I'm interested in hearing from the coaches around the state about the Josh Nelson transfer. Please don't think I'm bashing on Josh, because I'm not! I am just interested in hearing whether or not if he transfered to your team this late in the year, if you would move out your season long 130lbr and let Josh wrestle. Very tough decision. What do you think? Tough to penalize Josh just because he moved, but also tough to look that old 130lbr in the eye each day at practice!

Hey Big Al,

by justanotherbleachercoach (no login)

This is why the coaches get paid the big bucks to make these decisions. Apparently, they were open so it is not a problem. I am sure it was a tough move for Josh to leave a team like Millard North, but I for one welcome him into our District C-4. I have seen him wrestle and he is going to be darn good. Bring on the big dogs, we like the competition.

Re: Re: Brandon Cox?

That seems pretty convenient! Was it a 10 day suspension, 5 day, 15 day....Or did it just happened to be lifted right before districts? I would think the NSAA would have their own penalty for such violations. By the way, I'm also all for drug testing every district qualifier.

Re: Re: Re: Brandon Cox?

by Brett Shuler (no login)

In many cases like this the coach's hands are tied as to what should be done with a wrestler who breaks the rules. Each school has it's own policy dealing with these matters. I disagree with you on one point however. I don't think the NSAA should get involved in issues of this nature. Personally, I think the NSAA is too involved with setting school athletic policy as it is, but that is a separate matter. I am not stating an opinion as to whether or not the wrestler in question should be able to compete in districts. It is not my place to do so. I am just pointing out that each school handles it's own problems in it's own way and that is how it should be.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Brandon Cox?

I guess I see your point in the NSAA not getting involved, but the reason I mentioned it was because they seem so involved already. They make competition rules, transfer rules, practice rules, DQ rules, etc. It seems that if they think it's so important to monitor an athletes weight between the 103 & 275 scale checks, they may want to set a standard for MIP, police arrests, drug tests, etc. I know it will never happen, just a bitch session for me.

East Husker Conference Tournament

by Lance Stallion (no login)

This should be an entertaining tournament this Saturday at Wisner. Schools participating are Tekamah-Herman, North Bend, Oakland-Craig, Pender, Stanton, West Point, Scribner-Snyder, Logan View, and Wisner-Pilger. It should be interesting to see if anyone can slow down the North Bend juggernaut.

sorry...

by Lance Stallion (no login)

I'm not trying to put any added pressure on tournament directors to post these. I did this mainly for the coaches in my district so they could have a way to check spellings, grades, records, etc. instead of e-mailing back and forth the entire time. Also so the wrestlers from the district can see what they're up against, and maybe help HB with his district predictions. (Not that he did a bad job...just trying to help out even more) Maybe I should have waited with MY district preview until I had gotten all of this information!

Only complaint

by HB (no login)

is that there is nearly half the seating that there was last year. I would have loved to have gone to this dual but I didn't have the time to get down to Skutt during the week to get tickets. I was there last year and it was a great atmosphere for wrestling. I just wish that every wrestling fan that wanted to attend had the opportunity. Good luck to your team Thursday night RJ.

There was about 200 tickets still available this afternoon. Should sell out by Wed. afternoon.

It is unfortunate that our gym is not as big as LC, but the smaller gym may make for a even better atmosphere. This is without a doubt the best thing for wrestling in the area. Although I actually saw posts on Omaha.com complaining about the OWH making too big a deal out of this dual. People complain about no coverage and now they complain about too much?

It's too bad more duals didn't get this kind of hype.

Tickets for sale!

We have tickets for sale at our Arlington vs. Bennington dual on Thursday, Jan 31. They go on sale starting Thursday about 6:30 (or whenever the ticket lady gets the table set up at our door). So hurry while they last. Actually you won't get a ticket but you will get a mark on your hand.

Good luck Brad, RJ, and Skutt wrestlers!

