Blowing smoke and how i fixed it

by (no login)

This might help larry previously who had a question about his Surf blowing smoke, i had the same problem i had it looked at twice no one could fix it.
Well i fixed it myself the other day being a mechanic myself i wouldn't let it bet me , i orginally had a new head put on , but what they did they when they put the hoses on to the egr vacum valve which is connected to the choke they put them on the wrong way thus when the engine was warmed up the choke valve would partialy close and when you changed gears due to the vacum effect it would nearly close the choke causing a lot of fuel into the engine thereby creating the blue white smoke. Once i figured where the hoses should be the valve was closed off when engine was hot no more smoke runs beautifully

Blowing black smoke and how I fixed it

by (no login)

Hi All,

I live in the UK, and bought a Surf 2.4TD in July.

It was due for the MOT test to be renewed this week, and it failed on the emissions. The exhaust was blowing some black smoke when revved or under load, ever since I bought it. It being diesel, I assumed this was normal, but at the MOT the emissions were running at 7% (what, I don't know).

Anyway, took it in to have the injector pump reset. Now the emissions are 0.72%, and it flew through the MOT. Fantastic as i'm sure you'll agree.

The only problem is the loss of acceleration. It can't have lost much, and I can live with it, but it wasn't great in the first place. Any ideas, short of putting the injector pump back to the previous settings (I don't consider this an option!).

Cheers, and a Merry Christmas to all.

Neil

Denso OEM supplier for Toyota is now selling original oxygen sensors aftermarket ask for the nearest distributor by calling Denso in Long Beach,California at 1-888-963-3676 or www.denso-dsca.com then click on "aftermarket".
An example would be single wire oxygen sensor for 85-87 4-Runner/Pickup equipped with a 22R-E engine Toyota part# 89465-19265 which has the equivalent Denso aftermaket # of 234-1051 which should sell for less than $105 (www.toyotadiscountparts.com).

Surf Manual

by (no login)

I have a 1990 Surf with 2L-T. Got a manual yesterday from Bookworks in Sydney (02) 9740-6766 for $49.95. It's an Australian book covering Hilux and 4Runner from 1978-97. It has a chapter on the turbo unit and specs throughout on the 2L-T. Not the greatest manual (crook photos) but fills in some of the blanks not covered in the Haynes manuals.

The manual is by Max Ellery and the code is EPTH4D.

Hope this helps. Also going back through the archives, Ken mentions some Toyota manuals- are they in English??

Small hassle

by Donna (no login)

If you are in Australia, Suncorp Metway, Just Cars and Australian 4WD will insure you. NRMA won't insure you if you are under 29. There was hassle in the past apparently insuring for the market value rather than the agreed value.
They should be fully complied when they arrive in the country, just check for the Australian compliance plate . All importing will only be avalible through dealer come May 2002. Read as much as you can and ask lots of questions. Talk to mechanics, insurance companies and if you need a bank loan, suss that out first as I had trouble as they needed a valuation on the car before they would give me the money. I ended up taking out an unsecured loan and paid the higher interest rate. This wasn't so bad as I didn't have to declare finance on the car and insurance was cheaper. way up the pros and cons - get really confused then make your decision, but if you have always had your heart set on a Surf.....

rear overload proportional valve

A local garage just rejected my 85 4-Runner,22R-E,W56 for MVI (yearly safety inspection) and would like to buy a used rear overload proportional valve from a local junk yard from a 1990 4-Runner for only $25 (Toyota wants $230+tx).I would like to know if the 1990 4-Runner valve will work on my 85 4-Runner.
Which car batteries are best to buy Toyota (GM-AC Delco) or which aftermarket?I need one as my Wallmart Energizer 650 CCA battery which has 6 years warranty on it has only lasted almost 4 years, now will not turn engine over in mornings.Thank you

Advice on buying 92 surf

by (no login)

Hello
Ive been looking at buying a 92 surf but because it is an import will it be expensive for repairs?
All dealers tell me that parts are compatible with hilux and 4 runners, is this true?
Ive also heard that insurance can be expensive and hard to get, could this be why I see lots advertised privately and Ive found that most are being sold after short periods of ownership.
Any owners info would be appreciated as I dont know what to believe.
Thanks

94 Surf, 3litre turbo diesel mileage

by (no login)

Hi all,
My wife and I have just purchased a 94 SSRX-LE Surf, we are wondering what sort of mileage we should be getting around town and on the highway. At the moment we get about 400km per tank (around town, we haven't done much highway driving yet). This seems a little excessive to me as we don't drive it very hard.
Regards,
Matt.

