Protection Question

I recently purchased an 89 4Runner in remarkable condition- no rust, very little paint damage... The paint actually seems better than the '97 I just sold. It is a Florida vehicle and I live in the mountains of NC (lots of weather and chemicals on the road). Please send me any suggestions about protecting the vehicle from the inevitable. I have heard conflicting suggestions about rust-proofing, etc. I appreciate any help or comments on your experience here.
