Synthetic oilby Dale (no login)Hey folks, Some quick questions for you- all advice will be appreciated. I have a 98 SR5 4-runner with 21K miles. I'm moving to Syracuse NY from the south and have decided to use synthetic oil in my truck. What viscosity should I use for the cold upstate NY winters and how often should I change my oil? from IP address 128.143.3.124 |
Use something lighter!by (no login)I use 10W-30 out here in CA, but if its going to be cold, I'd consider going to 5W-30, Mobil 1 makes a 5W-30, and incidentally makes a synthetic paper oil filter too (that costs $10!). KEN from IP address 216.102.92.131 |
What iol viscosity to useby (no login)In New York or California, you should use the recommended viscosity from the maufacturer. In this case it calls for 5w30. A synthetic is more forgiving, whether it's cold or very hot weather.I use 0w30 year round and for the whole year. I've been in Texas during the summer and I've been in Canada during the winter. My engine in my 4runner doesn't know the difference. The temperature gauge stays the same. It fires up just as easy in the cold as it does in the heat. Lou from IP address 148.179.193.36 |
auto security systemby (no login)I have a '96 4 runner limited. I have been having trouble with the security system, but have no manual as to how it is supposed to work. There does not seem to be anything on the security system in the standard issue manual which I have. The local Toyota dealer cannot seem to help me. Does anyone have any advice on this? Thanks from IP address 216.26.32.94 |
Try a local shopby (no login)Try taking it to your local car audio/security shop . Often their guys are much more knowledgeable than the people at the Toyota Dealer. That happened to me once. I ended up taking my truck to an outside shop. Good luck from IP address 216.102.92.131 |
Downsizing 4-Runner wheels & tiresby (no login)The spouse and I (short people) are considering a good deal on an exceptionally clean low-milage 1996 SR-5. It is very well equipped, including 16-inch alloy wheels & big tires. Ah, there's the rub. I'm afraid we would tire (pun intended) rather quickly of clambering in and out of such a highrise vehicle. Question: Is it a big deal to swap tires and wheels? Expensive? Any changes required in suspension or speedometer? What are standard tires/wheels? All responses, suggestions, references appreciated. Even short jokes. Thanks. from IP address 206.96.193.122 |
Smaller wheels won't clear brakesby (no login)If the truck is equipped with 16 inch wheels from the factory then it has larger front disc brakes. The larger brakes won't clear smaller wheels. Ron My Web Page: http//members.gcronline.com/rsherow/ from IP address 208.249.71.221 |
Lowering a 4-Runnerby (no login)Thanks, Ron. If smaller wheels are out, how about smaller tires on the same wheels? Present tires are P265-70R-16. Could these be replaced with, say, 235-60R-16(assuming there is such a thing)? Would this mess up anything but the speedometer? And how big a deal is it to recalibrate a speedometer? Thanks again. from IP address 206.96.193.122 |
Lowering Springsby (no login)I don't know what effect smaller tires would have on other than the speedo. The speedo is not that hard to rest, but I have been told significant changes in diameter can screw up the ABS. Peformance Products sells 1 inch lowering springs. Ron from IP address 208.202.163.68 |

99 4Runner gas tank problemsby (no login)I have a 99 4Runner 2WD and everytime I go to fill up with gas, the auto shutoff on the gas pump nozzle stops the pump about 4 gals from a full tank. Gas tankby (no login)I've noticed the same thing with my 99 4runner. I don't know why this is the case. The gas nozzle cuts off when there's about 2-3 gallons left and I end up topping it off bit by bit. Have you discussed about this with your dealer? transmision problemsby (no login)I recently bought a 91 4runner which I really love, but I am having problems with my auto tranny. It is heating up when driven at 70 mph, the a/t oil temp light will turn on, I can feel it on my leg, and i feel that it is not performing right. I don't have any previous experience with this a340h tranny or the 3.0 V6 engine, but I dont believe it can't go faster than 80mph. In order to go faster than 75mph I have to really step on it and it will shift down which would heat it up even faster. The engine is not smoking, the transmision has just been changed its oil (to synthetic) and strainer, so I would appreciate any help