Usage of plastic materials for Surf exterior tuning

by (no login)

Dear Toyota SUV's ouners!!!
I'am the ouner of 92 Hilux Surf from Russia. I'll be much obliged to any one who will find it possible to help me clarify two questions:
1) Whether it is possible to mount intercooler to 2LT-E
engine.
2) Dreaming to make by myself some parts for exterior tuning of my Surf(made of plastic materials) . The reason why, is that such production is enormously expensive in Russia and I belive it's natural desire to give own style to own SUV. I'am surching for technology of making tuningparts like front and rear spoilers and etc. Or may be someone knows how to connect to Mr. Arno Klenkhart, who created Albaco Geo - showcar based on hi-lux pick-up platform and body made of plastic materials. I'am really mad about these ideas and'll be grateful for any information concerning mentioned above questions.

ART

by Ken (no login)

G'day Art, how's things in Russia?
Re the Intercooler.
Yes it is possible, however placement of the cooler unit is a big consideration as there's not much room under your bonnet.
You would have to fit an intake for the cooler unless it was mounted below the radiator or transmission cooler.
Lots of money, for not that big an improvement on a 2.4 motor I think.
Have a read through the archives and see what some of us have done to improve breathing, exhaust, boost and injector capabilities on the 2.4. easier to do and probably more productive HP wise.

Re the body modifications, this is beyond my experience sorry.

Best wishes from Oz.

Ken.

Late model Surfs

by Cherie (no login)

Hi Cath
just read your post so this may not be of use. We have a 91 2.4lt LTD surf have owned for 2yrs. have also just bought a 95 SSRX Ltd 3.0lt the new one is fantastic much zippier with less effort includes several features that 91 does not also seems to be more economical and less noisy so my advice is to go for it just make sure you buy from reputabls dealer or have checked out first

More legroom or shorter legs?

by Neil (no login)

Hi,

I recently got a 1990 2.4TD Surf here in the UK.
It's a great car, but I have a problem.

At 6'2" tall, there is such a lack of legroom (even with the seat all the way back), that I am developing a bad knee, due to the angle at which I have to push the clutch down.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have the seat move back further on the runners, or actually move the whole seat back?

I'm getting to the stage where i'm thinking of selling it, it's getting that bad! And I don't want to do that.

Any suggestions greatfully accepted - I suppose i could get an auto, but too expensive - must be a simple solution?!

Cheers,

Neil

Poly Air Springs

by Ken (no login)

G'day Mark.
My understanding is that the rear springs should be in good condition to begin with, to assist the Poly Airs (which slip inside the coils.
I just replaced my complete suspension with an ARB Nitro Charger system and springs today.
Good ride, not over firm at all, and I regained 6 cm in the back end.
Best wishes mate.

knock it off

by hunter (no login)

you have two choices, depending on where you live you could take it off permitting its not against the law or you could spend a hundred bucks for a high flow cat and about twenty to have it bolted on. taking it off would give you anywhere up to 20 HP, a high flow converter could bring you 10 or 15.

SURF Snorkel

Good deal, purchased and fitted for $430 Aussie sheckels. (Defence Force discount!!!)
I'll let the list know of any improvements in economy, performance etc. (Not holding my breath though.)
Induction noise is not noticable, and it doesn't interfere with vision at all.
The full Old Man Emu suspention kit from ARB ($760)is next to fix the 2 cm rear end sag.

Best wishes all.

Surf Work Shop manual

by Ken (no login)

I have the Haynes Manual for 4 Runner 79 - 96 Diesel workshop manual.
Pretty much covers all bases and VERY close to Surf specs. It cost around $40 Aust, and you can get it at any Repco etc.
GENUINE Toyota repair manual for the Four Runner (SURF)is RM 158 E. This is as close as you'll get.
2L and 3L Engine Repair Manual is Toyota part # RM123E, dated Aug 1988.
The Repair Manual Suppliment for 2L-T, 3L is Toyota Part # RM169E, date 1990.

You should be able to get these from any decent Tojo dealer in Oz. I got mine from a dealer in NSW, near Richmond Air Force Base.

There is a photocopy of the turbo service list, but it's in Japanese, and obviously of next to no use.
I have it as well.
Hope this was of help.
Best wishes mate.

