Timing Belt

by Lorne (no login)

Take it to your local dealer, they do something with the diagnostic box which cancels this alarm. They usually do it when they change the timing belt. It is also recommended that you get the timing belt changed if you haven't done so already.

Rough idling

by Lorne (no login)

My '91 V6 does the same thing. The service manager at the local Toyota workshop cannot explain it, although every time I take it in it runs perfectly ( I think he thinks I'm dreaming it or I am a nutcase or something!)
I have found that it only seems to occur after I have been driving a bit harder than normal.
We are still trying to nail it down and when we do I will post the outcome on this and other sites.

Rough Idle?

by (no login)

Hey man , hate to tell you this but mine was doing the same thing and it turned out to be the head gasket. I had the Head gasket replaced during a recall about 4 years ago @ 36,000 miles. I now have 80,600 original miles on the engine and the head gasket blew without warning(engine shut down and would not start). I went to toyota and i called Toyota NA and and told them that I only have 46,000 miles on a replaced head gasket and that it just blew. The told me basically too BAD. We replaced it once and your on your own. After some complaining to the local dealer they were able to get toyota to pay for the head gasket set($300.00)BUTT I had to pay for the labor which was roughly $1300+. They didnt know what conditions the heads were in. and it could go up to $3000.00 + . Well i made the mistake and took it to the dealer(VERY BAD IDEA!!!!) and they confirmed that there was water in the cylinders and that it would not start. Well Ive thought about this really hard and said screw it , ill do it my self . So when i went to the dealer to pick up the Truck i asked them if they could push it outside and ill tow it home . Well , now all of a sudden they tell me that the mechanic was able to drive it in and out of the shop. SO I questioned why i was told that they confirmed that it didnt start when in fact it did! ALl i got was a dumb look and a bill for $83.00 for the diagnostic which I had told them what was wrong with it in the first place. So long story short I can do it myself for under a$1000.00 and have piece of mind . STAY AWAY FROM TOYOTA DEALERS!!!!! Good Luck.

check the head gasket

by Kurt (no login)

Check the head gasket...
you may have water in the oil.
Do you smell coolant in the engine compartment?
If you have over 70000 miles and have not
had the head gasket replaced...look out!!!

3.0 Engine Rebuild Cost

by Donald Tong (no login)

I just had my 3.0 rebuilt by West L.A. Engine (800-200-3644). I just got it back yesterday so it's still being shaken down. The base cost is about $3200 installed. They don't actually rebuild your engine - they have long blocks that they've already built, then install some of the parts from your old engine (oil pump, sensors, etc.)

They provide a 48K mile/four-year warranty on the engine.

If they're not local to you, they will ship the engine whereever you want and let you do the install.

Toyoya EPC catalog anyone have it?

by (no login)

Hi! I have the old Toyota EPC (Electronics Parts Catalog) software on 2 burned CD's which a friend of mine downloaded & burned them me for from:

www.yankeetoys.org/docs.htm
www.supracentral.com/oldschool/htm/epc.htm
catalog.exist.ru/toyota

For text/site language translation software:

babelfish.altavista.com/tr
www.translate.ru/eng/srvurl.asp
http://www.tranexp.com:2000/InterTran

but that software is for around 1980-95 models which suits me fine but I noticed that there are many of the newer Toyota EPC catalogs for sale on ebay & was wondering if someone had the newer one that they could upload on some site so that I and everyone else could download. Thanks in advance.

94 factory roof rack

by (no login)

I purchased a factory roof rack for the FZJ80(4 corner posts) The mounting hardware(rivet kit) did not come with. I was able to get the M5 screws(p/n 00278-93011) and the rivet nut(p/n 00278-00931) but there must be another bolt, etc to actually drive the rivet into the roof. I am assuming the rivets can be mounted from the exterior only w/o going into the ceiling.
Anybody know the remaining toyota parts I will need to complete install.
thanks

trans dropping out of O/D

by Lorne (no login)

Check your ENGINE temp sender unit as the trans will not go into O/D if the engine is not up to operating temp. Could be while you are sitting at lights engine is cooling enough to prevent trans operating correctly, but for this it must be pretty cold where you are.

