U.S. Registration for Diesel 4-Runner

Need help! Own a cherry '96 4-Runner, diesel, 5-speed purchased and located in Panama. Would like to ship to the U.S. and use here. Can anyone tell me if I will be able to register this vehicle in CA or NV? I know the vehicle was sold new in Canada and Mexico, but not dealer-sold in the U.S. Many thanks for sound advice!