3 litre mileage

by Dean (no login)

I have similar vehicle. I set the cruise on 90km per hour for 200klm on recent trip to Victoria and the very best I got was 11.5 litres per 100 klm. You can sit on 110klm and still get 12 litres per 100 klm. Around town mileage approx 12-13 litres/100klm. Don't forget your pulling around nearly 2 tonnes, riding on tyres with twice as much rubber on the road as a car with a shape as aerodynamic as a brick wall.
If this is your first diesel you have to learn to drive them differently to a gasolene powered vehicle.

Run 2 or 3 bottles of diesel injector cleaner through it to clean things up a bit. Might help.

Mileage

by Yousef (no login)

I've got the Hilux Surf 3.0 Turbo Diesel.
I find that it does alot better on Fuel on the Open Road, than it does in town.
I had to Drive from London to Frankfurt in Germany, and did it comfortably on two tanks. That was an eight hour drive averaging 130kmph-150kmph.
While doing short trips in town, I'll find the fuel being massacred.

3L surf economy

by Russell (no login)

I just bought a 3L surf and got 14.7 L/100km out of the 1st tank on gentle suburban driving. I think this is lousy. My 17year old 2.8L diesel Rocky consumed 9.5L/100km no matter how it was driven. The surf has been dyno tested and blows no smoke. I am running some injector cleaner through it now and changing the air cleaner for a foam finer filter. Have just changed the fuel filter. Will let you know if this improves the situation.

Surf Imports banned?

Hi Guys, love the site. Does anyone know if there is a ban on SURF imports next year or not? (for Australia) I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere and I don't know if the importers are telling me that so I order one straight away. It all sounds a bit dodgy to me.

Thanks for the informative site, all you guys have changed my negative attitude to imports.

hi donna,

i have heard that they are chaning the laws to make it harder to import them.

they are going to change the law so that you must have owned the vehicle in japan for at least 12 months before you can import it.

i wouldn't worry too much ......... there are plenty of surfs available.

New Import Scheme

by Dean (no login)

Thanks Ken for the link to details of the new import scheme. Toyota have been hard at work making sure we don't have future access to such great vehicles as the Surf or any other grey imported 4wd for that matter. I have noticed recently that the prices of these vehicles has risen somewhat. I would imagine that they will become most sought after when May 2002 rolls around given their excellent parts availability. What do you think?

Bill, sounds like a short to me. Recheck the wiring loom and also the globe braces inside the lights themselves. If that fails purchase a ampmeter and test the circuits that way. Don't use a higher rated fuse, you'll possibly do more damage.

RE : Fog Lights

by Andrew (no login)

Bill
Firstly DO NOT replace the blown fuse with a bigger fuse. This can cause a fire. You have a short somewhere in the system, whether it be in a wiring loom or in the spotties themselves. Depending on your capabilities, test all components of the system with an ohm meter or take it to an auto sparkie.
It should not be a major problem.
Good luck!

Fuel Economy

by tcha (no login)

I have a '92 Surf SSRG Auto 2.4TD, with 81000 Km Performance is very good and the vehicle runs very well. It is not excessively smokey. Economy is consistently around 14.2 Litres/100 Km (or approx 7Km/Litre with easy urban driving (Brisbane). Open road trips are not significantly better. I do not drive this vehicle hard and I would classify myself as mechanically sympathetic driver. I would have thought economy would be somewhat better than this. Am I deluding myself? Has anybody any information on running these vehicle on Diesel/LPG?

Fuel Economy

by Dean (no login)

Try running a good brand of diesel injector cleaner ( Nulon ) say three bottles, one in each of your next three full tanks. These vehicles have spent the last 8 or 9 years in stop start heavy Japanese traffic. My 3 litre was very sluggish and thirsty when I got it but now I regularly get 12 litres per 100 klms. You have to adjust your driving habits too. They are not like petrol engined vehicles where under load you just plant your foot and you go faster. In a diesel you just pump the fuel straight out the exhaust.