on diagnosing this problem, I'm in Mexico, I'm a Doctor... '95 4Runner Transmission Serviceby (no login)I have a 1995 4Runner SR5 V6, 2WD. I do some maintenance service myself and enjoy taking care of my vehicle a lot. But for major Serive intervals I go to Toyota Dealers. Recently I did the "Transmission Saver" at a Dealer which is 100% flusing of the transmission fluid (including the Torque Converter). My vehicle is at 44,300 miles. I got permission from the Service Manager to watch the work. The flushing went OK. He first removed the fluid by unplugging the drain bolt. They used a special high pressure device which flushed the old fluid out and replaced with new. But the mechanic did not open the transmission cover to replace the strainer (filter) or the gasket. I asked him but he said removal of the gasket is necessary only when there is a leak and it is not necessary to change the strainer. This is supposed to be a Major Transmission Service costing $109.00. Should they not have replaced these items? Or is it not necessary to change the strainer? Looking forward to some advise regarding this. from IP address 208.237.197.45 |
Transmission Service.by (no login)G'Day Michael I wouldn't agree with this guy and if it supposed to have been a major service I would hate to hear what their minor service consisted of, checking the oil level!!! For its first service I would have expected them to have dropped the pan and cleaned the screen etc. I don't believe this is necessary on a regular basis unless you have reason to believe you may have contamination present in the trannie oil, eg slipping clutches etc. All you really got for your dollars was an oil change. It is common for instance that using synthetic oil in an auto is known as fill and forget, as the oil will really last for the life of the trannie, unless you fry your clutches etc. However, we all like to do a few changes for that reassurance factor and if you do a lot of heavy wheeling, it can't hurt. What they did would not have flushed the entire trannie as it doesn't flush the torque converter. You need to run the engine for a few seconds to drain the converter as much as possible. But really nothing to worry about Mate as unless the trannie oil is really discoloured its not of concern. JD http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jonhel5/ HO 4Runner from IP address 203.108.224.76 |
Airbladders For The Rear Coils From Downeyby (no login)I own a '94 4 Runner and was told by the tech crew at the local Dick Cepek shop that a great cure for the rear end sag on my 4 Runner is to install an airbladder in my rear coils. Downy makes the product and it sells for about $159. I was told that it has an air compressor that is controlled from the cab and can increase the lift as much as 2.5". Ticking noise from 3VZ-E V6by (no login)Hello. I own a 1990 Toyota 4Runner SR-5 V6. Acouple of days ago, I started hearing this loud ticking noise coming from the engine. I've checked everything and I have no clue. It's not a knock like a rod knock, it's tick like a valve tick but it's not the valves. The tick paces with the engine. It seems to be coming from the right side of the engine and sometimes it's quite loud, while sometimes it's quiet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!. from IP address 4.12.103.100 |
Ticking noise from 3.0 V-6by (no login)My 92 4- Runner had the same thing. I only have 58,000 miles on it. What I found was loose bolts where the exaust manifold bolts to either the cross over pipe & or also where the main exaust pipe bolts to the whole cross over assembly. If these bolts are loose you will hear the valve or tappet noise that comes from the engine when it is revved up or down. They are kind of hard to get to. But I took mine to a garage it has been the best $50.00 I have spent on this to just get the bolts retightned because the gasket is most likley still good. Anyway that fixed my engine noise! from IP address 159.212.71.13 |
