Hilux double cab

by (no login)

I've been driving the Hilux double cab for quite a few years in Africa. They first imported them from Japan in '87 and started producing them in South Africa in '88, by my understanding. I could be wrong about that.

In '99, South Africa began producing what is known as the "Tacoma" in North America. They still call it the Hilux. They build the reg. cab and dual cabs there, but don't build the ext. cab, unless that has changed in the last couple of years. Currently in North America, all three models are available, which are called the Tacoma of course. They are new to NA, so they may be difficult to find. I live in Houston at the moment and they are fairly available here.

I could get more specific about the differences to my knowledge if you'd like, but yes, look for the Tacoma dual-cab in North America.

96 Hilux Surf with the PRADO engine

by (no login)

I recently bought a 1996 Surf with the 1KZ-TE 3L intercooled turbo diesel engine. Quite a beast it is!! and I'm enjoying every minute of it. But It came without an owner manual and it has a navigation system that I can't even understand. it's located just beneath the rear view mirror. I bought it froma Japanese domestic dealer so all the writing is in Japanese....I need help. I live in Jamaica.

92 4Runner cosmetics...

by (no login)

Hi all. I'm looking for the rear wing/rear air deflector which was standard equipment on the Sequoia edition 4Runner (94 & 95, I think). Unlike the metal or smoked plexi air deflector which was standard equipment, this was a body-coloured rear wing which extended rearward from the roofline and incorporated a 3rd brakelight. Now, my dealer says that such an item was most certainly aftermarket, but I can't find it for the life of me (Jaos doesn't offer it, neither does TRD or Performance Products). Does anyone know where I can find one?
Also, I have seen some overseas 2nd Generation (90-95) 4Runners (Hilux Surfs?) equipped with a tail-light cluster which includes the backup lights (instead of the backups being located in the tailgate). I thought they might have been swapped with the tail-lights of the 4WD Toyota truck, but that's not the case. Does anyone know which market offered such a lighting configuration on the 4Runner/Surf? I am currently installing a rear tire/gear carrier which obscures almost the entire tailgate, so I need to relocate by reverse lights to the rear corners of my rig. Thanks! morgan@dowco.com

It's pretty easy to do. there are 3 screws behind the ash try (two up top, and 1 in the back, The plate that has the ac controls on it, should pop right off and then there are two screws behide that, then that hole pannel should pop off.
The door speakers are 6 1/2 speakers.
the door panal pops off once you take off the arm rest and unscrew the door latch.
good luck

4 Runner overheating

by (no login)

I have a 95 4 runner. It began to overheat, and I replaced the thermostat and water pump. It still overheats, and it has a weird symptom. Sometimes the AC works. When it works, the aux fan in front of the condensor turns on. Ok..it won't overheat. But sometimes the fan doesn't turn on. When this happens, the AC doesn't work and it overheats. Any ideas? Is there some type of sensor that runs this fan?

the aux fan in the front has a temp sensor on it. this is what kicks it off to begin with. you may consider replacing this fan. flush your radiator too. it's part of your cooling system too. good luck

Well I heard the new models have a greater tire clearance maybe I'm wrong. I would go 15 and put some big ass tires on your truck. Turn the wheel all the way left or right and have some one put some weight on that side to see if in will rub.

by (no login)

you might experience some rubbing on larger wheels. i have 18 by 9 inch axis vortex wheels and 265-60-18 tires on my 1996 sr-5. the only problem was rubbing behind the drivers front wheel on the front part of the bushwacker running board end cap. otherwise, the whole install has been bulletproof. i just need to trim some of the inner portion of the end cap and everything should be fine. i should point out that only the one side rubs when the wheel is turned to the extreme left.

sequia or land cruiser

by kit (no login)

sequia cost at mid 40 grand the land cruiser cost at around 70 grand depending on your local showroom "con artist". if you got the doe. i'd rather choose the land cruiser. it is proven around the world, including south pole(some research scientist used them.)and the 2000 paris-dakar rally(stock/non modified class.).

Choose the Landcruiser

by Mike (no login)

I pondered the very same issue around the time the Sequoia was announced, Toyota gave me marginal information. I drove both, many times. The price difference of a new vehicle was large. I chose a 1999 Landcruiser for the same price as a new Sequoia. It is a great truck, the best on the market. I will own this truck for over ten years. I made the right choice.

Sequoia

by (no login)

I want to know what you look for in an SUV. If you want a good price and good expectations, go with a Sequoia. I was planning to get one but my budget is too short and I currently have a 2000 4Runner. All Toyota vehicles are great so the choice between Sequoia and Land Cruiser is yours. But note that you can save at $15,000 if you go with the Sequoia. And I meant the Limited Edition.

