4Runner A/C Problems

by (no login)

I own a 1995 4Runner SR5,2WD (186,000mi). The vehicle has been great but recently has developed an A/C problem. The A/C stops blowing cold after a short time as if it is "freezing up". After experimenting a bit, I've discovered the A/C will blow cold longer when in the recirculating setting rather than the fresh air setting. Can anyone help me with this problem?

if the weather is to hot, it will not blow cold because it is try to cool the hot air that is comming in the vehicle. put it on refresh and after it is cool, put it on recycle so that is will take in the cool air from the inside insteak of the outside air.

Re: 4Runner A/C Problems

by jim iteachase@verizon.net (no login)

Two conditions can cause this, The thermostatic cycling switch (or low pressure cycling switch) is responsible for defrosting the evaporator whenever evap temps fall below 32 degrees... if the system will not cycle..the evaporator will freeze up and restrict airflow and cooling. Also.. if moisture is contaminating the refrigerant, this can cause intermittant freezing of the TXV (thermostatic expansion valve) this would starve the evaporator of refrigerant.

95 4runner parts: need chrome factory wheels, hood w/ vent

by (no login)

hey...
I'm looking for a set of chrome Landcruiser wheels that would fit my 1995 4runner. Preferable the 16" (6-lug) 5-spoke style I've seen on the 1996-1998 model cruisers. The 5-spoke 98-up 5-spoke 4runner model (6-lug) in chrome is also a set I'd like to own.

Also if anyone knows where I can find the Highlander style hood w/ scoop vent for my 4runner. I don't know if it is available, however I have seen pictures of a 4runner (92-95) with that tough hood. Let me know.

One more: that little cool-ass blind spot mirror for the left side that mounts on top of the fender for a U.S. 4runner.

Please help with1994 FJ80 front speaker upgrade

by (no login)

I bought some high quality audio equipment for my newly acquired 1994 FJ80: Nakamichi CD / Receiver, DEI 6500 amp, Infinity Kappa 10" sub-woofer, Infinity Kappa 4" co-ax for rear doors, CD Tech 5.25" + tweeter components for front doors.

However, the 5.25" CD Tech mid-range speaker is too deep for the factory front door location.

Apparently Toyota recommend using a speaker with only 1 5/8" depth; factory hole will accommodate up to 6.5" diameter speaker.

If anyone has experience with speakers that sound great and fit the factory location or require only minor modification, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

New wheels and Tires

by (no login)

I have a 96' limited and I am interested in new tires and wheels. I am unsure about tire size? I have seen a Tahoe with 33x12.50R15 and it looked really good. My question is will this size fit on a 4-Runner without having to use a lift kit?? I don't want to use a lift kit, but I want the exact wheels and tires that I have seen on the Tahoe.

33's on stock runner

by (no login)

it's impossible to fit 33x12.50R15 on a stock 4Runner without a lift. i have a 98 4Runner with stock rims running an estimated size of 32x10.50R16 BFG AT. this size tires on a stock truck is ok if you don't do much 4wheeling. at full crank over bumps these tires rub the inner fender well. we had just lifted a 96' Tacoma running the same size you're inquiring about (33x12.50R15). we installed a Trail Master 6" lift on it using the stock coils and shocks up front and it still rubbed the inner fender. we also had to cut a piece of the front spoiler to clear the tires. because the stock spring and shocks are too soft we replaced them with rancho and that pretty much cured the rubbing of the inner fender well. i would assume that the problem would be similar to a 4runner due to the same front suspension setup if not worse. i myself want to run bigger tires and rims but no company i know of came out with any type of lift to fit similar tire size that you want. hope this help you out a little.

Seqouia vs 4runner

by (no login)

With the recent announcement and display of the Sequoia, there has not been much commented on the 2001 4Runner. We all know that the spyshots we saw in the past months are confirmed as the Sequoia.

But what about the Runner? We speculate that a change is emminent, but where is the evidence? It's April already! I am on my 3rd Runner, a 97 leased new, and with lease about to expire (Sept), I want to wait until the 2001 is released. But are there going to be real changes or just cosmetic for one more year? Personally speaking, I dont think Toyota would come out with two NEW sport utes in the same year....not good for marketing. Help?