3 inch exhaust?
How noisy is it?
I was advised by the exhaust blokes not to go above 2 1/4. I have a nice burble, but not obtrusive.
How are your boost mods going?
Any info on drivability, fuel economy etc would be apprieciated.
Re body kits etc, get just spares and 4 x 4 trader and you will see relevant dismantlers who may have Surf flares, rear spoiler etc.
These parts go fast though.
I was quoted over $800 for a genuine Tojo rear spoiler, plus paint and fitting.

"clunk" in the rear....that what she said

by (no login)

I'm new to this "Forum" thing so please hang with me.
I have a '95 4-Runner SR5, 3.0, manual trans. And my question to anyone out there is I get this nasty "clunk" noise when slowing down from 5th gear...for example, when exiting the freeway. If I deaccelerate slowly I don't hear it ("so exit slowly", you're all saying) but what is it. I've heard that the rear driveshaft has some "play" in it and that's what the noise is...hummm, just not sure of that. Maybe the universal joint? Any ideas? Oh yeah, one more thing...what does "surf" mean. A lot of people use it on this site next to their vehicle type.
Thanks, and Laters from Lost Wages..I mean, Las Vegas, NV.

surf

by pat (no login)

A Toyota Surf is very much a domestic (japan) 4 runner. Japan spec "Surfs" had a bit more nicer bells and whistles (options) than the U.S. & Australia models. Engine options for the 89-95 models are 3y (2000cc Gas), 3VZ (3000cc Gas V6), 2LTE (2400cc Diesel Turbo), 1KZTE (3000cc Diesel Turbo)

Surf does not mean anything other than a name that toyota chose for the domestic 4 runner.

I can only select LOW 4WD when in park or neutral and the vehicle stationary. If I try to select LOW 4WD in any other gear position, even with the vehicle stationary, I get gear crunching from within the transfer case. Is this ok, or is there some problem with the transfer case. I am puzzled as to how there is gear movement within the transfer case, when the vehicle is stationary. When selected Low 4WD works perfectly. Selecting High 4WD is ok on the move.

How to put your self through the windscreen in 1 easy lesson!

by Ken (no login)

Never try to shift from high to low while in motion.
Your Surf is not designed for this, and it places too much load on the transmission, and you may also end up through the windscreen due to sudden deceleration!
You can move into high range via the electronic actuator, but must stop, or be doing only a few kpm prior to moving into low.
I don't think you have a fault with your transfere box at all.

Best wishes.

what is ECT transmission?

by (no login)

I have a 95 4runner with automatic transmission. No one I've met can tell me what the ECT Transmission option is for. Does anyone here know? I've also looked on the web (thats how i found this site...).

Also, any harm in driving with Overdrive on all the time? What about driving with overdrive and ECT on or in any other combination?

feel free to email!

ECT

by stevo (no login)

Hi.
Apparently ECT stands for electronically controled trans,or something like that. It holds you in gear longer for towing or 4wd in quick terrain. Also as an aside, I've been reading about 400k per tank fuel consumption in forums, for city driving I'm getting 450k by winding back the fuel about 1mm at the throttle body and not using overdrive, which seems to "lock up" the torque converter. Anyone else?

Fuel Ecconomy

by Ken (no login)

G'day Stevo.
I get around 480 - 500 kms on my 2.4 Auto.
I've fitted a 2 1/4 inch mandrel bent exhaust and a Finer filter air cleaner.
I mainly do highway work, minimal stop start, and around 130kms per day.
ECU is turned off mostly and O?D is always on.
How's your injectors?
I wouldn't think anyone would have to play with their fuel settings unless the injectors were a bit sus.

Ken.

Fuel Economy

by Mark (no login)

Hi all, I've got a '92 2.4TD Auto and drive with the ECT button off and O/D on at all times unless towing. I then switch it on only after I'm at cruising speed. I've heard that putting the gearbox under load or accelarating at low speeds (but not enough to change down gears) can damage the O/D as it's not built to take the torque. I get around 420km's in town but have had over 520km's on a long run. I've had my injectors cleaned but run a standard pipe and air filter.

Regards

Mark

fuel economy #2

by Stevo (no login)

Hey Ken
Thanks for the response. I've had my injectors checked twice by 2 different blokes, they seem to be OK, I guess my issue is that I live in the Adelaide hills and drive to the plains almost everyday. I've experimented with highway speeds (30k per day) and think maybe 90k's gives me the best result. I turned back the fuel as a bit of an experiment 'cause there was a bit of dodgy tear on the adjust screw, maybe someone thought they knew what they were doing, and it worked out for me. I have yet to find someone who can confidently tell me how to tune this car, or that I trust 100% with surfs. Everyone has an opinion though, and I've heard some crazy stuff about "necessary" head mods and the like. What I would like to do is get it breathing a little easier, I've heard all sorts of stuff about mandrel bent pipes and hiclones, what do you reckon the go is?
Cheers. Stevo.