Lundstrom is wrestling strong. well see how he does at Conference, but by the time state comes he'll be back wrestling better than last year at this time. Andreson and Pyzdek will be a good match for him but if he wrestles like he can he'll take the title

The kids I'm aware of are Jay Sherer, Columbus 115 lbs., Aaron Denson 110-lbs., Greg Garcia 95 lbs. from Millard South and Kyle Svendson either 105 or 110 lbs. from BJSA are a few that are going.

215A

by Confused (no login)

After looking at the ratings today, you can bet that Kupfer had to be scratching his head. This weight class is going to be a good one to watch. I can't see erspamer even being rated at all or Natisatka. They haven't look very good at all lately. Franks, Gable, and Dekay are more desuring of a rating then these two. But ratings don't mean anything, it is what happens in Feb. that counts. But I am curious, why these two were even considered.

215 A

by Not so confused! (no login)

Well, I hate to see people confused, but clearly by your question or pondering, you are confused. Sounds almost like the series - Clueless.

If you examine a few of the finer points, you will see a wt. class, that on a given day could have several different state placers. Given this, any ranking might not be a bad ranking.

However, Natisatka has beaten some very fine opponents. I think he might have even beaten Franks before. He had a poor Metro, but has enough stuff to place at state.

Erspamer has split with Nas. and has been beaten by Franks and has beaten DeKay.

DeKay has beaten some pretty good guys as well but has lost to Franks and others as well.

Gable finished second at Metro but should have been stalled out against Nas and he didn't even place at M.W.

So confused, how do you see the rankings at 215, and what information would you use to rank them?

Then you can forward all this information to Kupfer and he will rank them the right way for you.

Re: 215 A

by Anonymous (no login)

Well, Mr.not so confused. I think you kind of missed his point. It didn't sound as though he was being vary critical of Mr. Kupfer. He was making the point that it wasn't an easy class to rate. So if Mr. Kupfer is reading I don't think that he should take the message the wrong way. Erspamer has been beaten by Franks three times I believe and Dekay twice. Nastiatka beat Franks early and then has been pinned twice by Franks and I believe (not sure) but has been beaten by Dekay and Gable as well. Now these are some points that were brought up to show why they propably shouldn't be rated ahead of these others, but it was also mentioned that it will all play out in Febuary. and it will be a great weight class to watch. There are 9 or 10 guys that could place and place high at state. We will just have to see which guys show up to wrestle.

I dont know how anyone thinks this Dekay is that great what did he even place at Metro?????
also I dont think he has beaten Nasiatka....and if he hasnt i dont think he can because he is such a sucker for the head throw.....i would know.....(no offense)
Dekay just doenst have any offense....he is great at stalling.....but thats about it......
hope no ones feelings were hurt too much

Remember you have to consider the source. This is the same person that dosn't consider Bret Allgood as one of the best in the state!!! He must have been watching Giligan's Island when he thought about the ratings.

Elm Creek

by Anonymous (no login)

I don't remember everything, but Hayes didn't wrestle (still recovering from his bout with mono) Turner didn't wrestle (flu bug or something going around Elm Creek last week, only 4 or 5 Elm Creek wrestlers actually were able to wrestle) Daake tech-falled some kid from the Lincoln East JV's in the finals

I was wondering if you guys could help me. I am currently updating the wrestling alum directory for Marc Bauer at Kearney State College/UNK. If you would know any addresses please post them or email me. We currently need them for the newsletter, and so we can have a get together of some kind this spring. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Good to see you Bjorn

by HB (no login)

I'm sure you don't remember this but when I was in like 7th or 8th grade you were wrestling down at state and made it to the semis to go against Brian Duran of Nebraska City. At that time Duran was the baddest HWT on the planet and had pinned like 30 straight opponents. You were sitting up in the stands and a friend and I were talking to you about wrestling Duran and you went out and pulled off one of the biggest shockers in state meet history.

That seems like a really long time ago. I wish he would have been able to finish his college career so we could see how he would have done in Division I. It is that time of year though, and I can't wait to see how things shake out down at the state meet.