4th Generation 4Runner

by (no login)

2001 will be a carry over year for the 4Runner, basically same as 2000. The next generation will be out fall of 2001 as a 2002. It will be off the Tacoma platform and built at the NUMMI plant in CA. Rumors have it the 4Runner will move down market to the Xterra class while the new Highlander built off the RX300 platform will take the higher market now occupied by the SR5 and Limited 4Runners. It will also be introduced in 2001 as a 2002.

Hope Toyota is looking at the upgraded Nissan Pathfinder. The engine they have is now 240 HP and 265 ft-lbs of torque. The new 4Runner needs more punch against the competition.

4th Gen 4Runner

by (no login)

I seem to remember in one of my back issues of Autoweek(3/99) there was a pic of a disguised 2002 4Runner captured ruuning around. The caption did go on to state that the 4Runner was being widened to compete with the Ford Explorer. If that is true then the new 4th Gen 4Runner should be in the 85 to 90 cu. ft. class. The Landcruiser is currently in the 95 to 100 cu. ft. class. The new Sequoia from the web page info shows it to be in the Expedition class(105-110 cu. ft.) The new Highlander is a car based SUV along the lines of the Lexus RX300. The dimensions given indicate a Toyota division copy of the RX300(75-80 cu. ft.). As far as the 4Runner moving downmarket to compete with the Nissan Xterra(60-70 cu. ft.), I think the new RAV4 should be able to this if it had a V-6. One my Autoweek issues show the Toyota division as having 5 SUV's(2-Car based, 3-Truck based). I think the more important concern is the power rating of the 4th Gen 4Runner engine. Nissan is strutting their new V6 out in all their ads saying their V6 is more powerful than their competitors V8's(240 Hp/265 ft-lbs torque)specifically any Toyota/Lexus V8's. Sounds like a good time to drop VVT-i in the V6 and V8 and/or better yet introduce a new VVT-i V6(3.5L-250 Hp/270 ft-lbs.) and V8(5.4L-350 Hp/400 ft-lbs). Throw in some TRD options for more and you can start signing up the buyers as we speak!!!!!

But what about the manual transmission

by scott (no login)

I've heard/seen rumors that future generations of the 4Runner will no longer have a manual transmission. Anybody else have any input on this? This is a serious travesty if you ask me, especially for those of us who do actually take our Runners off the pavement (a decidedly smaller and smaller segment each year probably but no manual at all!??!?! That SUCKS!!!)

5 SUV's from Toyota

by (no login)

According to Car and Driver Television last week, Toyota unveiled 5 SUV's at an auto show: The RAV4, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, the new Sequoia, and the new Highlander. The Highlander is the Toyota-badged replacement of the Lexus RX300. The limited view of the Highlander appeared to look like a tall wagon. I believe it will be on a car-based frame like the current RX300. According to Toyota of Reno, Toyota will bring out a new (or updated?) model every 6 months for the next 2 years. I would expect the next generation of 4Runner to be out in 2001.

You're probably right

by Ryan (no login)

Regarding new 4-runner styling etc.
I have a 99 4runner myself and keep an eye out as I'm sure most of us do. Anyway, I work for a large steel company in chicago that supplies much of toyota's parts and I(as a design engineer) learn of changes in steel grades which normally results from changes in styling/strength.

Anyway, suffice it to say that we have not seen much change on the 4runner untill the '03 model year.

Sequia on the other hand gets alot of attention

"Highlander"

by (no login)

I just heard from my local dealer that within the next 12-18 months Toyota will be selling an SUV unofficially known as the "Highlander". The dealer said it would be like a high-roofed Camry wagon crossed with the Lexus RX-300.

This may be why the RAV4 is not geting a V6 engine.

Someone else out there must have some spy pix or other info... anyone???

help with 4runner prices

ive heard that a new 4runner is coming out in october i was wondering if this is true and also will this cause the 4runner price go down. at the moment i am lookin for a 95 toyota 4runner but the price is a little bit higher than i would expect for a 5 year old car. what price should i be looking for in a 95 4runner in average and how do u think the price will adjust when the 4runner- 4 series comes out. also do u think it would be wise to wait for the new runners to come out and see what the prices will do??

