Stefan,
although I usually take particular care of water dios (because I like them), I can´t recall to have seen one before that is SO realistic like yours ! I already liked the WIP pics of your painting the wet effect on the LVT, but now in the dio it´s nothing but stunning ! I too hope to hear a detailed explanation how you did it !
Cheers,

Amazing!

Hello,
First my congratulations! As stated by others it is the most amazing water I had seen.
Like the others, I have to ask you how you did it. The bubbling effect of the waves is really awesome. A complete and detailed explanation is required! ))
Best regards,
Luis Alho

Action dios are hard to pull off. Water dios are hard to pull off. Action + Water dios, I've never seen it done really really well until now! Great stuff Stefan. The foamy wake is just superb!

Brilliant work!

That water is so masterfully done, it is obviously the result of painstaking observation and re-creation. Sign me up too for the water modelling course, if ever you think of starting one. Just superb.

Completely real

Fan-bloody-tastic. Simply the most convincing water effect I have ever seen, bar none. Please tell us how you did it Stefan, I've got to know!

first of all THANKS for the positive feedback to everybody.
And now a How-to for the water:
1) The base of the water is plaster. The waves were formed by putting a transparent kitchen foil onto the wet plaster and pushing it in with the fingers. When dry the base was painted with acrylics (dark blue, light blue and white).
2) The dark blue part of the water got 5 thick layers of gloss acrylic medium to achieve a impression of depth. Some wave tops were highlighted with gloss medium plus a little white. I kept this very subtle in order to get a stark contrast to the splashes of the LVT.
3) The splashwater section (base colors white and light blue) got 2 layers of gloss acrylic medium as a start.
Then I took kitchen sponges which have a rough side which is white. This white stuff was torn apart and ruffled up. Next I superglued this to the appropriate places and brushed it with acrylic gloss gel.
4) The white foam is a mix of talcum powder, acrylic flat medium and a little white paint. This needs two stages, one which is rather transparent as a base and a thicker one for the heavy foam layers.
Just to clarify: acrylic medium has about the consistency of honey and is used to make acrylics more transparent without thinning them (sold in bottles). Acrylic gel is like tooth paste and comes in jars or tubes. A well known brand is Impasto gel from Lascaux.

Brilliant

I have to agree with my colleagues above. This is one of the best "in action" vignettes I have ever seen. The water motion and waves are absolutely stunning.
As others have said, this is the best water I've ever seen. And your method seems so easy compared to all the messy epoxy, resin and whatever bad stuff people normally use.

some in progress pics for clarification

Thanks again gentlemen!
I got some email replys with questions about the water method. My words apparently didn`t make too much sense in english. Therefore I try it now with some in progress pics (sorry for the poor quality of them).
On the first you see the LVT embedded in the plaster, which has been primed with
dark blue. The second pic shows the base colors of the waves and splash water painted in. I did those with artist oils but regreted this soon after since it took over a week to dry. The last two show the torn apart/ teased out/ plucked apart kitchen rubbing glued in place. After that the next step was to brush acrylic gel onto the white stuff. This gives it a transparent body when dry. It took several passes to cover each and everyone of the white threads.
I hope this makes things a bit more clear.

overwhelming respons
October 19 2005, 12:15 PM
Hi everybody
I am totally overwhelmed by the respons to my dio. Thanks to everybody for their feedback!!! I just hope that you guys find the right kind of kitchen sponge in your area otherwise I will probably get another wave of emails
...would work with a "green" kitchen sponge?
Stefan, you have really raised the bar with this one, as has been said by so many this is the best water dio I have ever seen!
Thank you for sharing your tricks and tips with us, you have given me enough confidence to try this out.
