),paperback of 175 pages with photos. Have a look at http://www.uboat.net/books where you will see fuller information. I found this info through Google! All the best, Peter.