BJ had an excellent career. He would be a great candidate for the Nebraska Wrestling Hall of Fame. He has been out of high school for over ten years. He was a 2x state champ and a 2x All-American at Nebraska-Kearney. Who ever nominates people for induction should put BJ on the ballott because his accomplishments are worthy.

by HB (no login)

Depends on if we are talking about the greatest wrestler or the greatest career. Miller could have taken anyone on any given day but he didn't have the best career ever because he lost his freshman year and his senior year. So best wrestler ever? I say top 5...best career ever? That's a debate that involves Vering and Allgood.

Re: who do you think is the best ever?

by mb (no login)

When deciding who was the best wrestler in the history of Nebraska Wrestling I think it is important to consider more than High Scholl stats. There has been an awful lot of 3x state champs and winning 4 is becoming common. Of the 4x state champ club none have panned out as of yet at the college ranks. A couple things should be taken into consideration. Who did they beat for these titles? What weights did they win them at? How dominate were they? How well did they do in college? And yes what class did they win them in? There is not a large talent pool in Nebraska to begin with and with 4 classes it gets watered down even worse. By this crirteria here is my list of the best wrestlers who dominated in both high school and college.
1. The best is Brad Vering DI Champ 2. Roy Oliver DI All-American3. Braumon Creighton 2x DII Champ 4. R.J Neibe 2x DII Chamo 5. Rudy Glur NAIA Champ6. Brian Hagan NAIA Champ. These are just a few that had success on both levels.

Well I don't know about the best ever.
But Dave Walton was pretty good.. 2X State Champ and 1 3rd place, in Nebraska, in New York his freshman here he got 2nd, losing to Gene Mills by just a few points, Gene Mills eventually being a national champion. Dave Walton also was on the 1980 olympic team or an alternate, I believe. He also was on the Poland Team, coached by Rick Allgood and Harry Gaylor, and went undefeated while there. I believe he also has a excellent career as a child too.. He also beat Ryan Kaufman I think twice, while in high school.

When you talk about the best of all time, guys to consider are Meneely(3X Champ soon to be 4X), McKim(3X Champ & 4X finalist), and Sorensen(Champ, 2X finalist, & probably end up 3X Champ). Allgood beat them all convincingly including several other state champs. No one has even came close to Allgood in years. There is no wrestler in the history of Nebraska wrestling that has dominated like Allgood for all 4 years not even Metzler.

I must agree that ON THE MAT, Allgood is definately the best. However, considering the trouble he has been in during his four years, I would like to bestow the crown to someone else. Kohl dominated better than most anyone I have seen in recent history. Not too many Nebraska wrestled the National competition DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR that Kohl did at Skutt. Beast of the East tournament, Gable Classic, Platte County, etc.
Just my opinion. Go ahead and bash it.

What does that

by HB (no login)

have to do with the price of rice in China? That's the worst criteria I've ever seen to rank a wrestler-behavior off the mat? Who the hell cares-we're talking about what a kid has accomplished while wrestling. Allgood has had a total of like 3 matches out of 131 in his HS career in which he has not major decisioned, tech falled or pinned his opponents. McKim, Meneely and Pogge are the only ones I can think of that stayed within 5 points of him. And didn't McKim beat Kohl? As for out of state...that's so overrated. I saw earlier this year that Rotella went over to Iowa and beat their 3rd ranked kid. I guess if Brett wrestled over there he would get beat.

HB, take a chill pill

by Anonymous (no login)

I said that he was the best on the mat! I'm simply stating that bestowing an honor on him, if there was such a thing, would be a little tainted. Some people don' win the honors they deserve because of their off the field actions. See Heisman trophy candidates, Hall of Fame candidates, Coach of the year candidates, etc. In case you missed it again, I truly believe that Allgood could be the most talented wrestler in Nebraska history. Every time I see those hips in action it is amazing.

