Few nationalist's from the Balkans and few pacifists from the rest of the world! Spare us of your objective comments, just because you havent been there when all the shitt hapened! Something's going on here between serbs and albanians, albanians and macedonians, serbs and croats and all that happened has it's reasons. But those reasons are few centuries old and the only way to solve the situation is to give everybody what they want. Ex Yugoslavia was some sort of model for modern EU, free country whose passport worth more then american in that time (with Yug passport you could go both to USA or USSR without a problem. But (always but) that country had it's own bugg inside, it was artificial country created to satisfy few centuries old serbian desire (all serbs to live in one country). Albanians now play they role in the whole story, to permanently destabilize the Balkans (and finally the EU) so the U.S. could keep their presence in the area. So I'm giving them an advice not to hope that the independence will be given to them soon! There are some more important things for uncle Sam then to think about some small European people's destiny!!!

Yugoslavia was as artificial as the USA or Great Britain. Its problem was that it was not surrounded by water and was run by non-servile men. Perhaps it was run by stupid men, take your pick. That's why it was attacked by the Germans, in alliance to the rest of Europe, in 1941, in 1991, and in 1999. Without counting 1915.

What's wrong about wanting your nation under one flag, if your compatriots are being oppressed, crushed, exterminated across the river? If your neighbors are unable to respect their minorities, you have the right to cross the river and fix the problem. Especially if the neighbors are already bombing your territory.

Anyway, Yugoslavia was wanted by Slovenians and Croats in 1918. Slovenia and the Slovenian language would not exixt today if the Serb army had not arrived. Croatia would be a landlocked country without the Serb Army.

Yes, they did want liberation from Austrians, since they have been under them for nearly a thousand years. But, they didnt want Yugoslavia the way it was created. Just to remind you, after the break of Thessaloniki front in Greece in WWI serbian army defeated Bulgaria and continued to move towards Belgrade and Vojvodina, and then moved to Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenija. In the meantime, Austrian empire signed the truce and Croats and Slovenians rushed to declare indipendence. In october 1918. they declared The Indipendent State of Slovenians, Croats and Serbs, which had nothing to do with later Kingdom of Serbs, Croats adn Slovenians. Their plan was to unite with Serbia as a FEDERATION! So they could, later on, separate and make their own independent countries (Like they did in 1991, croatian ex president Tudjman spoke about the "thousand years long dream" of creating independent country).
But, the IDIOT (King Alexander the First) wanted all for himself, all the power all teritories so he made, without acceptance of croats and slovenians an unitary state. That had only accelerated the death of first YU. Croats have wanted its death ever since.
Remember, croats (but not slovenians) were in wwII on nazi-side. They were even worse in crimes. The worst (and the only) konz-camps were their. After the war all of that was covered up fast by comunists (fuckn fraternity-unity) and still no one really knows what happened there.
Also Kosovo albanians (BALLI KOMBETAR) or bosnian muslims (Skender division). All of them considered Yugoslavia as a hutch.
After the war was the same. Find something about MASPOK movement in 1971.

The tiny minority of crazies in Croatia would have never succeeded in breaking up the country without heavy financing from the Axis and from NATO countries. Mussolini killed the King, and Hitler finished the job in 1941. Kohl and Dole did the same in 1991.

Still in 1991, there were majorities in all Yugoslav states --except for the Kosovo province--supporting Yugoslavia. It was the U.S. Congress, because of the leadership of Dole, that blocked federal elections and forced local elections, which naturally brought to power greedy local lords like Tudjman and Izetbegovic.

Yes, I am a serb! But I still think that creating Yugoslavia was the biggest mistake in whole serbian history (Idiot of king Alexander I). At the time of the end of WWI, Serbia was at the top of it's power, and could practicaly "draw" it's border in the Balkans. My opinion is that they had to take only those teritories in which serbs lived then. Instead, they made a weak country who could exist 'till the first breakdown, as it was in 1941. Just imagine where would we be today if that was so! Also, there is a less-known reference that the Idiot relayed all serbian high officers who fougt in WWI, cause he considered them as an oposition to his rule, and than brought Croats and Slovenians who served in hostile army (austro-hungarian). That rusted the country even more.

Speaking about majority of people who wanted the survival of Yugoslavia, remember, Nazi troops were met with flowers in Zagreb and Ljubljana in 1941!

About foreign factor in Balkan crisis, I think that it's not mine to explain you how do things work in the USA. The side who gives more money gets everything. You just need to buy few senators and/or State Secretary. Croats,Albo's & the others were giving (and still give) a lott, and our stupid guys gave nothing. End of story! As far as europeans are concerned, I think they were too weak at the time the crisis begun, and now it is too late to change things the way they would like. Pretty inconvenient, dont you think?


Soviet interest was to unstabilize Yugoslavia so they could rule. American was to unstabilize Yugoslavia, warm up nationalism and make a war, so they could control the area. European is to stabilize the situation and integrate in itself. Who will win?

Looking from 2005, Yugoslavia may seem a bad idea. In 1918, however, it seemed a good idea to everyone, especially Slovenia and Croatia. It's true, Serbia had then the opportunity to determine its own borders, which would have naturally included Bosnia, southern Dalmatia, and the Krajnas. But the Yugoslavist idea was very powerful.

In 1990 that same option was once again available, but Serbia decided instead to bow to the desires of Kohl and Badinter. The fact that Serbia in 1990 had no leader willing to draw a line in the sand is not the fault of King Alexander. The entire nation must take the blame.

The royal family had made of Yugoslavia a pretty tolerant country. The communist regime made of Yugoslavia a pretty tolerable country. Yugoslavia was certainly not perfect, but it was pretty good, after the murderous hysteria of the early postwar years.

As for the enmity of the northern Catholics, the Slovenes were loyal to the King, recognizing that the alternative was learning to speak Italian. I do not think they loved the Nazis at all. In 1945 Croats and Slovenians were all pretty nasty towards Italians and Germans who had lived there for generations and who would have been a great asset in rebuilding the country.

The Croats, in free elections, never gave more than 2% to the right wing crazies like the Frankists. You also must admit that anyone who had once experienced Austrian efficiency, and had then been subjected to Serbian bureaucracy for 20 years, could be expected to be glad to see the Krauts back.

In the 90's Serbia had no publicists in the West, and that gave Dole a free hand. Hiring publicists is even more important than paying politicians. It was open season on Serbs, literally in Yugoslavia, figuratively in the Western press, because no one spoke for Serbia.