BLACK SMOKE SURF

by DAZZA (no login)

I just got back from a deisel tech., coz i had the same problem and they checked out the turbo to see it was seeping oil but that was fine. Then they suggested either the injectors needed to be reco'd or the fuel pump. But as they called their workshop for a price on the pump, which is about $3000aud, the other tech. told this guy to check out the EGR valve coz they sometimes seize up open which causes it to blow out more smoke than usual. SO they disconnected the vacuum hose and plugged it up from the EGR and the smoke has reduced by 70%. And u dont really need the EGR coz its only to burn up excess fuel while the engine is cold rather than throw it out into the exhaust. So give that a try, if not go the injectors first coz they r much cheaper than the pump!

Try replacing your injector nozzles first as this may cure problem relatively cheaply, but if not you have at least eliminated a possible future problem. It cured the problem with my 2.4 Turbo.

P.S.
Is your motor an EFI diesel or non EFI ( ie pre mid 90 are non EFI)?

Turbo Whistle is perfectly normal on the standard surfs!! It becomes more audible when the turbo comes on boost.
If you really want to appreciate the turbo get an induction kit, I’ve got one fitted to my surf and it sounds as if it will suck small children from the pavement!!

Power Steering Failure ?

by (no login)

I purchased my 4Runner used from a private party 2 months ago. I took it to a Toyota Penske Dealership and besides everything comming back worse than it originaly was, here is my main concern. After buying the car, I had the dealer give it a 27 point inspection and they found 1 cyl of the engine to be low in pressure, and a very small leak from the power steering pump seal. As the dealer was installing the new seals, they imformed me that I needed a new pump. I gave the go ahead. The dealership replaced my power steering pump, after I received my 4Runner back from them, I found that turning was noticeably more difficult. I decided to test the 4WD system off road, so I headed out of the city. While steering aggressively on the winding dirt trails, I had noticed my steering would bind while steering back and fourth very rapidly.I complained more, and they ended up replacing the pump for the second time. And it still binds. The dealer informed me that this is common with 4Runners. I live in Los Angeles and I was informed by the dealer that the power steering fluid becomes too hot during aggresssive steering which is causing my failure. The dealership also added that if I added an after market pump/cooler, and continue the aggressive steering that I'm doing while off-rading, that I would blow the power steering gear box. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

97 4-Runner clutch problem

by (no login)

Recently, the engine in the 4-runner won't even turn
over unless I pump the clutch. The ignition clicks,
but there's not other response until the clutch is
pumped. Is this a wiring problem, a clutch problem, a
starter problem, or what? I've driven Toyotas for years and never experienced a problem like this.
Thanks for any suggestions.....

Hi-Lux Surf Slow Speed Rumbling

by (no login)

I have a 92 Hilux surf, which has done 88000km, just recently it has started making a loud rumbling noise, which seems to be coming from the front end. The strange thing is it only does it when slowing down between 40 and 10 KPH (with and without using the brakes), and it is in phase with the road noise from the tyres.

Can anyone suggest any causes because I have exhausted all of my own theories to no avail?

Many Thanks,

I also have rumbling from front axle area and have checked oil, bearings, seals and brake assy to no avail. The only think I can think of is possibly inferior ( as in non-factory ) bearings? It doesn't happen in 4WD, nor when stationary with engine idling. It's driving the passenger ( missus ) crazy!! Any suggestions please - what to check next? Its a 2.4 Turbo Jap import, 1991, 125000kms, thanks folks.

Rumbling up front

by Lorne (no login)

A possible cause for this is wear in the bushing where the front drive shaft passes through the hub. There is a solid bush in there, not a bearing, and when this wears it can sometimes cause the axle to "float" in the bush. I don't know whether the bush is available separate or if you have to buy a complete hub( I hope not as they are not cheap!!). Good luck.

