4 Runner Oil usage

I have a 1993 (Australian Model) 4 Runner Limited auto with 3 Litre motor. On some days it operates quite normal on others it is sluggish and tends to blow oil smoke when loaded. Has this engine a history of wearing rings or valve guides. Any ideas? Speedo has 119000 kM about 70000 miles.
