Hi guys,

I just couldn't resist. It has been a long while since I did a kit bash and this was the perfect subject. However, look at this model the same way you view a movie that says "based upon a true story".

I am not attempting to exactly replicate the one seen in the recent photos, just close enough to be an enjoyable project for me. I intentionally used kits from my stash, which meant the Ausf J vs. the earlier mark. I added Aber fenders (I really need to learn to solder!) and the gun is Dragon's Flak 37 OOB (great BTW).

The upper mount is pure guess work even after reading the new Trojca Flak 88mm book with plans of this vehicle. It is only mocked up at this stage and I will be making adjustments and fine tuning it as I go.

Any thoughts as to what details might be present or exposed on the inside of the rear engine bulkhead would be great. I was thinking that maybe some weld marks from removed fixtures?? I don't have any pics of the inside upper walls of a Pzr IV, so any help is much appreciated. I might just go with new armor plate in the end though.

Still a long way from the end . . .

Best,

Mike

Some points

April 25 2007, 8:37 AM

Dear friend.

First all, is fantastic to see that you will make this version. Since the frist time that Jindra showed me that photo, I falled in love for this, so...now I am very happy that you will make it.

I read your comments about your creation, but....even respecting that, I would like to share my thoughts about this version. just my opinion....

I ahven't see pictures of the interior, but...seems logic that this 88 was placed over the floor in the PzIV and not over a new platamoform, because this seems more complicated. maybe they just needed a mobil plattaform (the PZIV base). Maybe they fixed the gun support over any metal estructure over the fuel compartment.
The reason why I think that is because I cannot see clearly any horizontal structure like the one that you made, because there aren't any stuff over it, and seem that the SOLDIER's boots are under the hull level, not over.

To me seems that the germans just took a old PzIV hull without upper estructure and placed the 88.I don't think that they added the hatches, because is defintily not useful in this case.

Following the PzIV theory, the fenders is worng too, because in the PzIV , the fenders follow the upper estructure shape, is not a whole piece like the ABER PE (the old ones)

Of course...as you say, it is your own interpretation, but you have the extra risk that not always you will be able to explain your idea with words like in this forum. if some one see just a photo of your model , or in any show or contest, can find the same conclusions than me and could be a very polemic model. So...this is why I think that each model, even if is just our own interpretation, must be based in logic points, or easy to understand by almost all of modellers.

Now, in another hand...if you real wish is simply the idea, because you don 't want to make a boring interior or you want save money, the soluction that you propose in this model seems smart.
Like small recomendation, I suggest you make and paint the horizontal metal estructure like a big piece of steel that the germans took from any close factory. if you paint the PzIV in dark yellow 8example) could be a nice contrast to paint the metal plattaform in any civil color (light blue, industrial green (I have a phot of this for you)...but very rusted and dirty.)
Even you can add some civil letters to desribe the origen of the metal part. COuld be very fun, specially if you try to enjoy with the paint.
because this is a kind of experiment for you, try to make something extremly original.

Also, i will try to find info or photos of the pzIV wall. This must be the original one without doubt!!!!

Anyway this is my personal opinion and a postive critic from your number one fan.
Of course, I haven't doubt that this models will be one of your best!!

Sincerily

MIG

I agree

April 25 2007, 11:21 AM

I agree exactly on what Mig wrote. I sent you one more additional photo and there is one clear thing - parts of the interior (ex-ammo boxes?) create on the right side "wall", so the parts of interior still were on place. Also you should change type of rollers (should be rubber band).
Anyway I realy admire your will to build such unusual type an of course your top skills. Especially with such type of vehicles it is very unrewarding job, because always somebody can find new photo, which brings your work to the beginning.

88mm Flak on Pz IV

August 6 2009, 2:58 PM

Hello Jindra,

I am modeller with focus on German Flak and German halftracks and found the very interesting article of Mike Rinaldi on his project in MMIR no 45.
With respect to my InterNet search for pictures of the real thing I only found the two pictures presented by Mike in his Missing Lynx letter.
I will also buy the new Trojca issue vol 2 on German Flak referenced in Mikes article but I have read in some post at ML, that you might have one or two additional pictures.
So, is it possible to send them to me via mail? I know that many "collectors" will not share their treasures, but I will promise to keep that info for my own if you want that.

Any reply would be very nice.
Best wishes
Gert

Thanks for the responses

April 25 2007, 1:20 PM

Hi guys -

Well, like I said in my post I was not trying to replicate the tank in the photo exactly. It is clearly an Ausf G and I did not want to cut up the new Dragon kit for this project, thus I used the J model that I had on hand. That is why I mentioned inspired by . . .

I have been studying the available photos for weeks and was trying to decide which way to go with the exposed interior. I had noticed the soldiers foot below the top edge and the front hatches are not visible. However, without a clear top down photo I was not confident enough to replicate the missing areas with any certainty. So that is why I decided to take an easier route and just have some fun and not be too historically accurate. Call it a "what if" if that helps.

Something tells me there is probably some more photos of this tank out there somewhere that need to be discovered, and with my luck they will surface after the model is completed.

I only wanted a unique subject and one that will be fun to paint. I was actually a little afraid to post this as is, because I know how you guys are. I know the model isn't matching the photos, but hopefully is still along the lines of being believable, I think.

Best,

Mike

We know that....

April 25 2007, 2:29 PM

...please, don't worry, don't worry, we know what exactly you wanted with this model and I think that all of us understood very well, and we respect. And of course, the model will be same good that if you choose the difficult route.

No problem.
In fact, I gave you some advices for your easy interpretation, so, don't worry please.

I understand very well that you just want fun and make something fresh and original, and this is the most important.

No....No more "f...g" excuses and go for the paint. Or...do you think that I can wait a day more to see that model without paint????

Go, Go, Go and enjoy!

MIG

Finally, somebody stopped talking and built it!

April 29 2007, 1:56 AM

I think everbody was a little too scared to build that thing, congradulations. It looks really good. One thing I just noticed is that in the picture with the GI it looks like his legs are a little too short, maybe the gun deck was sunken down or something. That is a lot of extra room where the fighting compartment should be, it could have been ammo storage or something underneath. Wild guesses are about all you have to work with I suppose! Looks nice though.
