Radio aerialby Jeff (no login)My Radio aerial bent on a low hanging branch and now doesnt retract fully when removing ignition key. Any ideas on how to repair or replace? Radio aerialby Mark (no login)Jeff, I did exactly the same thing. You can buy replacements from auto stores, mine cost me $26. They are really easy to install and should take you about 15 - 20 minutes to replace. Good luck. from IP address 202.67.64.147 |
Radio Aerialby Jeff (no login)Mark, thanks for the info, but most places I've contacted here in brisbane australia want to know the make of the aerial and are quoting approx, $95.00 for the aerial alone. Can you give any extra info? Thanks Jeff from IP address 203.16.61.80 |
Aerialby Mark (no login)Jeff, I bought mine from Marlows in Perth (I think they're on the net). If you undo the locking nut on the base of the antenna (where it goes into the panel) the antenna and the plastic drive strip should all come out in one piece. All I did was take it in to them and they matched it up straight away. Hope that helps. Mark. from IP address 202.67.64.142 |

REAR WINDOWby BLAKE (no login)I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM ON MY 91. CHECK THE REAR WINDOW WIPER AND MAKE SURE IT IS ALL THE WAY SEATED AGAINST THE STOP. Re: Rear Windowby Blake (no login)Im sorry to hear the wiper didnt work. Make sure its all the way seated against the stop. Also try this, take the switch out and clean the contact points. You might have some black build up on the points. Its easy to do I have to do it all the time to my passenger window. Every Toyota I have owned has had problems with the electric windows! Try that, if it doesnt work let me know. Your problem will not beat me! Good luck Blake from IP address 211.133.118.84 |
rear window relayby Jason (no login)I had the same problem with my rear window, I went to the Omron website and downloaded the internal wiring diagram of the relays. Re: 92 Surf rear window.by (no login)Mark, Had similar problem less than a month ago. Symptoms leading to failure were intermittant operation from either inside or with the key at the door, Finally failed totally and would not wind up. Found that my problem was contacts in window relay had burnt out due to excessive current being drawn by window motor ( Window tracks were dirty ). Question - can you hear a click from inside the rear left of the vehicle when you try to operate the window. If you do it sounds like you might have the same problem. It can be repaired cheaply - if you're up for it. Let me know Mick from IP address 203.22.5.20 |
92 Surf rear windowby Mark (no login)Mick, it sounds like exactly the same problem, except mine wont wind down. I actually pulled out the small circuit board which is where the clicking was coming from but couldn't see anything wrong. I'd really appreciate any advice you can give. Where are the contacts you referred to? Mark from IP address 202.67.64.131 |
4Runner Rear Window Repair 101 ( Very Long ! )by (no login)Mark, and anyone else on the planet looking for answers to the number one bitch about 4Runners. Please Note: This is only 100% accurate for Aug 90 4Runner. the controller box changed from time to time - though I suspect it will be similar for all series 2 4Runners. If you are getting a "CLICK" from the relay box when you operate the switch / lock, it means that all other interlock systems are okay. If you are NOT getting a "click" from the relay board, it means fuse blown / Circuit Breaker tripped, or one of the many interlocks are not functioning. For those who are interested, these include: 1. Window Up switch - activated when the window regulator reaches the Up position - located adjacent to window motor. 2. Door lock switch - Turns on that little light on the dash when the tailgate is not locked - located to the right of Window up Switch, connected to lock button. 3. Tailgate Closed - Activates when the Tailgate is closed ( Like it wasn't obvious ) located at the lock mechanism itself to monitor the position of the latches. NOTE: If these are cheated and you operate the window with the tailgate in the horizontal position you WILL break the rear window if you do not support it adequately. DON'T SAY YOU WEREN'T WARNED !!!!! 4. Wiper Home - Detects if the Rear wiper is correctly parked - located in the wiper mechanism above the rear window. Some of the above switches are normally open, others are normally closed, check both states before assuming a switch has failed. All of these switches are connected to the Rear Window Control Relay located in the rear left of the vehicle ( just to the rear of the left side storage box ). This is really a box containing one circuit board, a number of relays ( Varies with year model ) and some surface mount components (mostly transistors)on the board. If your truck passed the above test and you are getting a "click" when you attempt to operate the rear window, it is probable that the contacts of one of the relays have burnt out. The board in my 90 model had six relays - four of one type, and two of another. I felt for the source of the "click" and replaced the four matching relays (my truck is 12 years old)at a cost of $3 Australian each - $12 total - much better than $580 quoted by Toyota. This rectified the problems with my rear window. BE ADVISED - THIS BOARD IS DOUBLE-SIDED !! THE RELAYS ARE SOLDERED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BOARD. If you are not familiar with the techniques required to perform this task, I suggest you take the board to your local TV repair shop - might cost you $40 ( half an hour ) If shopping for replacement relays you will require the correct pinout ( it is a standard )and ensure they can handle at least 10 amps. anything less than this and you will be repeating this in a few months time. While you have the tailgate open I would suggest that you clean the window runners and regulator gears( the two big s-shaped ones ) and apply some form of dry lubrication to the contact areas of these gears. I also found some major probs inside my rear window motor but I'll save this fix for private email if required. Another helpful source of info can be found at http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4x4/CheapTricks/RearWindow.shtml#Troubleshooting although it is aimed at series one 4runners. Hope this has been of some help. If I can get hold of a digital camera, I may dedicate a web page to this. 95 4 runner back windowby (no login)just read your comments on the toyota forum site and i just started having problems with my back window yesterday.....with ignition on the inside switch works just fine......but the talgate switch goes only down....its dead going up....switch meters out ok!!! is there a separate relay in the gate for the key switch??????.....with key off the tailgate glass goes down but not up....same problem......thanks for any help!!!! from IP address 64.214.34.22 |
