Black Smoke - Filters, injectors or crap fuel?

by snappy (no login)

You may want to change oil and filters (oil, air and fuel) more regularly.

I've been running 2.8 4runners & hiluxes for many years in Australia and have noticed the 2.8 engines always put out black smoke anyway.

My current hilux has 200,000 Klms on the clock and I change the oil & filter every 5,000 Klms. I also change the air and fuel filter every 20,000 Klms. I don't notice too much smoke out the back. If you don't do this regularly the injectors will clag up.

I have seen alot of imported Surfs blowing out heaps of black smoke. I've been told that diesel fuel in Australia is a much lower grade compared to Japan and Europe and that modern diesel engines imported downunder don't handle the dirty fuel as well as the factory imported cars. Is this true?

2000 4Runner Tires

by (no login)

I am looking to replace the tires on my 2000 4Runner. I have the Goodyear RT's on it now. I bought the car used and it has 31K miles on it and the tires are about 3/4 worn out. I am looking for something that will have good wet traction on the road and handle sand at the beach. But will be quiet and ride well. I have been looking at ratings on a lot of differnt tires and they seem to be all over the place. Any feedback is appreciated. TIA.

Check engine light question

by (no login)

I have a '93 3.0 4-runner. The check engine light came on the other day. A day or two before that it started acting funny. It would surge when I was crusing in third or fourth gear between 1500 and 2500 rpms. Then it started acting like it wanted to stall and it had very little power. If I hammered the pedal, it would come out of it after a little while. I got looking in the engine compartment and found a big hole in a vacume(sp?) line. I replaced that part of the line and it started idling smoothly again and running better. No more wanting to stall. I pulled the efi fuse and then put it back. Check engine light went out. But my check engine light came back on today. In the book I have it gave directions on how to do the diagnostics. The problem is that it said to hook a jumper up between T and E, but there is no just T or E. It also said that the diagnostic box was by the ignition, but the one I found was on the other side of the engine compartment. Can someone tell me which spots to hook the jumper to so I can figure out what is wrong? It seems like there is a fuel problem, whether it is just a partially cloged fuel filter, or a problem with fuel injector. Please help me out. Email me at Teal97@aol.com Thanks
Jake

diesel

by (no login)

It is possible to purchase the 3.0 turbo diesel 4runner throughout most of latin america. Toyota has not starting selling their direct injection engines in latin america because of the high sulfur diesel fuel. I recently purchased a hilux with the same engine. The vehicle was assembled in argentina. In the hilux line, they are only available in brazil, argentina and peru.

Hilux 2.8 diesel swap

by snappy (no login)

Has any hilux owners swapped a 2.8D for a 3.0 TD - Prado or Surf motor.
I'm looking into swapping out my 2.8 for a Intercooled 3.0TD. Have been looking at wreckers and believe my best bet would be to buy a complete donor car for the project. I also feel that the Prado would be the best donor because the parts would be easy to obtain downunder. Maybe sounds silly but I don't want to buy a Surf or Prado because I've already owned a 4Runner a few years ago & I believe they need too much suspension mods to make them as capable off roaders as the good old front & rear leaf sprung hiluxes.

I live in Costa Rica and there is at least one hilux where the 2.8 was replaced with the 3.0 turbo (1kz) but I'm not sure how difficult it was. I purchased a 2002 hilux 3.0 turbo that was assembled in argentina. Great motor.

Clutch replacement - 91' Surf 2.4 Turbo

by (no login)

Hi,
my 91' Surf 2.4 Turbo clutch needs replacement along with the rear main seal. Rather than shelling out a small fortune looking for an imported replacement I understand that some standard Australian Hilux/4 runner flywheel and clutch combinations can be fitted without modification. I recall hearing aobut this someplace. Has anyone tried this? If so, what model Hilux/4 runner flywheel and clutch will bolt straight in?

Thanks heaps in advance,
Dave.

Usually the front one near the engine

by (no login)

Usually the newer vehicles have two oxygen sensors one located in the front near engine on the exhaust manifold or the front pipe and one near the catalytic converter, the back 02 sensor usually lasts twice as long as the front one.