More Power 2.7 L 4cyl

by (no login)

On my 98 2.7L I installed a Borla Stainless Steel Exhaust and a K & N GEN II Air Filter System. I know there's a company that makes headers for them too. Runs great. Almost as much power as the 6 cyl now. I could pull my fishing boat no problem. I just use a little less gas than the 6cyl. These mods will consume more gas.

Try a supercharger...

by (no login)

TRD makes them now. They wil set you back about 3 grand, but will produce about 50 more horses than the stock motor.

Also, DO NOT use K&N air filters. You might as well be using a single sheet of toilet tissue. If you want a REAL performance filter with great airflow AND filtering capability for HALF the cost of TRD or K&N, then order an AMSOIL. It will give you about a 3-5 hp boost too!

Auto door locks/theft deterent on 2000 4runner Limited...do they lock automatically?

by (no login)

Hello,

I just got a 2000 4runner limited with all the toys in it. The only thing is I know nothing as far as the theft detterent system is cocenred. THat is I have the basic Limited system. My question is this... After I get out of the car, the car DOES NOT lock the doors automatically after 30 secs or so like my lexus does for example. However, if you hit unlock and do nothing and wait for 30 secs the doors will relock automatically... so is this how it is suppose to be or after to close the doors the system should auto lock them as well? or do I need the suped up Plus security to have that?

please EMAIL me if you can as well...

4runner inquiry

by (no login)

Alex,

I was looking online for a grill guard for my 2000 4runner and I ran across your inquiry about the theft deterent system. I thought I would tell you what I know.

It is not suppose to lock the doors after you exit. This would be a hazard if you were to accidently leave your keys in the car and shut the door. It only looks after 30 seconds if you unlock it, but never open the doors.

I installed a crime stopper paging alarm system on my that is awesome!! It pages you if anything happens to your 4runner! If you are interested I can email you the details.

Also, do you know where is a good place to find a grill guard?

I don't know where the fuse is, but I believe the lighters have a fusible link close to the lighter itself. You may need to get that part of the dash loose so you can check if power is coming to the lighter. You are not trying it with the ignition off are you? Ed

Are you sure it is the fuse and not the motor that is the problem? On my 1998 4Runner there is a fuse for the rear window motor located in the engine compartment (fuse box is behind the battery). When the large fuse marked AM1, which is a 40A, is blown it will kill the rear power window. This fuse is located at the top of the second column of fuses, it is not one of the small colored fuses, it is the square-type with the plastic window on top. If you remove this fuse, try to pull it straight up, it is kind of long. This is the only fuse that I know that controls the rear window motor. But, it controls most of the interior accesories, so if just the rear window wont work, it may not be this fuse causing your problem.
Good Luck.

rear power window

by (no login)

I had a problem with my 1991 Hilux rear power window. If your rear window has a windshield wiper check to make sure it is all the way locked when not in use. The 4runners made a safety device on the window for the wiper. it wont go down or up if it is not mated with the switch.

'90 4runner FOR SALE

by (no login)

This truck is near perfect. Over the past couple of years I've put over 4,000 dollars worth of parts and labor into restoring it to original condition. It is a rare 2WD model, so on-road performance is much better than the heavier 4*4's. Its forest green, with grey/green int. There are minor blimishes on the paint, but it looks great! The interior is absolutely flawless, and I installed a very nice Kenwood sound system.it has 208,000 miles on the odo, but it runs like new, thanks to the rebuilds and new components. i'm asking 8,400 dollars, but a reasonable offer would be considered. I wish I could keep it, but higher powers are forcing me to go 'fuel-efficient'! E-mail me for more info. I'm in Auburn or Mobile, AL. (334)502-4195. thanks

mileage capability question

by (no login)

I have been looking for an older 4-runner and have found one with 151000 miles. I was simply curious what type of repairs come into play with this kind of mileage. I thought you might be a good person to ask since your truck has over 200000 miles. I am also interested in knowing the average "life expectancy" of a 4-Runner engine.

Thanks so much for you time!

need some advice.....

by (no login)

I'm looking into buying this '91 4Runner 2 door v6
5 spd. Does anyone know of any problems or concerns with that year and model, other than the head gasket recall? Also, if anyone has any tips, I'd appreciate it. This will be my first 'runner.