95 4 runner back windowby (no login)Brian, Not sure if we have the same problem, but I am experiencing a problem where the rear tailgate window motor on my 1994 4-runner sounds like it is working, but the window barely moves. Moves a little better down, than up when it does move. What I found on the net that may explain this probem is as follows: "Once I installed the replacement and hooked up the electrical connections, I found my work was not done. The motor gear seemed to be missing some teeth, as the window moved 2-3 inches about every third rev of the motor. But it did work. As it turned out the teeth weren't broken off, but had a V-shaped notch worn or broken in the center contact area of the tooth. I am told Toyota only sells the motor and gears as an assembly. The motor I removed seemed functional, but that gear was surely on its last leg (or teeth)" I called Toyota and they said that it may be a regulator($113)? Not sure, I will be looking at both. I really need a diagram of the tailgate to better understand the parts layout...... from IP address 66.26.57.50 |
Surf rear wndowby LM (no login)I had the same problem on my 92 2.4td. fnally bought a 2nd motor from a wreckers and replaced the motor and regulator. 95 4 runner back windowby (no login) Where are the teeth you are referring to? on the regulator gears or in the window motor. The window motor in my 90 model utilizes a standard DC motor running via a nylon worm and wheel to operate the rear window regulator which is lift-assisted by a large spiral assist spring. mickclements@austarnet.com.au from IP address 203.22.5.20 |
back windowby LM (no login)The gears are within the motor. it uses a metal shaft conecting with nylon gearing, i found my gearing to be worn down therefore the window would stop & start of fail all together. Overheating Engine__& Taking off restrictions on cruise controlby (no login)I have recently bought a 94 SSG 3L Surf Auto. About 4 days after buying it i drove it 400kms to work. Only a short way into my trip a was going up a hill about 4-5kms long and only doing 80-90kph with the cruise control on an overdrive on(and aircon on low) when i realised that the temp gauge was rising (quite quickly too) so high that i dropped my speed down untill i was at the top of the hill. The gauge almost went into the red. I also noticed the same problem went overtaking trucks and sitting on 125kph for a little while. The rest of the trip was pretty flat but every time there was a slight incline the temp gauge would start slowly moving up untill on the flat again. No coolent seems to have been lost. Where should i start fault finding. Therostat, Raidiator, Turbo?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My other quick question is how do u take off the restrictions on cruise control the max only sits on 114kph. Thanks Ian from IP address 203.10.1.27 |
overheating - problems that may cause itby (no login)It seems acommon problem on surfs it can be a few things A. it could be the fan hubbing slipping have that checked, what i did with mine is you can buy the oil that goes in them, i added more than normal so it locks up quicker. B. make sure there is no air restriction in front of radiator like big spot lights c. It is common on some sufs that the raiator core is partially cloged get a raiator place to flush it out Also dont get them in the red to often you will end up blowing a gasket, on steep hills throttle back don"t keep it flat to the floor all that is doing is giving it more fuel and get it hotter a lot quicker, those are the things i have done and i don't have the overheating problem any more from IP address 203.166.96.236 |

What is the orange one? It seems to be coming on sometimes for no apparent reason and then going off again a few minutes later. Surf boost and fuellingby (no login)Hi, Can anyone tell me the best way to adjust fuelling on a 1990 Surf with 2L-T. Where is the adjustment? Also, I have increased boost via a TurboSmart boost adjuster. It fits in the hose to the wastegate actuator. A word of warning though, DO NOT fit one of these unless you have a boost gauge fitted as it is very easy to over boost and detonate the engine. I am running mine at 11psi max boost which has made some difference but will improve when I can fuel it up a bit. I have fitted an Autometer gauge (50mm)which is simple to fit. I fitted one of these on an 80 series 4.2L 1HZ Cruiser when I fitted a DTS turbo kit and never had a problem. On the subject of fuelling- diesels are the opposite to petrol engines ie. over fuelling causes increased combustion temperatures which destroys valves etc. Under fuelling doses no damage- just limits power. If you are playing with fuelling and have not done so before, thebest safeguard is to fit a pyrometer in the exhaust as close as possible to the turbo (downstream). Optimum temperature is 470-500 degC. Hope someone can help with my fuelling adjustment question- there is so much hanging off the turbo I'm not sure which adjustment is which. Toyota Hilux Surf SSR 2.0 Turbo Dieselby (no login)Hie My Surf has an electrical problem which started when it blew parts of the computer board. The electrician fixed the board but after that the car just ran down the battery. I was then told the problem was because the alterantor was undercharging so they fixed the alternator. However the problem wouldnt go away so they then told me there was a short circuit on the ignition. This problem was supposedly fixed and I had been driving the car for a week, when suddenly the problem resurfaced again. Now I am told its probable the starter motor or the engine is about to seize. Can anybody out there please give me a clue as to what is happening because I seem to be paying for the wrong things. It seems the diagnosis is completely wrong. Replacing the clutch plate and clamping plate did not solve the problem. Aparently it is a problem with the friction plate in the fly wheel. Is this a common problem? How can it be fixed? Can the fly wheel be replaced with a solid type? - Thanks from IP address 203.38.188.1 |
re clutchby (no login)I had the same problem with my 89 surf my new clutch slipped it was sorted by fitting a genuine toyota part the first one was a re manufactured unit (unknown to me) and was basically crap! Have you used a new part many re manufacturing companies use sub standard friction materials and the surf dosent like it beig quite powerful an heavy! I have had no problems Since Good luck.