Thanks for the reply Peter. Just a couple of questions.
*How many Kms on your vehicle?
*Has this been your economy from the beginning or as a result of the HiClones?
*How old or in what condition are your injectors?
* Have you done any service work on the injectors?
Thanks in anticipation

* The vehicle has done 150,000 klms

* before i put the hiclones in i was averiaging around 12litre per 100klms
when driving normal conditions i know average around 10 to 10.5 per 100klms
but i did get 9.5 on the highway with cruise control on on a fairly flat bit of highway

* i just had my injectors done last month and where in normal wear conditions for injectors that would have done 150000klms

* I have had the hiclones in for about 8 months but i only had the injectors done last month done, did nothing to improve my fuel economy

* i am not sure but i say the injectors are orignal i did not buy the vehicle brand new

Turbo Timer

by Dean (no login)

Andrew, From info I have been able to gather Turbo Timers are literally a waste of good money. The only time it is necessary to let your motor run for a minute or two before turning off is if you have been working it particularly hard. More importantly I recently found out that when starting the engine you should wait for the glow plug light to go out before turning the key to start.
You would be better off saving your money for new rear springs. You will certainly need these in the future.

Re: Turbo timer

by Andrew (no login)

If you can train both youself and your wife to let the vehicle idle for 30 seconds before turning it off then you can save youself the hassel of putting in a turbo timer and the expense of around 120-190 dollars,as your vehicle is second hand straight from Japan it wouldnt have had a turbo timer and wouldnt have been left to idle for the turbo to wind down from the previous owner so if there is any likelyhood of damage then it would allready be done so I would say keep your money in your pocket for something else that may actually benefit you.

Smokey and other concerns

by Lanny (no login)

My surf seems to blow a blueish white smoke. I questioned this at the place of purchase. They were very helpful and said that it might be that the timing is out and that they would correct it for me. Can someone please state if this is true or not as this is of concern to me. It seems to happen at take off and now and then during driving. Also when I take my foot off the pedal at the desired speed there seems to be a grinding sound until I accelerate again (maybe the clutch plates?). One other thing (sorry about the length of questions)is it normal for the turbo to stay on until you have taken your foot off at the desired speed.
My surf is an automatic if that helps.

A big thank-you to anyone that reads this.

Smokey and other concerns

by Ken (no login)

G'day Lanny.
Re your smoke concerns.
It's hard to tell without seeing the vehicle, but as suggested could be the timing, OR poor injector nozzels, dirty fuel filter, or even dirty fuel. (A certain bacteria actually grows in diesel and can cause major problems.) I'd put a quality diesel additive that kills bacteria in for a few tanks. Can't do any harm. Get it from Autobarn etc.
Either way, if your dealer doesn't fix it, and it's not covered by warranty, you need to see a good diesel mechanic.
Diesels don't blow white smoke when healthy!

Re ? clutch noise:
You could check the manual linkage which may need adjustment, or the valve body could be faulty.

Re turbo engagement.
If your vehicle is a 2.4, it should engage around 2300 RPM, ( a 3L will come in earlier) and it will stay on after this RPM has been maintained. You just won't hear it spinning up to speed (turbo whine.)
The engine turbo light will stay on.
This is what it's supposed to do.
You won't 'over rev' the turbo as it's got a waste gate fitted to bleed off excessive exhaust gas.
Sorry mate.
No quick fixes here. I suggest you ensure that the dealer services the vehicle correctly, as your smoke problem could be a worry, as is the transmission noise. If in doubt, get someone else to work on it.

Best wishes.

Ken.

smoke ..............

by worthy (no login)

lanny,

my 2.4 surf also blew A LOT of snmoke when i first got it. the difference being that my smoke was black. i had the injectors serviced (nozzles replaced etc etc) & this cut down the black smoke considerably. i also add a diesel fuel additive which helps a lot.

as ken said, white/blue smoke is not good ..... i suggest you see a good diesel mechanic ASAP.

