Part for sale

by Aaron (no login)

I have a 1993 HiLux Surf front bumper for sale. Gun metal grey with chrome model, recessed indicators and with OE flare bits. It's in perfect condition. I just got a bullbar fitted so I don't need it anymore. Price?, make me a reasonable offer and it will be considered. I'd rather sell it privately rather than to a wrecker who'll sell it for 3-4x the price they bought it for. email me at the address below. I'm in Perth, WA.

Cheers,
Aaron

Performance Mods for the 3VZ-E

by (no login)

What has anyone out there done to improve the performance of the 3VZ-E? I've heard that bigger exhausts can be quite effective. What about removing the cat converter as well - does this stuff up the EFI sensing, or something else sinister like that? What about the tuning of the engine itself - anything worthwhile, or should I save up for a supercharged 5VZ-FE, and try to shoehorn that in?

Re: Performance Mods for the 3VZ-E

by Rich (no login)

I've tried everything to improve HP for my 95 4runner limited. K&N filter, "tornado", I have a borla cat back exhaust but really didn't notice the power difference. I did manage to obtain a straight pipe in place of the cat. I really noticed a power difference and much louder exhaust from the borla. However, the fumes that came out of the pipe was unbareable, so I put the cat back in place. There are no supercharger available for the 3.0 and my head gasket failed once, now I lost compression on not one but two cylinders; one on each side of the v6. I'm really thinking about selling my 4runner for a sequoia. good luck

Voltmeter switch on VZN130

by (no login)

I'm putting (read shoehorning) a second battery into my 4Runner for running the Engel when camping overnight. I heard that you can install a switch that enables the reading of the factory voltmeter to be switched between batteries. Can anyone out there shed some light on how to do this? I don't think you have to pull the dash apart to do this (thank God).

Don't waste your time and money Dan. I went down this track. Get new coils fitted to the rear and be done with it. You will have to get them fitted eventually anyway.

Does anyone 'round here know how to make the Toyota EPC program work properly? Everytime I enter the CD setup screen, when I choose which CD-Roms to add, it just goes back to the previous screen without actually adding them. Anyone else run into this?

Buying a Surf-What should I look out for?

by (no login)

Could anybody point out things to beware of when buying a Surf. The model I'm looking at is a 92 with the 2.4 turbo Diesel donk. It has 114k on the clock and seems respectably quiet for an oiler. Also I am aware that being an import makes getting insurance a bit more difficult. Does anyone have any experience of getting insurance for these things in NSW? Any comments would be welcome. Particularly w.r.t the vehicle as a long term prospect and as far as parts and running costs in Australia are concerned.

Thanks

Dont buy a Diesel ???

by Alex (no login)

Really Jason, where did you get that from. In my experience most cars over 5 years old regardless of fuel drip oil. Diesel engines are generally better than most. My 9 year old Surf 3L does not spill a drop on the floor whereas my 9 year old SAAB 9000 has a grotty patch of black oil the size of a dinner plate under it.
All I can say to Jamie is... If you want a great SUV for a great price buy a Surf 3L diesel from a reputable dealer after a RAC check. They will point to any problems such as leaks and dont be put off by the bad experience of a few, as bad luck even strikes new car buyers. Good luck.

What's the difference?

by Dean (no login)

The SSR-G is the highest factory spec and includes Recaro interior amongst other minor add-ons.Mine had factory fitted cruise. Make sure you get the cooling system cleaned out and checked as a priority. The Surf rear coils will need replacing at some stage. With regular maintenance you will be very happy. The 3 litre is a great engine. Enjoy.

Thanks for that Dean. I plan to give the cooling system a sever test as soon as I pick it up (I know a great steep long winding road up in the Scarp), as Im heading up into the Kimberlies from Perth in the next few weeks. I had a SGIO mech examination done prior to signing up and all they found was a ripped CV boot and the brake disks needed skimming. Of course they can't look into the radiator. The servicing seemed to be up to date so I hope the (prev)Japanese owner looked after it.

4Runner tyre carrier

by Dan (no login)

Hi Jay,

Unfortunately there's no easy way out with our vehicles as it's bumber is not a heavy duty chassis-mounted unit.