It Depends...

by Jeremy (no login)

Best career is obviously Brett Allgood, that kid is jus plain dominant. David Miller, what can you say about a guy who damn near pins his way through high school. Meneeley(spelling?), wrestles the toughest competition and dominates in amazing fashion. Of course Vering. But remember, those are all recent. If you look at the wrestling records for the State of Nebraska, you HAVE to include Herb Reese, 4x state champion 1944-47, and Fred Brown 4x state champion 1947-50. Wasn't another 4x champ 'til the Nordhues brothers 92-95. Take your pick, any one of the above wrestlers deserves consideration. Hard to pick just one, but to be honest, Vering gets my vote, wrestled at a much higher weight than Allgood, had to deal with much older and stronger opponents than Allgood did his freshmen and sophomore years. Just my opinion though.

Ben Perkins

by Anonymous (no login)

I would have to say Ben Perkins, he was a natural. Ben was so dominate over his years in high school and he too, was in the middle to upper weights through high school. His freshman year he had some real studs in his bracket at state. After that 1st year he just took over the competition. Ben gets my vote. If this guy would have had any amount of work ethic he just might have maybe been like Cael Sanderson. The sad truth is that Ben was just too lazy and took his God given talent for granted.

Whats the criteria??????

by Thrower (no login)

This is very hard if not impossible to do. What is the criteria? Is it folkstyle in HS or what a wrestler does in college? Do you include what a kid did on national level? You may be able to list a top five or ten but as of yet no one has dominated enough to be stamped as the all-time best.

Best Ever

by Ghandhi (no login)

Nobody but nobody is going to agree on a set of criteria. Most of this issues brought up in this forum boild down to conjecture at best. So let us use a measuring stick that I think we all can agree has meaning above and beyond any other: When you look at Brad Vering you see the only Nebraska High School wrester to ever win both Greco and Freestyle titles at Jr. Nationals, and add to that the fact that he dominated - it was no fluke. Sure you can come back with guys who have won the Greco and whatnot, but NONE have ever won both and that cannot be argued.

So HB, let us look at Allgood - If he wins both styles at Jr.'s, then I will be willing to get on his bandwagon, but he hasn't even placed at Jr.'s yet - or am I wrong. To date, Meneely has a pair of 3rds in both events and will be the favorite in both coming into this summer. If Meneely wins both, then he can be considered, along with Vering, as the best of all time. If Allgood finishes here as well, he will be considered as well - if not, then he is another great wrestler almost good enough to be called the best in Nebraska History!

Any money on it HB?

Re: Best Ever

by Anonymous (no login)

So by your criteria, the best ever has to be the best at all 3 styles, not just folkstyle which is all that is done in high school competition. That will eliminate quite a few of the previously named wrestlers and narrow the field to just a couple of wrestlers. Some outstanding wrestlers do very little freestyle or greco so they should not be considered then, right?

Criteria.....

by G (no login)

I think if you would put your wisdom cap on here, you would get past the styles thing a little and get to the meet of the matter - Vering was the BEST in the nation at his weight class - he was able to prove this in the arena of battle (I guess you can get caught up in styles if you want) - It happened during his high school career, and is just one more tidbit of data that would put him above others.

Do you or anyone else know of wrestlers from Nebraska, while they were in high school, who were the best in the nation - bar none? I know Brad was and if all holds true, so will Meneely.

Brad Vering, because he was the best in the nation, was a blue chip recruit. Recruiting, of course, is done using high school data. How many other Nebraska wrestlers were "blue chip" recruits?

These guys are the guys who should be considered on the list of the best ever! Fortunately, Vering was able to back up his blue chip status with a title during his career in Division I.

I'll put more stock in Senior Nationals

by HB (no login)

as far as grading how a kid rates on the all time charts. Vering did not compete in senior national folkstyle, either did Miller, Stalder or Metzler. Kohl finished 7th. As far as the freestyle stuff goes it works both ways...last year in Fargo there was a kid named Justin Pearch from Oregon who wrestled at Brett's weight and was a terror nearly beating the champion (the Hawaii kid that beat Brett). Well guess what? Pearch excels basically in one style and that style is freestyle. He didn't even win a state title in folkstyle last year. In a way Allgood is the same (even though you can't say he's not a great freestyler because he beat Meneely and alot of other really good kids in freestyle). I've been told he hasn't practiced freestyle since Junior High. If you look at the youth results from the past you'll see Brett's name on alot of Tulsa Nationals titles but none on the freestyle side. I think if he worked exclusively on freestyle he would be just as dominating in that style as he is in folk. So let's say that Brett places 4th or higher at Senior Nationals this year? I think that would be enough to put the exclamation on the career.

