Overheating Surf

by (no login)

Hi,

Re Hilux Surf Over heating

After a run of 20 mins and about 20 miles at 60mph the engine overheats when idling. I replaced the thermostat and flushed the rad because I found the top of the radiator to be cold. The top of the radiator now gets hot.

The temperature gauge is steady at just below half way, until I am stationary in traffic. After toping up the coolant to the correct level I soon noticed that the level in the expansion tank had risen after a run, and the day later it overheated, and I lost 2litres of coolant.

I'm thinking the possible causes might be:
1.Inefficient radiator needs cleaning or replacing
2.Inefficient water pump
3.Defective filler cap loosing pressure

However, having read that these vehicles suffer from cracked heads and head gasket problems, I am wondering if there could be an excess pressure in the cooling system.

Any advice would be welcome thank you.

Nick

I would do all of those things that you suggested immediately, particularly the checking of the radiator.

Air bubbles in the coolant

by (no login)

Not had the vehicle more than a couple of weeks after buying it from a dealer (he doesn't want to know) and it boiled over. I noticed the top of the rad was cold. I topped it up with 2 Litres of water when cold and after a couple of days the expansion tank was full. I've had the rad out and flow tested and it's fine. I've replaced the stat and rad pressure cap.

I've tested it again and after about 6 miles the expansion tank was 3/4 full and with the engine off there were bubbles entering the exp tank. I turned the engine back on and considerably more bubbles and hot water exited and filled the tank.

I'm thinking that the cooling system is being overpressurised by a leak to a combustion chamber, although there are no signs of emulsification in the oil.

Any thoughts please?

Little Black Box

by Ken (no login)

I have just imported a 1994 3.0 litre turbo diesel Surf which refuses to start (major bummer !). Mechanically it seems fine but the auto electrician thinks it may be a problem with a “little black box” mounted under the drivers seat which he believes is an immobiliser.

My question is – does anyone with a similar vehicle have a “little black box” mounted under the drivers seat? I am trying to determine if it is an immobiliser, is it a third party item, or is it some other gadgetry which is supplied by Toyota in all Surfs ?

Landcruiser are noted for there Fan hub not to work probably, which causes overheating espically under load from Toyota you can some more Silcone oil an put in the fan hub. If you are mechanically minded some radiator places can do it.

Wind Whistle - '92 RV6 4Runrer

by (no login)

Help!

My 4Runner has this bloody annoying wind whistle at any speed of over 40-50km/h. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side A-pillar area, but I've tried taping up all possible projections near it and the whistle didn't go...!

I've also heard other 130-series 4Runners whistling merrily past too, so it's not just mine. Has anyone out there encountered (and fixed) it?

New 2.4TD hilux surf owner

by (no login)

Hi everyone, I have just purchased a 1993 hilux surf of the 2.4 turbo diesel variety. After searching the web I found this site and sat up for hours reading all the articles (Very informative). After owning the vehicle for about a week now I am quite impressed after taking it for a drive of about 800klms and some minor off road work. I am a little disapointed with the fuel econonmy though getting to the E mark after only about 400klms is this normal?

I have a more few questions that I ask your help on answering

1. My hilux has a demister type push button switch in the centre console on the passenger side of the fog light switch. It has a blue triangle on it and looks sort of like an aggresive japanese man within the triangle. I can't find out what it does except for slightly raising the engine revs when at idle. I think that it would serve some other purpose as the vechicle already has an ilde up switch on the main console. Any thoughts much appriciated.

2. I would also like some information as to how the dual battery set up works. Is it one battery for accessories and one for startup or are both wired together for both purposes. My main reason for asking is for the possibility of hooking up accessories like a fridge, and making sure that i don't flatten both bateries not enabling me to start the vehicle again.

3. The final question is about insurance. I have rang at least 20 insurance companies about the truck and all except one has refused insurance. The problem is that the premium is $1710 on 60% no claim with $1600 excess.(quite expensive) I was wondering how everybody else insures there Surfs in Australia. Although both me and my wife are under 25 most of the companies refused insurance because of the vechicle, not because of our age. Please help me save a few dollars.

My email adress is listed for any advice.
Thanks to everybody in advance for your help.

Kevin from Sydney Australia.

Re : New 2.4TD Hilux Surf Owner

by (no login)

Hi Kevin
Congrats on your purchase. We are in Perth and my wife and I bought our 92 2.4TD before Xmas last year and are rapt with it.
In regard to the fuel economy, if you have only ever had petrol vehicles, you need to change your driving habits now!! The diesel needs to be nursed along and you simply do not go putting your foot down, otherwise you will chew the juice at a VERY scary rate. We get similar mileage from our Surf with the majority of driving done in the city. When we do go on long trips the mileage does not improve a great deal. Read the archives and you will get some ideas as to how to improve your economy.

In regard to the demister button, sorry can't help, our Surf is different.

The dual batteries are set up in parallel. If you wish to hook up accessories you would be advised to have a switch installed to prevent both batteries going flat. Check with the likes of ARB or 4X4 Australia magazine for options.

We had no problems insuring our Surf in Perth. The RAC came out the most economical at $450 for 12 months with a 55% NCB. The car is insured for $20k. Yes we get our insuarnce much cheaper than you guys in the east.

For other really good info check out www.fds.com.au/toyotasurf/techtalk/default.htm

It is a great vehicle if you look after it properly and make sure that you get the oil changed every 5000ks.