G'day Stevo.
Definatly fit a 2 1/4 Mandrel pipe.
I noticed a definite improvement in fuel ecconomy and the sound is nice, not obtrusive.
The finer filter has vastly improved air flow, but I don't think I noticed any improvement in power etc. I'd still fit one.
Hyclones, we I wouldn't fit one at all.
What help can a vortex of air be after it's dispersed via the injectors (see previous posts in the archives.)
I've spoken at length with RAAF engineers re these, and they can't explain how they could be benifitial on an injected vehicle of any type.
Yes for an old carby vehicle, but not on EFI gear.
There is a fella in QLD who specialises in fitting new injectors, and playing with the boost (14 LB ?) which is said to provide 30% more power, and not effect longevity (it's within the engines design parameter) so I plan to sus him out at some time.
Any REALLY competant deisel engineer should be able to do this though, just he's done a few apparently.
Best wishes mate.

O?D ECT et al!

by Ken (no login)

G'day David.
ECT = Electronic Controlled Transmission.
The ECT setting will only change your shift pattern to give you more "traffic friendly" acceleration.
It won't damage your vehicle at all, but will effect your fuel economy, depending on how hard you drive the vehicle, city cycle etc.
I seldom use mine as I mainly do highway driving as I live in the bush.
Re Overdrive, I recommend you leave it on at all times, unless you need to "kick back" a gear when overtaking. Give your self plenty of room, switch the O?D off, listen to your engine screem and overtake. You won't be able to get any thurther acceleration from the vehicle.
Always reengage the O/D when cruising, otherwise you'll find your self constantly in third grear only as your top gear.
(Auto box)
Best wishes.

Ken.

94 Surf dumping oil

by (no login)

Hi all,

I have a 94 surf, 3.0L Tubo diesel auto. I have had it for about 6 months now and I just noticed the other day that when I put my foot flat on the accelerator, she dumps a shit lot of oil as I get a huge puff of black smoke. I never see the problem under normal driving circumstances, its only when I put my foot flat. It also makes a strange vibrating noise when this happens. I am taking it to a mechanic next week but was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

Cheers.

black smoke is ok

by Stevo (no login)

Dude.
Your blowing smoke 'cause a deisel engine wont burn everything you feed it like a petrol. You'll always get smoke at take off and under load. The noise is probably tappets, judging by your note I guess you don't do a lot of your own work? Blue smoke is your only problem. If you feel it is excessive you can roll the fuel back at the throttle body, get the injectors cleaned, or modify your driving to accommate the type of engine you are using. That is, gradual acceleration. You just waste unburnt fuel by putting your foot down. I hope this helps, I thought my surf was smokey as well, I did the above, now I don't.

When is the 4Rnr to be redesigned?

by jsboxer (no login)

Wouldn't a 2003 model come out in August 2002? Also does your reply mean a new model year or a REDESIGNED model for that year?

4wd probs

by (no login)

Hi all, I'm new to this forum so please bear with me. I had to fix the universal joint at the axle end of my driveshaft last week. Now before I fixed it , I had run my truck (90 Surf SSR Ltd. TD) in 4wd and because the shaft was slack it wouldn't disengage. It eventually did and now it won't engage at all. When I push the button there are no clicks that you usually hear. I wonder if any of you folks ever had this problem and how you fixed it. I think it may be some sort of electronic protection that needs resetting or a fuse/relay replaced but I don't know. any advise would be appreciated greatly!!
Sorry for the long post, but I'm an Irishman and we like to tell long stories!!!

Surf Manual

by Ken (no login)

I have the Haynes Manual for 4 Runner 79 - 96 Diesel workshop manual.
Pretty much covers all bases and VERY close to Surf specs.
It cost around $40 Aust, and you can get it at any Repco etc (or I surmise any Irish equivelant).
GENUINE Toyota repair manual for the Four Runner is RM 158 E. Probably as close as you'll get.
Just have a look through the archives as there's lots of answers to questions you may have.
Best wishes.

Sorry to hear about your car mate.
Hope they get the parasites. With any luck they'll find the car on the side of the road if you didn't fix the overheating problem!

Best wishes from Oz.
