turbo problem

by (no login)

hello peter,

I own a 1991 TS and have similar problem with the turbo cutting in and cutting out at random. When the turbo cuts out, I can feel the power loss but when I let the engine go below 1000 revs, the turbo kicks in again. I can't do this all the time, I'm sure there must be a simple solution to this problem.

Did you manage to solve your problem ? Maybe you can help me out !

Cheers.
Peter.

4Runner Engine Knocking when Accelerating

by (no login)

I own a 97 4Runner with 113K miles on it. It has been regularly maintained and has had no major problems. In the past week the engine has been knocking causing major roughness when accelerating, especially when accelerating at midrange speeds. The knocking doesn't happen when idling. Also the truck doesn't seem to have much pickup. Thereafter the Check Engine light came on and stayed on. Maybe some water in the gas? Or bad spark plugs? Or a fuel injector?
Has anyone had these similar problems?

Did you figure this out? I know what it is. I have a 00 4Runner with the same issue.
Took it to the dealer - they fixed it.
So simple I want to strangle them for not covering it under the 60mo/60K powertrain warranty

Alternator and Toyota fast moving parts catalogs

by (no login)

Hi!a friend of mine has a 1989 Toyota 2wd extended cab pickup truck (130 000 KM),auto tranny which does not have A/C nor any other goodies and alternator is bad I tried to tell him that usually all that goes wrong with them are carbon brushes but his mechanic said he needs another alternator because his mechanic had an alternator shop look at it and they wanted $100+ to fix it the would not tell the mechanic what's wrong,my friend would not listen to me,so I would like to know what other vehicles & years would have an alternator that is compatible (plug & play)so that he could buy one from a local junk yard as Toyota pickup & 4-Runner parts are extremely rare in my area.
I recall that some Toyota dealerships sell "Toyota fast moving parts catalogs" that cross references alternators among other parts these catalogs are also available on Ebay but none of which I have,I recall Paul Cherubini having such catalogs, could you Paul or anyone else tell me which other vehicles & years have a compatible alternator?.
Also does anyone have a used Toyota alternator for sale in Dartmouth/Halifax area of Nova Scotia for?.Thanks.

I am in the market to buy a 4x4 and have noticed that the Toyota Surf appears good value for money compared to other 4x4. Could someone please tell me the pros and cons for these cars. I know that to insure them is some what a problem but being in the insurance industry I know of a insurer that will insure them at a reasonable price. However when it come down to the mechancial side of things I am some what of a novace.

low idle problem

by (no login)

My 93 4Runner V6 SR5 4x4 has a low idle problem. It was idling fine at over 500-700rpm's, and just in the last couple of days it has started idling low and rough, around 325rpm. It doesn't stall out, but I'm sure that is around the corner if I don't solve this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look first?

2000 4Runner Tire Jack Contact Points

by J. Carr (no login)

Hello,

Looking for some help with my 2000 4Runner in relation to jack contact points. The jack itself shows one set of positions, and Toyota sent me a fax showing a slightly different set. For instance, I'm told that to lift the rear the jack makes contact with the rear axle. Doesn't look too secure! If anyone has experience or knowlege of this, please post.

97 4Runner stalls

by (no login)

Car sometimes stalls when idling (just after starting). Stalls when shift into drive. May stall at low speed shortly after starting. Once its going it seems to be OK. Does not happen all the time. Seems to be more likely to happen when engine warm than in morning with cold engine.

I'd appreciate any ideas?

Re: Hilux Surf suspension

by Dan (no login)

G'day,

I fitted a 130L auxilliary instead of the spare tyre on my 4Runner and had the same problem. I appraised all the options of stronger coils, higher coils etc etc and ended up going for Polyair Airbags within the existing coils for under ~$350. The stronger coils would be a pain around town and being standard height would still sag under load eventually (unless they were really rock hard), whereas the higher coils require new longer-travel shock absorbers aswell, thank you very much. The Polyairs finished up being the most affordable option, and gives you the very useful facility of adjustability.

Good luck,

Dan