So after a harrowing research process I eventually took the plunge of retro-fitting a 2nd-hand factory Surf body-mounted tyre carrier onto my Australian-spec 4Runner. I bought the rack at a wreckers for $275, but the fabrication of the required internal bracing (for both the tailgate and rear-RHS corner) was a huge task. Firstly you have to strip the trim from the whole rear RHS and tailgate of your vehicle, which is bad enough. I drew up some plans for internal bracing (based on the factory installation) and a fabricator made and fitted them. It was a massive job but he did very well. A guy in the US did it too; his website can be found by searching for '4Runner tire carrier' on Yahoo.

The other alternatives are a Kaymar rear bumber replacement / tyre carrier, or one of two other wheel carriers: a centre-mount unit that is integrated with a (new) Hayman Reece towbar, or a chassis-mount carrier from 4x4 System. I haven't seen the former, but the latter utilises an extended chassis rail to poke down and through the bumper; it is adequate but moves around a fair bit with the large leverage involved.

As far as cost is concerned, the chassis-mount unit is the cheapest (~$550 if you fit it yourself); both the Kaymar bumper or towbar units cost over a grand; I got a good deal with mine but to do it again would probably cost ~$700-$800.

Good luck with your project!

Hi the ECT stands for electronic controled transmision.
When it is in the power mode it keeps the revs longer in each gear and leaves the torque converter on so it doesnt put to much load on the engine say when towing.

Hello to all Surf/4 Runner owners. I've had my 1994 SSR x 3.0 for 2 months now and love it to bits! As I live in England and Toyota only import the 4 Runner they have been less than helpful as my Surf is an import.I've just ordered a Hilux/4 Runner manual from an online store in Australia ($58 AUS)and hope it will explain just what this button is for. I have a hunch it's for normal/sports mode but may be totally wrong! If anyone is still having problems finding manuals for petrol & diesel Surfs/4 Runners post amessage and I'll leave the web address

the red button

by Aaron (no login)

I'm assuming that you all are talking about the red button above the "P" in the auto Surf. I had a friend translate it for me. Basically, from what it says,it is a lock, which locks it in "P". When the ignition is off/key out, you are unable to shift out of "P". If you hold down the button you are then able to change out of "P". I'm not too sure of why you would have to do this... maybe if you need to leave the car in neutral or something?

Engaging 4WD

engaging 4WD

by (no login)

Hi,
you do not have to reverse it for 2wd to 4wd if it is manual shift Just stop the surf and change if the shift lever does not move all the way into position, move your surf in fwd or reverse gear for a foot or two and try again. If it is auto there should be a button on the small shift lever (Hi - Low shift) press it to go 4WD. I hope this helps.
Enjoy your self.

how to switch out of 4WD

by (no login)

You do not need to reverse to stitch into 4WD . all you have to do is be sure the vehicle is in nuetral and not moving. Then depress the clutch pedal and swith it into 4WD. to take it out of 4WD depress the clutch pedal, put it into 2WD and reverse about 10 Meters to disengage the hubs.

if you do not have automatic locking hubs you have to get out of the vehicle and switch the locking hubs to 2WD and repeat the following steps.

I found that the globes 100watt/55watt high/low had a yellow glass lens over the top of an ordinary head light globe.
The lights I had only take the head light globes not driving light globes.
What I did was connect the high beam of these globes up only, pulled out all the old wiring and rewired with a single relay and switch which I connect to my high beam circuit.
The result was still a lot better than the normal head lights and they are 100w/80w globes in thee headlights.

Fuel economy

by (no login)

I purchased a '92 3L Turbo about 4 mnths ago and the only grizzle I have is concerning the fuel economy.I am averaging between 13 and 15 L/100 kms.I have read through the archives and it would seem that 400kms from the 65l tank is the best you can hope for from a standard fuel/air/exhaust setup. Is this from full to empty on the gauge or when the low fuel light comes on?
Does anyone know if the altitude difference between WA and Japan is significant enough to maybe need a different setup for the injector pump and or turbo?

Fuel Economy

Hi John,
I had 2.4TD 92 Surf and it gave me roughly the same mileage but I never tried from full to empty tank. I do not know the difference of altitude between Japan and WA but I took my Surf to 14000 feet in Hindu Kush mountains and its turbo became totally inefective between 12000 to 13000 ft because of thin air, but still it went like a cheetah and with no problems. I cannot say much about adjustments of injectors and pump.

