Turning administrative borders into international (countries) borders principle is better then a perfect border redraw?
If South Ossetia can separate from Georgia why not North of Kosovo?
Does this end here? What about Krajina, Slovania, Srbska Republik, West of Macedonia, Presevo Valley, etc, etc.
Can South Ossetia help to create natural Serbia, Croatia, Albania, and Bulgaria?

Self-determination brings peace?..

August 21 2008, 5:21 AM

Matt's ideal world consists of million of small states self-determined on national base...
I live in multi-national country and I can't accept this sceme..
Besides, I'm sure even in such utopical world wars will be commonplace

Nonsense. When an empire is good for its nations, they do not want to leave.

Did the nations of the USSR yearn for independence? No.
Did the nations of Yugoslavia struggle for independence? No.

The West financed the secessionists, created terrorist groups. Once the process starts, it's best to solve it by partition and self-determination. Belgrade proposed partition. It was blocked by Washington, which always prefers war.

Delf-determination

August 21 2008, 9:30 AM

No! That's not a normal position!
What do you mean,"if the process is stsrted"? Our enemies always start some processes, aimed to distroy us. If we will change our oppinions according to their activities - what will be with us?

Chechen war - is a project of Pentagon. If goverment and people acted according to your words - the republic should be deffinitly separated from Russian federation. As many Chechen people really wanted it during several years. But it is very difficult to get real people's oppinion ( as there are always 2 opposities views) and it is very difficult to act under permanent changings of these oppinions.
There has to be something stable, immortal in a state's system. Forexample - constitution. Or any idea. Having such a thing people feel themselves more comfortable living in a currant state.
One of such issues - territory unity.

And by the way small peoples in empire, even beeing happy, earlier or later actually always claim for independence...

Self-determination

August 22 2008, 8:17 AM

Albanians in Kosovo want to be independent? Could have given them half of it, with the main population centers.

Croats want independence? Give them 2/3.

Chechnya, I understand, is now essentially independent.

As you can read it clear, from 7 countries scattered in 10 pieces I created only 4 natural countries Serbia, Croatia, Albania, and Bulgaria plus mini-me Montenegro. This is self-determination. And here I disagree with Matt, about Beograd proposed partition. This is not true. There were some underdog voices who like me and you want to participate in peace. But bullies in Beograd didn’t accept it. They had all legal rights and power to solve this problem even when Yugoslavia was under brotherhood utopia. It started on Kosovo and will end in Kosovo this kind of utopia. If a nation don’t want to live with you, better let it go when you are still friend because that friendship and brotherhood ends up in war.
In 1937, Čubrilović wrote his "The Expulsion of the Albanians" memorandum, which he hoped would solve their Albanian problem once in for all. Having failed to colonize Kosovo, Čubrilović urges the Serbian government to do whatever it could to remove as many as 200,000 Albanians from Kosovo and have Serbs and Montenegrins take over their property. In 1937, he saw it as politically feasible: "If Germany can evict hundreds of thousands of Jews, if Russia can transport millions of people from one part of the continent to another, a few hundred thousand evicted Albanians will not provoke a world war."
What goes around comes around. Operation “storm” is our victimization and martyrdom and Croatia’s shame and crime, ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and Srebrenica is Serbia’s shame and crime.

Non-patriots or self-haters?

August 22 2008, 8:10 AM

I always like non-patriots. I like them, they are reasonable, just as patriots are normally, naturally stupid and self-destructive. Then there is a point when non-patriots become self-haters, and thus losers.

They even accept and internalize enemy propaganda. I saw it in Belgrade liberals: they believe NATO fabrications about ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

They even deny that Cosic and even Milosevic agreed to partition, vetoed by Washington war makers, and then they trot out poor Cubrilovic. Serbs could have done it, and it could have done it and remained sovereign in a loose alliance with Hitler, like the other Balkan countries. But they did not do it, and should be honored for that.

The Greeks did it, 1944. The Croats did it, 1941, 1945, 1995. The Turks did it. The Bulgarians did it. They all kicked out their minorities and are praised as democrats. And now these Serbs pull out their handkerchiefs and start sobbing "We were thinking about doing it, please punish us!"

United Nations - The name said all. Balkans Nations that’s my dream. Am I non-patriot or self hater? NO.
Muslims in Bosnia have no reason to be nation because there is no such based on religion. Have them choose to be in Croatia or Serbia nation and build the Balkan nations based on nationality. Minorities will exist and I have no doubt about it. But when you can have a continuous territories populated by a nation, which cannot make you God to kick them out of their home if they don’t want to be governed by you. Often people intentionally of not, confuse the emigration of individuals in North America or anywhere with continuously territories inhabited by nations for centuries. Even majority of those territories have change by time that cannot make government of any nation to kick people out of their home if they have “moved” the ethnic borders by time. We are in 21st century and cannot go back neither in 7th century as some closed minded Albanians nationalist pretend nor on 14th century when Serbia Empire’s borders where somewhere to include even Epirus. I am realistic person and disagree with both of them.
Whatever you mention for Croats and operation “Storm” is true and disgrace of their nationalist criminals. The crime cannot be justified with another crime.

Patriots

August 22 2008, 7:07 PM

They are, by definition, stupidly following instinct that was essential to survival when we were head hunters, trying to wipe out the evil neighbors. We all are here just because our forefathers killed out the neighbors, instead of being killed.

We do not need such instinct any more. Being willing to go to war and wipe out the neighbors because the king or president of my father wants it, that's patriotism. The word comes from the Latin pater, patris--father.

Nationalism on the other hand is not-blood related. When in Belgrade under the bombs, or in Orahovac or in North Mitrovica, I was a Serb nationalist. In Ossetia under Georgia-NATO bombs, I would be an Ossetian nationalist.