Thanks,
Darren

re:tow hooks

by (no login)

I found a place that sells tow hooks in Four Wheeler Magazine. They are 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers in Texas, Colorado, and Florida. The phone number is 1.800.421.1050. The hooks they advertise should be generic and hopefully fit the 4Runner, they are $5.95 each. I haven't checked out Toyota for this item, I have a factory tow hook on my truck ('84 4X4 Toyota) that looks like it could fit on my '98 4Runner. I don't know what year your 4Runner is but compare the same year of truck/Tacoma to see if their hooks will fit. Toyota parts would definitely be the best. Also, JC Whitney, Carparts.Com, and Wrenchead.Com sometimes have some generic stuff that could work for Toyotas. Good luck and leave a post on this site if you come up with anything.

BUYER BEWARE OF NR AUTO!!!

by (no login)

For 1999 4Runner owners ONLY!!! (NOT 1996-1998!!!):

Recently I called NR Auto and my call was handled by the owner himself (who shall remain nameless). During this presale call, the owner assured me that the "Toyota 4 Runner '96+" white face gauge kit would fit with a little modification. He told me that I'd have to purchase a punch to punch a few minor holes and do some cutting.

When I received the kit, they looked like the stock faces with the exception of the speedometer/odometer hole. Remember, the owner gave me his word that the gauges would look and fit a 99 4Runner.

After noticing this, I decided to call the company. I asked for the owner himself but he didnt give me a call back that day. I called the following day and asked to speak with a representative of the company. The guy who answered the phone said that the owner has you on his call list and would call you back.

(This is where I made my mistake---i shouldve just stopped here but I stuck with the owner's guarantee)

I disassembled my instrument cluster and took off the stock plates. When I compared the stock plates to the new white face gauges, I realized that there was more cutting and hole punching than he claimed. For example on the speedometer, the '99 holes are below the needle axle. On the NR gauges, they are cut out for the 96-98 gauges. Why would an owner/company sell such a product? (Read on, you'll enjoy the answer)

So after making a number of cuts and holes (it took about 1 hour), I installed them on the cluster. I took it to my car and turned on the lights. I couldn't believe what I saw. The icons were all mismatched. For example on the left gauge (engine temperature), the bottom icon should be a seat belt warning light. Instead, it is the cruise control light. Can you imagine everytime you turn on your car, you see a blinking cruise control light?

So I immediately took them out and put the stock plates back in. I called the company to complain about the gauges. The owner answered the phone and to make a long story short, he said that if I made any cuts in them, I couldnt get a refund. I was amazed by the response: this is the same person who told me that I would have to buy a punch to make cuts! I also inquired about the mismatched icons. He said that I should have examined them before cutting into them. He said there wasnt much that he could do at this point given that I made cuts into them. He said he didn't have much time to discuss this further, so he said he'd call me back that day. He didn't.

So naturally I called my credit card company to dispute/hold the charge. I immediately faxed a letter to the owner stating that I did so, and that if I didnt get a refund, I'd pursue it with the BBB and the Attorney General's office.

I get a call the following day and this time the owner has more than a few words to say. He goes on and on about the reputation of his company, how his sales are growing b/c of their products, etc. (obviously he forgot about customer service). Some other incredulous things he said was:

- that he never spoke with me but an employee of his did (name withheld)
- that i was told during the presale that the gauge icons were not matched to 99 4Runners (if so, why would anyone buy them?)
- that i shouldve inspected them thoroughly (he's right, but i tend to believe the company president when he guarantees a product)
- that his web vendor is busy and didnt have time to fix the "misprint" for his website's advertisement for "96+ 4Runners" to '96-'98 (so NOW he admits that they are for the '96-98s, not the '99s)

One statement he made to me that still irritates me is this: He claims that there are a small number of 99 4runner owners who purchased the gauges but wanted the white face gauges so much that they were willing to put up with the mismatched icons.

Can you believe that?

In short, I'm still going to use the credit card company to deal with him. I'll keep you all posted as to the outcome. While there is nothing wrong, quality wise, with the gauges and I'm certain that these gauges will fit a 96-98 4Runner, but for you 99 4Runner owners out there, dont believe this guy when he says they will fit.

And take note of the type of customer service I received.