Total package

by D-MAN (no login)

H.B you just shot your self in the foot. Vering won all 3 styles while in HIGH school. If someone concentrates and competes in mainly one style they should have am advantage. Example Folkstle Allgood, Greceo, Miller Freestyle, Hayak. All geat wrestlers in thier own styles. To seperate them compare them to Vering He won all stlyes while in HIGH school. Not in the little kids program and not in college but HIGH school. Then look where he started and all three other champions started. They were @ 103 where boys wrestle boys. Vering started as a boy wrestling the men. As far as the others mentioned earlier they are all geat wrestlers. Vering won ALL three stlyes, only one guy from NE has been able to do that, it should be enough put him at the number one spot. Vering was and is the best so far

Ever seen Allgood wrestle freestyle?

by HB (no login)

Know who his losses are to in Fargo the last 2 years? As for the Vering wrestling older guys..true it's harder to come in at a heavier weight as a freshman. No doubt about it. But Allgood's freshman year he had to deal with Eric Brand of Logan View and Heath McKim of Valley who were Jr's at the time. I believe with your reasoning, you could also make the the case that Howells didn't see near the level of competition that the Bennington schedule provides. Could Vering have beaten Ben Perkins like Allgood beat Meneely when Vering was a sophomore or junior? I know Vering beat Datrick Orr of Flanagan his freshman year-who were some of his other big wins against in high school scholastic competition? This whole thing is so subjective but I'll stick with Allgood as the best that's ever stepped on the mat here in Nebraska. His accomplishments are so overwhelming and he's been so dominating for 4 years that it's sort of difficult to put it all in perspective when his career is just now winding down. By the way, he does have a few more opportunties-senior nationals and Fargo. So don't count him out yet.

by D-MAN (no login)

Don't get me wrong, Allgood will be considered the best by many people. BUT, he didn't win in Fargo ( It doesn't matter who he lost to). IF, he had maybe then I would agree he is the best, BUT until he does you shouldn't put him at the top of the high horse. I don't know if Vering could have beaten Perkin's. Do you have any facts to say he wouldn't have? About the schedules, many people on this forum think D and C are weak anyway. That is why in order to get a fair comparison, the national meets must be included. It does not matter what class you are in there. My piont is Vering won them. I hope all the Nebraska guys do well at the nationals this year, it gives the next kids coming up something to talk about and take aim at. We will never agree who is the best, but we agree on this, we have great ones to talk about!

Allgood's career isn't over

by HB (no login)

If he wrestles in Fargo this year he still has has a shot. Plus he can place at senior nationals which Vering didn't compete. It's not that Class C and D are weak-but if you look at the Howells schedule they tend to wrestle alot of the same teams over again. Hopefully the trend towards teams really opening up their schedules and going after all the top rated teams will continue in this state. If you look over Allgood's career he was wrestling rated kids every single week. Just this year alone he's knocked off #1 and #2 in A, Cox, Mueller, Nelson, Simpson, Hospodka, Pickett.

by D-MAN (no login)

Yes, he still has several chances to prove without a doubt, I hope he does. Just don't be so quick to put him above someone who already has! I can't argue with who he has beaten , he has beaten the best. But he hasn't beaten them all, yet! After his last tourney maybe he will have.

Vering and Perkins Battle

by Anonymous (no login)

D-Man
good thoughts Brad Vering and Ben Perkins amy have been the championship match in fargo had Ben made weight the second day, Both were distroying the competition on both sides of the bracket. Ben and Brad had some great battles in training camp just prior to the big tournament . So I am sure had the scales cooperated It would have been on great battle

I have wrestled with both of them and I can tell you that Perkins did not have half the guts that Vering had. Both wrestled for big tweleve schools Brad at Nebraska and Ben at Iowa State, but only one has hardware. That should put an end to that discussion

We are talking high school wrestling not freestyle, greco, or college but high school wrestling. If you talk freestyle or greco then no Allgood is not the best.