Surf Overheating at Idle

by (no login)

Hi, I have a 1990 2.4 Turbo Diesal Surf that is overheating when idling.
After driving for 20 mins or so if I stop at lights/traffic for a few minutes the temperature climbs toward red. As soon as I start moving the temp decreases to normal operating temp.
Yesterday I noticed that if I rev the engine to 2000rpm's when the temp begins to climb it will decrease back to normal again.
Today after driving for one hour the temp gauge did not move above normal operating temp but when I turned the car off I noticed the reservoir boiling and steam coming from it.
In the last two months I have had a new water pump and thermostat installed, and the radiator serviced.
The cooling system has been pressure tested and apparently there are no leaks or cracks.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the prob could be??
Any help is appreciated..

I would check the thermostat. my a 2.8 diesel had a worn out thermostat. Going Up-hill the temp would rise under load, going down-hill (coasting) the temp would go down. I replaced the themostat and now the temp stays the same all the time no matter what temp conditions or engine load.

Overheating

by Lorne (no login)

I had a 2.4 turbo Surf before my present V6 model. During a routine service the mechanics found my radiator overflow bottle empty, which, after an extensive examination revealed a cracked cylinder head. Apparently this is a very common fault with the 2.4 turbo diesel and the best way to rectify is by fitting a new head, NOT by trying to repair a cracked one. Hope this is of help to people.

Surf Overheating at Idle

by Randal (no login)

Your overheating problems are highly sympomatic of a problem with the radiator cooling fan clutch. The silicone fluid in these units tnds to leak out over time. The result is that the fan cannot draw enough air through the radiator when the vehicle is stationary and therefore the engine can overheat.

You can renew the silicone fluid in the fan clutch with Toyota part # 08816-10001. Get your cylinder head checked for cracks to be safe.

Cheers,
Randal.

Overheating

Hi Clyde
In the end we pulled the head off and discovered it had 6 cracks and had some water in it, and this is despite the fact that it still passed several pressure tests.
When the new head went back on the turbo and alternator both decided they didnt want to work so they had to be recond. as well.
It ran a little strangely for a while which I am assuming was just wearing it in, as it is ok now.
Total cost was about $4600. From memory about $2k of that was to renew the head. Expensive but the problem was fixed. Good Luck and let us know what you find..
Kurt

Towing - 2003 4-Runner

by Phill (no login)

Anyone know why the 2003 4-Runner, with essentially the same V-8 as the Tundra, and less weight, would only be rated to pull 5000 pounds. The Tundra is rated at 7100 pounds. It doesn't make sense to me.

I was told by a salesman

by JungleJim (no login)

that they made a mistake in the design when the placed the full size spare where they did. You can not extend the hitch far enough in, because the spare is in the way. He said that is the only reason for the 5000 lbs limit.

1989-95 4x4 suspension 3" lift & 4.88 gears for sale

by (no login)

I bought some new parts a while ago from Downey, Eastern Off-road, and Off-road Unlimited. I bought the stuff from the 1996 books and never put the stuff on my 1989 Toyota 4x4 SR5 V-6 5-speed Pickup. The stuff will also fit 4x4 Forerunners as well. It is all brand new and still in the boxes. Check the part numbers and see what fits. # 480000R89RD Rancho 3" suspension lift kit with the new 2" rear leaf springs and 1" blocks, # 48186 Rancho HD torsion bars for IFS, # 9136R Rancho RS9000 adjustable front shocks, # 9144R Rancho RS9000 adjustable rear shocks, # 9700R Rancho dual action remote compressor with dual gauges, # 41201R788 Downey 4.88 front gears, # 41201V888 Downey rear 4.88 gears, # RAN97273 Rancho stabilizer front, # 457001950 Doetsch Tech front stabilizer ( bought both front stabilizers, was not sure which I wanted to run ). Will part out. Will NOT part out parts from lift kit. Both sets of gears go together, and all RS9000 shocks go with compressor. Have pics if needed but if you have a Downey catolog the pics are in there. E-mail me at Bugnbuggy@aol.com if you have any further questions. Need to sell ASAP, tired of looking at it. Asking #1500 for all of it. I'm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
