We don't belong to any 'clan.' We are Lowland Scots (and proud of it!) and were never part of the Gaelic speaking Highland clan system. A lot of people think that everyone in Scotland must belong to a clan and have a tartan, however much of this myth was created in Victorian times. The earliest written origins of the name are based around Edinburgh and the Lothians, still a stronghold of the surname to this day.