Dont discredit smaller wrestlers by saying they are not as good. I have seen some upper weights weaker that 103. When you get to the top there are enough Juniors and Seniors at 103. Remember Allgoods freshman year beat a 2 time state finalist by pin and was up by about 12 points when he pinned him. Allgood moved up a weight class and beat 2 time state champ McKim. Obviously these guys are not freshman and I am sure there are more that I do not know of. If you want to use the size excuse then I can ruffle a few class d feathers and argue Verings strength of schedule. The Howells Inv or Clearwater Inv are nothing compared to the Boystown Inv and Elkhorn Inv. I have seen them both wrestle and Allgood just dominates his opponents more than anyone else I have ever seen.

Dont get me wrong I believe Vering is one of the best high school wrestlers of all time just not number 1. Although there is no question that he is the best college wrestler to ever come out of Nebraska.

I went back and read my post, and I don't see any excuses in it. During his high school career Vering won the national tourneys, Allgood has not, no excuses. The class thing doesn't matter. I can see both sides to who is the best, I'm not sure you can. They both are great. I always hear "let's settle it on the mat". Maybe we could get Vering and Allgood together and have a wrestle off!!!! Before you jump all over that ,it was just for joke.

1. Vering

Great Wrestlers

in the early eighties you have to mention the Mejia Brothers from Gering. and what about the two boys who wrestled for GINW Lieman and Eberhardt both of them were two time runner-ups and two time champs. Then from Central City Dale Brochmeier oh yea and the best wrestling name I can remember and that is Rocky DocWeilier (spelling). Lots of good wrestlers come back to my memory, Sheretz, Parker, Woods, Roberts, Tickle. It sure is fun remembering those guys.

This tournament will draw a few, very few good wrestlers. Homlgren at 171 should have a tough match or two. Tanner Kezar? Trent Kling? alliance Jv shouldn't be looked passed. That team has smaller numbers than usual, but still good quality that can compete at the varsity level.

Smith has wrestled either 140 or 145 all season long. Yes we are trying to earn as many team points as possible but we are also trying to build up our program. We had a tourney on Saturday and Smith bumped up to 145 to wrestle Schmitz of Sutherland. As far as Ord blowing us away, they should you are a High Class C School and we are a low D school. Smith has bumped around all year to face different competition, so before you go blowing your horn let things settle where they may.

Papio duals- running scared?

by Track shoes (no login)

Why won't anyone that was at the papio duals post the dual results for all of them. I heard today, remember could be a rumor, that there weren't that many good match ups because coach were moving kids around so that records wouldn't get hurt before districts. I would hope that the only moving would be done to help the team win not run from one another. Again it was probably just a rumor. It is strange that no one will post all of the dual results for that day. Anyone?

State Records

by grapplinman (no login)

I have been keeping the state records now for the past 15 years. I keep the records for the state and for the NSWCA. We used to keep the state record for Pin time, and it used to be in the state program. However, we were at an end to improving on the record, and we were getting stacked up with numbers of wrestlers with the same time, so we decided to discontinue it.

Suffice to say that we have MANY that have registered 4 second falls (as hard as that is to believe) and we even have a three second pin in the books. Three seconds would tie the National Record, but we don't have the official paperwork on it to satisfy the National Officials (it was quite some time ago). According to the National Federation, it is impossible to get a faster pin than 3 seconds because there is NO such thing as a touch fall in folkstyle wrestling.

The state of Nebraska does not keep fastest pin records for any part of the state tournament. You would have to sort through all the past tournament brackets to find this info. Some of the records past 30 years or so ago are sketchy, so nobody may ever know the real "fastest" time.

I hope this satisfies your question.