If price is not an issue then go with the Land Cruiser (the best Suv on the planet). If money is any issue go with the Sequia, alot of people don't know that even though it is priced less than the Land Cruiser it actually is bigger.

by (no login)

Your right! people think Land Cruiser is bigger just because it's expensive, but Sequoia is actually Toyota's biggest SUV that costs a lot less than a Land Cruiser. Land Cruiser, is mainly built for comfort and luxury which makes it the world but Sequoia may be a more practical way of owning a luxury SUV. I have a Sequoia SR5 with all the upgrades and I'm a very proud owner
, but cannot afford a Landcruiser...

Hey if you guys are still needing exhaust you might try a place like Performance Products and look at there Jardine or Borla kits.Sure they might be a bit pricey but the saying "you get what you pay for" is very true I think. I have a 2 Borla kits one on a '94 SR5 4x4 and 1 on a '96 4Runner that also has a supercharger and K & N intake and filter..Both kits offered good fit, sound, and performance (more noticed on the '96)..Good Luck...PS Jardine kit looked pretty nice also and it was a bit cheaper

Hilux Surf 2L-T engine

by (no login)

I have a 1990 Surf Model in Australia.
At about 80.000 km head gasket and turbo leaked and cracks in cylinder head. I got a low mileage replacement engine. After 800km's driving head gasket leaked and cracks in cylinder head. Another replacement cylinder head ordered -> received with cracks.

A new cylinder head ordered -> got the information that they order those parts currently in pallet quantity from Japan.

An inquiry at Toyota Customer Service about this matter was responded "very friendly" : This car and this motor is of no interest to us because it is a grey import to Australia.

Does anyone know anything more specific about this problem ?

Just stick your head where your feet go and look up. You should see a Daytime RunningLights Relay Box. Locate a black wire with a yellow stripe. The dealership calls it a Yellow Tracer. (NOT VISE VERSA, VERY IMPORTANT!!) Cut the wire and tape it up with electrical tape, but do it in a maner where it can be re-attached. I just did it on my 2001 SR5. Trust me.

Squeak under the hood?

I have a 91' 4runner 4x4. I've noticed it has a squeak - kind of like a belt.. light and annoying. When I push the clutch in, it goes away. I'd like to know how to fix this squeaking. It's not my belts as I checked for tightness and added belt dressing (to no avail). Any info on this would be very helpful. Please email me with your fix.

late entry--yes it can be done

by tony (no login)

but it will be extremely expensive. i purchased the entire limited flares and cladding kit(along with countless clips, screws and other hardware) and it was in excess of $2,000 and thats not including the cost of having a body shop install the whole kit.

in the meantime, i had bushwacker fender flares(flares only--not the cladding kit) installed. for a more professional look, i had the flares, running boards and bumpers painted toyota silver.

bushwacker has a limited-look flare/cladding kit, but you will have to see if it has the look you are looking for. plus it will be a whole lot cheaper to have installed than the toyota limited cladding and flares.

I read with great interest the article under Products about installing the CSD fog/spots on a 1996 4runner. The install looks super clean. I purchased the CSD's and have a few questions about the installation.
1. What kind of brackets were used to install the lights. I see a hole in the bottom of the bumper, but it would leave the lights protruding too far, not like the flush installation in the photograph.
2. How much of the bumper valance was cut so the lights would fit?
3. What wire was tapped under the dash for the 12 volts to the power switch. I'd like to tap the parking lights but how do I find the right wire?

Thanks in advance for your help.

locking diffs

by ry (no login)

a locking diff is essential for wheelin' but a full locker such as a detroit locker or an ARB air-locker is essential for hard-core rock crawling or anything involving having to articulate to your vehicles max. potential.

body lift/suspension lift

by Barry (no login)

hey guys...any answers/help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2000 Sport Package 4-runner(hood scoop)
I'm gonna get a 3 inch body lift soon.
There's no available suspension kit right now for the 2000 runner...
What I want to know is....do I need to get the suspension lift also? Would it help for offroading?
Or the body lift is enough since the 4-runner already has good clearance?
Thanks!

RE: 4Runner Lift Kit

by (no login)

I am writing to find out where you were able to find a lift kit for your 2000 4Runner. I would also like to put a 2-3 inch lift kit on mine, but I can't find one.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kelly

Kelly,
I don't thiink there's a suspension kit out yet for the 2000.....I want to get it too.....honestly though....I don't even think this truck needs a lift!...the ground clearance is amazing as is......unless your gonna get bigger tires, I wouldn't get the lift.

lift

by Robert (no login)

Cornfeds are supposed to be a good lift. He told me he has them for the 1998 4Runner and I am sure he has lifts for all years available.

I can answer you with one word....SUPERCHARGER.
OK I need a few more words, I put one on a '96 and now you can outrun nearly anything on the street..I even dragged a Saleen drop top the other day and stayed right with him. Only other motor options are a K & N fitercharger kit and filter and a Borla exhaust kit