If you are getting around only 400klms to a tank there is something wrong with either your injectors or pump timing i always get from full to empty 500klms or more.
I average around 10 to 10.5litres per 100klms with a mixture or city highway cycle.

Fuel economy

by (no login)

Hi all, I've just re-fuelled my newly aquired 93 3.0lt TD SSR-G Surf for the first time and it returned me 12.23 Lt/100km. (8.18km/Lt, 23.11mpg)This was approximately a 50% combination of "normal" city driving and highway/hilly country road driving. (I'm in South Australia)
I travelled 418km from full 'til the needle was almost on the 'E', If you do the sums, (based on 65lt tank)this means there was 14 litres of fuel left. (another 100k's worth) so 500k's + is possible from my machine.

51.12 Litres to fill
418km travelled

It uses the same amount of fuel around town whether I drive economically or flog it with OD turned off and ECT on. Aircon uses up about 1L/100kms. Auto must also increase consumption over a manual. I had my injections rebuilt with new nozzels but made no difference. A waste of $770. I recommend inspection and cleaning only. Magazine reviews of new 3.0 turbo and non turbo Hiluxes also report poor fuel economy around 13L/100km. I will have pump timing checked next.

1992 Hilux Surf SSRX 2.4TD owners manual

by (no login)

Hi,

I'm looking for a copy of owners manual for a 1992 Hilux Surf SSRX 2.4TD with automatic transmission. It's a second hand import from Japan and I'd like an English version. I already have a Haynes manual but that one doesn't explain how things work an so on.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

Customing out my 88 4runner

by (no login)

Here is where I need help:

I want to remove the hard top from my 'runner and put a bikini top on it. I have a stereo system, and so I am getting an alarm for it as well. I am wondering what would be the best way for me to weather proof the truck's bed, and keep the cab as is. I pulled out the rear carpet and paneling and was thinking of lava lining it, but I am not sure if that is the best method. Also, the back seats can't exactly be lava lined and I'd like to keep them in. So, I am searching for someone that may have attempted this, or would give me some ideas. I despise the soft top by the way. I don't know where I could get a bikini top for my truck, and I am also looking for a new boot to cover the gear shift, but I can't find them anywhere either.

4Runner soft top

by (no login)

I myself have an 87' 4Runner now that it is warm I want to take the top off. I am looking for a soft top. Since you are putting a bikini top, and you don't like the soft top, do you have one you are getting rid of, or do you know where I can get one. It is better to just e-mail me. My address is dpizarro1@yahoo.com . ANd good luck with lining the back of your truck.

make your own gear boot man
i just brought some grey leather for like 3 bucks and sewed it on mums sewing machine and it is as good as factory
measure up the stick length first so you get it right
as for the canopy i just chucked on a rollbar instead of the hardtop

Toyota diesel eh?

by (no login)

I e-mailed you a few days ago. I also happen to have a VW, but mine happens to be an 85' Jetta with 475,000kms and still going strong!Trade? As I wrote you before, I live in Trail. I happened to hear of a man in Fruitvale(nearby) who is doing just this. He has a '91 Toyota, and is going to put in a 3B Toyota diesel, an excellent choice. I heard this through a friend, and I will see if I can find out more. I will let you know how it goes.

Cheers, Nathan

sounds right

by (no login)

I pull a trailor for my business in the summer time and I usually get around 12 mpg. When I am not pulling I get around 13 mpg. ALthough the best I ever got was doing 55 mph on the highway and I got 18 mpg. The winter time kills me. I usually put around 130 miles on a tank of gas.

Re: 95 4runner gas mileage?

by (no login)

Do you have the optional larger tires (31/10.50/15)? If so, you may want to drop down to the OEM size which is 225/75/15. The larger tires are heavy and also create more road resistance. Toyota sells the 4Runner with the optional larger tire size which makes it look real beefy. What they should have done is also change the gear ratio which is probably 4:10. If you do have the larger tires, the other expensive option is to change your gear ratio to 4:56 or 4:88. good luck.

ARB bars

by Aaron (no login)

Has anyone got an ARB Bull-bar or Sahara bar on their HiLux Surf? I'm in Australia and am thinking of getting one of these fitted. Any bad comments about them? Are they good value for money?

Cheers,
Aaron