The Raidas

by HB (no login)

103 in D is fairly weak-Mortensen will place. Neff has met every challenge he has faced this year. Taper won't be beat at 145 because all the really good kids are at 140. Welch is wrestling tough right now and could be as underrated as anyone in the state. Isaac Mortensen should score some points at 125. Their 130 and 135's could score some points along with their heavyweight. They put together nearly a full team which in class D is hard to do. They could have at least 2 state champs and several other placers. Although this week they'll probably be dropped down a notch because Newman Grove is really putting on a late season run. I'm not so sure that Amherst or Rushville have much on Newman Grove right now.

Bust out the cameras this week....NWI's first reader contest

by (no login)

This week is being called "R & R" week in the NWI offices.

R & R, in this case, stands for Rest and Regeneration. We'll be staying close to home this week as we get ready for the two biggest weekends in wrestling here in Nebraska - districts and state.

I'll be at the Skutt-LC dual Thursday and the EMC tournament on Saturday, but other than that the camera's going to take a break this week. And that's where you come in.

Wherever you might be this week, take the camera with you and shoot some photos. Send your best to us and we'll use them in next week's edition of the magazine.

Our cracked staff will take a look at the photos and pick out our best photo for the NWI R&R Weekend Award. The winner's photo will grace the cover of next week's edition and the winner will snag themselves an NWI T-Shirt. We thought about giving away a cash prize or a trip to the D-1 finals, but the rent also has to be paid, unfortunately.

So when you're out and about this week, grab the camera and get some shots. Best photo graces next week's cover, you get a T-shirt and bragging rights for the week of districts.

Here's what I NEED from you to enter the contest:

* Attached photos MUST BE .jpg or .tif format.
* Deadline for photos is Tuesday, 2-5 at noon.
* E-mail photos to mikeyc@nwimag.com.

In the body of your e-mail, include the following:

* Your name and hometown
* What dual/tournament you shot the photos at
* Who the individuals are in the photo (weight optional)

Because of time frame involved in publication schedules, print photos that must be scanned by NWI will not be eligible. Print photos that you scan and e-mail are eligible.

referee complaints

by bdoggy (no login)

I've seen a lot of complaints about referees on the board lately.
One aspect that I'd like to comment on is on out of bounds calls. This seems to be where we get the most groans from the crowd but where the ref's are usually correct. Both supporting points of 'one' wrestler must be inbounds.
Fans and parents need to understand that if only one toe of each wrestler is on the line they are OOB

Some results

by L Schwartz (no login)

I was at the tournament and i happened to see a couple of brackets. I know Jay Sherer got first, Big Surprise!

I also got first. Here are the results from my bracket.

Luke Schwartz Pin (logan-magnolia) 4:02
Fullton(waverly) D. (logan magnolia) 5-4
Luke Schwartz D. Fullton(waverly) 13-7

One bracket above me was a pretty tough bracket, It had Joe Libal from Cozad(who is quite good), Micah Laughenburg(bjsa) and another wrestler(not sure of his name). Joe Libal took first. Micah Laughenburg 2nd. And the other wrestler third.

Joe Libal D. Micah Laughenburg 11-7
Joe Libal Pin name??????????
Micah Laughenburg Pin name??????????

Im not sure about many of the other brackets.

Good job

by (no login)

Luke. We watched you wrestle in Omaha and were impressed. What are you weighing now? Anyone else from Stanton go down to Seward? We watched Libal for first time this year on Saturday in Milford, he is excellent also. Good luck the rest of the year. Maybe you should consider the application for MSDuals on Huskerland website.

Re: Good job

by L Schwartz (no login)

Thanks for the compliment. I am weighing about 147 right now. No one came along to seward with me from stanton this weekend. I am planning on trying a spot for the MSDuals at 140 pounds. I made it down to 141 at Papio-Lavista but was very weak the day of the tournament. I think i will be better off taking if off with hard work in the wrestling room.

Before you decide

by TK (no login)

to automatically lose weight consider that there are other weight brackets, such as 145, 152 for middle school duals team. You may be stronger at higher weight and just as quick. Ask your top flight coach for advice and also parental approval.