In the USA as it is stated in the owner's manual under the section of "scheduled maintenance" the front o2 sensor is replaced free of charge when the vehicle reaches it's first 80 000 miles regardless of age and numebr of owners many Toy dealerships are unaware of this warranty policy or are reluctant to replace if that's the case contact the Toyota Regional Office for your state and explain your situation where they will give your local Toy dealership 48 hours to comply.
On average the oxygen sensors should be replaced every 6 years or 100 000 miles or so which ever comes first.

Symptons of a bad o2 sensor are poor gas mileage, hesistation in acceleration and worse emmissions, the 02 sensor is designed to function once the vehicle has warmed up which is about after 10 minutes where the thermostat begins to open then the vehicles ECU system enters what they call a "closed loop system" then the exhaust manifold's temperature reaches 400 degree Ferenheit (I think)that where the sensor starts to do it's job,may folks think that the o2 sensor is bad but an exhaust leak can cause excess oxygen to enter the exhaust system thereby fooling the sensor into thinking there is too much oxygen, there are other problems that could cause it to give false reading such as a vaccuum leak.

If you discover that the o2 sensor is bad and it is not under warranty then from my/others experience/research purchase an o2 sensor in the following order:

1)Toyota (NipponDenso now called Denso)
2)Denso aftermarket (Same as original but sold aftermarket)
3)NTK (oxygen sensor division of NGK)
4)Bosch

Available at:
1)www.1sttoyotaparts.com/part_number.html
(they have the lowest prices in the USA & probably the whole world)
2)www.densoaftermarket.com
3)www.ngksparkplugs.com
4)www.bosch.com

Note:Toyota has an organized numbering system which dictates that the first 5 digits of their 10 digit (5 digits-5 digits)part numbers represents the part # and the remaining 5 digits dictate country of origin, color code, trim package and so on not in that order.

NGK has a powerfull oxygen cross reference software which cross references their different part #'s into either a single, double, triple or a quad wire o2 sensors so you may find 20 or different part #'s for your 94 Landcruiser and all you have to do is plug those part #'s into:

www.1sttoyotaparts.com/part_number.html

and see which one is cheaper I think you will find one for as low as $60.The NGK cross reference software is:

home.att.net/~ngksparkplugs/wsb/html/view.cgi-home.html-.html

o2 sensors

by (no login)

normally the diagnostic code for the o2 sensors is 21, which signals a break in current continuity from the front two oxygen sensors, located on the first catalitic converter. You can see these by following the exaust as it first exits the engine, and locate the two o2 sensors that feed into the top of the converter. a code of 28 suggests that the second oxygen sensor, located after the first two, needs to be inspected, cleaned, or replaced.

check engine light reset for RAV4

by (no login)

A few days ago the check engine light came on in my new RAV4. I had just gotten a tank of gas that morning, so pulled over and checked the gas cap. Sure enough, the attendant had not tightened the cap properly. The dealership tells me the light can only be reset using their computer. Is this true? This one will be free, but I can see this as a potentially recurring problem that could easily cost over $100 a pop for labor. Does anybody know another way to reset the light?

RAV4

by mark (no login)

I recently purchased a 2002 RAV4. It is an L model with a standard transmission. So far I like it very much. The good things are: agile handling; better looking materials used in interior than the Ford Escape; good gas mileage for an SUV. The bad things are: no variable intermittant wipers; a small gas tank limits the range to only 300 miles, so you have to stop for gas too often; the 4 cylinder could be a bit bigger, although the standard seems peppier than the automatic; and it is difficult to load gear into the rear with the privacy screen in place.

Is Turbo timer needed?

I got my 1991 2.4 TD SSRX Surf Saterday. It had all the belts and cambelt replaced. Radiator flushed.
I'm not a hard driver, do I need a turbo timer? Does it help in offroad conditions?
Heading off tomorrow on my first offroad experience. I'm from Dunedin New Zealand and heading into Central Otago, Danseys Pass, Naseby, Saint Bathans and back to Dunedin on Monday via the Dunstan Trail. Anything that comes to mind about what I should look out for will be appreciated.