Happy Surfing
Andrew

Insurance (Sydney)

by (no login)

Kevin

I to am a new Surf owner...just purchased a 93 2.4td. Insurance has been my biggest/only problem with the car. I ended up with "Just Car Insurance" I'm 24 with 60% NCB and it cost me about $1400. Not very cheap considering my commodore used to cost me $800. After getting the policy they are now trying to get me to install an immobiliser...they say one must be fitted or the policy is void...I've been quoted about $300 to get an immobiliser and keyless entry put in.

I'll only be staying with "Just Cars" until I turn 25, then I'll switch over to "Aussie 4x4 Insurance"..seems to be the go...and sounds alot cheaper..about $600.

I'm also interested in the battery setup..if you find out anymore info please let me know.

Cheers

96 4runner SR5 - very rough ride

i have a 1996 4runner sr5 with 4wheel drive. I had a problem with the car because it has a very rough ride and when i go over bumps my head goes up and down. i changed the shocks to rancho rs5000 which i think made the ride even rougher... any suggestions on smoothing up the ride?

Bumpy

by JS (no login)

Rancho shocks have always been rough. They are valved to handle the big bumps but don't perform too well on the small everyday road bumps. Give Old Man Emu a try. But don't waste your time by just changing the shocks, the best ride will come from getting both new springs and shocks. The Toyota stock springs are only good for about four years before the rear begins to sag. You will also gain another inch or so of vehicle height as a bonus. OME has made Lancruiser aftermarket suspensions for many many years and everyone I know that has them has been very happy with the ride improvements. One other note, if you decide to try OME, order the parts designated by a "C" at the end of the part numbers. This is the softer option and will be the most "C"omfortable. Good luck!

It is difficult for us techs now days to get the customer to approve our repair fee let alone the estimate fee in my case $20.
I know I am not a mechanic instead a consumer Electronics Technician but we all have to make a living so some of you mechanics probably dealt with this problem in the past, any help is appreciated.

Help!!! Toyota A/C compressor question

by Jeff (no login)

I am putting A/C in a 1992 with a 22RE motor.
All my parts went right in accept for the compressor. (All parts are used). The compressor mount has a pulley which matches up perfectly to the pulley on the crank. However, when I bolted on the compressor, its pully was about 1 1/2" to far forward. Whats the problem? Is there another compressor with a shorter front? The compressor mount/pully went right on and it seems it can only go one way, plus it matches prfectly with the unused groove on my cranks pulley. It must be the wrong compressor, but I can only find one make. Is there another!!!

85 4-Runner,22R-E,W56 runs hot

by (no login)

85 4-Runner,22R-E,W56(5 speed manual),230 000 KM,everything stock,2 row/core Toyota brass rad recored 2 years ago (about 10 000 KM ago)because of fin corrosion due to living in Nova Scotia,195 degree stat (88 Celcius) and now the begins to run hot the temp keeps climbing once warmed up the only way to lower the temp a bit or maintain it at the bad high value is to turn the heater on high.
I checked the following:pulled ECU codes no trip codes, checked rad for cold spots found none rad is very hot when temp is above normal I assume that stat is opening as fast as it should, the water pump is not noisy & does not leak or have freeplay,I don't hear any air bubles or the such inside the truck with heater on & driving,I still decided to bleed the cooling system by parking front end on ramps turning truck on with rad cap removed turning on heater on high & alternating the vent control between hot & cold (no ac equipped)revving the engine & squeezing the top rad hose but no luck. Finally I did not play with distributor timing or the ingnition timing or the such.
I am new to mechanics as I mentioned a long time & have learned lots from all you but this one has got me puzzled.

hey buddy
I HAVE BEEN ADVISED MY TURBO BLOKE THAT I WOULD NOT GAIN ANY INCREASE OF POWER 2 MY SURF 2.4 T BY FITTING A COOLER BUT I HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO REMOVE THE ORIGNAL PUMP ELECTRONIC AND PLACING A MANUAL PUMP OUT OF AN EARLIER 2.4 TO GAIN ALOT MORE POWER.
DUE TO THE ELECTRONIC PUMP IT HAS BEEN SET WITH ITS SETTINGS THAT CANNOT BE CHANGED.

MAYBE RESEARCH THAT IDEA AS TO I STILL AM AND IF YOU FIND OUT SOME OTHER INFO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SEND ME SOME .

ALSO I HAVE DONE ALOT OF MODS TO MY SURF SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME ON ALL AREAS

intercooler

by Sparky (no login)

I've heard and seen the great power gains from intercooling a diesel. water to air unit is the go mainly because of its size, you can get a 40 cm square unit 10 cm deep, this combined with a mandrel bent exhaust is the go!!

Highlander -> Australian equivalent??

by (Login BigFella_73)

I was browsing the Toyota site and noticed a vehicle called a Highlander. Does anyone know if there's a Highlander equivalent from Toyota in Australia?

Thanks.

Highlander equivalent - No not in Oz

by (no login)

Down under we dropped the 4Runner when the KZN185 came in during 1996. Models after 1995 have been imported from Japan as low volume imports (Surfs). If I'm right the Highlander is the top of the range 4Runner. The Surfs have the SSRG. Australia has the SR5 Hilux, Prado and Landcruiser, Lexus and the small RAV4, Cheers Beddo (Sydney)

4runner Diesels

by David (no login)

Were there any Toyota diesels sold in the USA? I know Toyota didnt sale the Land Cruiser as a diesel in the States. You can find them in Canada and Mexico but not the US. I have been told they didnt sale a few numbers of diesel mini trucks and maybe a 4runner.

If not I am interested in learning more about the 3L diesel motor. Did this motor only come as a turbo or was it also offered as NA motor? I would like to convert a 4runner into a diesel if the motor offers reasonable power. Also what is the gear difference between a 3L equiped truck and one was an R series motor.

thanks
Dave