Considered

by L Schwartz (no login)

I have already considered that but i would be cutting almost all fat to get to 140. If i do it slowly and with hardwork i think i will make it. If i can't make it then i will probably try for 145 pounds.

Re: Considered

by Lance Stallion (no login)

Top flight? Thanks TK...oh wait, you weren't talking about me...

Personally I feel Luke should wrestle and not worry about cutting. I would sooner have him working on conditioning and technique and not worrying about weight loss at this time. Actually I feel its better if he wrestles up right now because those guys will be stronger than him, and next year when he is in high school he will have to get used to wrestling stronger guys anyway.

Yes I

by TK (no login)

was. Luke wrestled quite well in Omaha although he didn't place as well as he wanted. He was impressive regardless. It wasn't his lack of wrestling skill that kept him from placing higher, likely the weight cutting, lack of strength and training time. He'll get more time on the mat soon, following state high school tourney, right? He didn't really look like he was packing a lot of body fat anyway. The only kids getting a lot of mat time this time of year are either practicing with high school teams or are in season in the metro area. He wants to try to make the Middle School duals team I think but he has time to get into condition and strength at 145-150 more than likely, when he does, the metro competition will have their hands full.

District match-ups

by rmh (no login)

I have been reading all the posts on the best district match-ups. Too bad we cant find a way to be in 16 places at once. Or get real creative and make digital recordings of each district and post them on the web for everyone else to see. This would then be the Ultimate #1 Best all time wrestling site!!! (as if it isn't already!)

Won't get to all 16....but will do my best to try

by (no login)

Right now, I have it worked out where I can hit at least 8 districts and as many as 10 in two days. There are 5 districts that I know I won't be able to hit, but have people at 3 of the sites who can send photos to me. There are two that I know I don't have anybody RIGHT NOW who can help, but would appreciate any help there.

Here's what I know right now as far as getting pictures of all 16 districts is concerned.....

Class A - Have a friend who can hit districts in Fremont, Millard South and Lincoln East. Need some help on the Scottsbluff district.

Class B - I'll hit Norris, Boys Town and York for sure. Depending on how Saturday goes, I might be able to sneak Lexington in, but need to be in Kearney for the UNO-UNK dual Saturday night.

Class C - I'll hit Malcolm and I have connections for Stanton and possibly Ainsworth. St. Paul's up in the air right now, but may have that nailed soon.

Class D - Will hit Louisville and probably Amherst. Randolph is covered. Need help with Sutherland.

If anyone can help out with the districts I need, please e-mail me at the address above and I'll give you the lowdown on how I'll need the photos sent. Because of the time frame involved (the state tournament issue will be out a day early), all images will have to be sent via e-mail.

Most anticipated district matches?

by HB (no login)

Wood vs Augustyn C-4
May vs Breitkruetz C-4
True vs Kinnan B-4
Schmidt vs Millard B-3
Blickenstaff vs Klingelhoefer D-3

At least in my opinion the best matches will be taking place out west. I dunno what it is with Chase County vs Ord-if you add in Arterburn vs Trampe you have a red hot rivalry between two teams that don't look like they like each other too much.

C-2

by Lance Stallion (no login)

Ones that should be good out of C-2 at Stanton:
103--McCart/Gaines/Brandl/Smith

130--Unger/Hoier rematch.

135--Johnson/Schomer--I think the only time they wrestled this year was at Stanton Invite and Johnson won 3-2.

There will be some huge scrambles for medallists. Several of these brackets, 152 and 160 come to mind, have had some major upsets in the past two weeks. Its just about anybody's guess who will qualify at this point.

SC vs LC

by Anonymous (no login)

It's too bad these teams did not wrestle 3 years ago when Skutt was really loaded with their best talent. These past two years Lewis Central has had their best teams ever so they've picked up the big wins. Three years ago it would have been a different story. None the less this dual is great for wrestling in this area and I hope the local media has enough sense to cover it instead some girls BB game that has about 40 people in the stands. Thursday night will be HS athletics at it's finest!!!!