Blowing Bluey white Smoke

by (no login)

I Think I know the problem why it is blowing smoke, I have a Surf does the same thing in the morning when it is cold it runs a bit rough and blows that white blue smoke does it when I change from 1st to second and is not as bad when engine is fully warm but still does it when I take off from a standing start. The diagnosis (1)compression to low cause the smoke and rough start when cold probably due to compression rings being worn my compression was 410psi which is in the range it should be, but I smoke to mechanics who specializes on them and they say they run better when compression is 450 to 500psi not to cheap to fix.

Tires

by (no login)

Check out the NOKIAN tires. I just installed a new set of Nokian WR-T 265/70-16 All-weather tires on my 2002 Sequoia. They are awesome on ice and snow. They carry the Severe Service Emblem required on tires when the "chain law" is in effect. They have Silica Compound which provides excellent grip on wet surfaces while maintaining winter properties, for harsh winter driving conditions.
They also have a unique Arrowhead tread pattern that very effectively expels eater, snow and slush while providing "uncomprised" lateral grip.
These tires are very quiet and smooth running on dry pavement at all speeds. Much more so than the OEM Dunlops.

HP

by Ken (no login)

I'm not sure re the petrol engine HP, but a 2.4 Litre EFI Turbo Diesel SURF (Forerunner) is rated at the following:
97hp@3800rpm
240NM@2400rpm
This is probably flywheel and not rear axel I bet.
Don't expect too much increase from the airfilter, even though flow bench testing may suggest otherwise.
If you don't do much off road work, you may consider a pod filter and assembly, and a decent retune.
The exhaust will be a definite improvement.
Best wishes.

Surf Books

by Ken (no login)

I have the Haynes Manual for 4 Runner 79 - 96 Diesel workshop manual.
Pretty much covers all bases and VERY close to Surf specs. It cost around $40 Aust, and you can get it at any Repco etc.
GENUINE Toyota repair manual for the Four Runner (SURF)is RM 158 E. This is as close as you'll get.
2L and 3L Engine Repair Manual is Toyota part # RM123E, dated Aug 1988.
The Repair Manual Suppliment for 2L-T, 3L is Toyota Part # RM169E, date 1990.

You should be able to get these from any decent Tojo dealer in Oz. I got mine from a dealer in NSW, near Richmond Air Force Base.

There is a photocopy of the turbo service list, but it's in Japanese, and obviously of next to no use.
I have it as well.
Hope this was of help.
Best wishes mate.

Vacuume Pump

by Ken (no login)

G'day.
The Vacuum pump sits on the rear of the alternator which drives it, so he most likely means the vacuum pump.
You must have lost brake vacuum pressure.

vacumme pump

by (no login)

I'm a third year apprentice auto electrician and i have a bit of experience with vac pumps on alternators. Depending on what model 4'runner u have will depend on what type of vac pump u have. The vac pump sits on the back or front of your alternator and is driven by a spline which is cut into the rotor of your alternator. I have seen this spline wear to the point where it no longer drives the pump which inturn gives no brake booster vacuum and a stiff peddel which leads to no brakes. (the vac pump on the back does it more than the one on the front) It usually takes about 250 - 300 k's before this happens.

Cruise Control

by Ken (no login)

I priced an aftermarket unit in Townsville recently(I surmise you are in Australia?)and was quoted over $600.
I haven't tried Toyota yet for geniune, but the cruise control for the Surf (4runner)has steering wheel mounted controls, so would involve replacing the wheel as well as all the extra wiring.
A fair bit of stuffing around to say the least.
If you find a decent unit, please let me know as well!
Best wishes.

Snorkel

by Ken (no login)

Well, I can now get over 520 kms per tank on the highway since fitting the snorkel.
Cold air / ram air effect or just braver running the vehicle dry before filling?
I don't know, but I think there is a slight improvement in fuel economy since the modification.

Best wishes everyone.

Diesel smoke

by Ken (no login)

Yep, I don't know of any 4 x 4 diesel that doesn't in Oz.
Our diesel blend is different to those overseas.
It's normal, as long as it's not exesive (ie, increased use of oil, poor fuel or long time since the injectors were serviced).
Best wishes.