nothing seriousby Teresa Wolff (no login)My 4 runner also has this noise. i was told by my mechanic that it is the sound of the injectors. It is nothing serios. TRD Superchargerby (no login)Dave: I have had the supercharger on my 97 SR5 5spd for almost a year. I have been very happy with it. There have been some pinging problems develope with 98/99 automatics. The problem is sporadic and appears to be related to some changes made in the ECU/emmissions equipment in 98. I do not know how widespread the problem is, but TRD is handling it on a case by case basis and apparently removing the fuel enhancement system on the trucks involved. Prior to 98, automatic had no pinging problems. Manuals tend to ping mildly if accelerating too fast in too high a gear. Personally, I would not let the pinging difficulty deter you. There are still many happy owners with 98 and 99 model years yet to report difficulty. Prices have been running around $2500, not including installation. As far as exhausts go, either TRD or Borla are fine systems. Unfortunately, many 99's have a dual catalytic converter system which means both systems have to be professionally installed and require modification. I am running stock headers, but I know of one person with Edelbrock headers. He likes them, but thjey are designed for the Tacoma and require some modifiacation to fit the 4Runner. I have heard the TRD headers have been delayed. I have more info on my web page: http://members.gcronline.com/rsherow/ Ron from IP address 208.249.71.178 |

4x4 Vans Rock!!!!!by Chris P. (no login)Can't say I know where to get info, but I can tell you a bit about them. First of all, they rock. Perhaps the most reliable ever made. 5-speed with manual hubs...way to cool. Fatal flaw is a steering pump leak which is conviently located above the alternator, hence figure replacing the alt. periodically. The best option ever was the dual sunroof, one in front and a regular plnitarium in the back, all electric of course. Havn't ever seen the sunroof option on the 4x4. Great for a camper conversion...and try to look for one from the mid-west free of rust. Good luck. from IP address 172.192.176.245 |
Considering buying new 4Runner SR5by (no login)Hi, I know that I am going to get some pro-4runner biased messages back posting this, but that's OK. People seem to be religious about their brand choice of SUV's. I am considering purchasing a new 99 4Runner SR5 4wd. What should I know about this car? OK, A specific 1999 4x4 4Runner questionby (no login)None of the dealers that I've talked to have been able to give me a straight answer: 1) What is the *exact* difference btw the 4WD on the Limited and the 4WD on the 4Runner. (Yes, I know Multimode vs. not Multimode but what exactly does that mean) 2) Can you drive the SR5 4x4, in 4WD High, on dry pavement? I would like to be able to switch in and out of 4WD in icy or rainy conditions on the highway. Can I do that with a 4x4 SR5? Do I risk "tearing out the transfer case"? from IP address 24.93.46.134 |
Multimode vs standard 4WD (long)by (no login)The multimode system uses an open center differential which allows all wheel drive on dry pavement. The standard system does not have a center differential. When it is in 4WD, the front and rear drive shafts turn at the same speed. As long as you are traveling in a straight line (even on dry pavement) there is no problem. The difficulty occurs when you try to turn. When turning, the front and rear drive shafts need to rotate at different speeds as the front and rear wheels are turning at different speeds. The center differential in the Multimode system allows this to occur. In the standard system a slick or low traction surface is required to let the front tires slip a bit to compensate for the differing forces front and rear in a turn. On dry surfaces, the front wheels will still try to slip and may end up hopping a bit. The drive shafts start to bind and heat up. The differentials also take some stress. You feel it as very sluggish and hard stering. In most situations the tires will scrub before there is real mechanical damage, but it does stress the system and result in premature wear. The Multimode system with the center differential lock activated behaves the same as the standard system. Yes you can shift into and out of 4WD with the standard system on snowy, icey, and wet roads. Nothing will fall out and the system will work fine. If you are traveling in a straight line, you can do it on dry road without a problem. If the road drys up or the snow is patchy, you should shift back into 2WD before turning. The real convenience of the Multimode system is it removes some thought from driving and most Americans don't like to think about their driving. You can just set it in the all WD mode and forget about it. With the standard system, you must apply the system as needed and remember to switch to 2WD as road conditions warrant. The difference is...by Marc montano (no login)I just purchased the 99 SR5 4x4 (highlander). It is pretty much loaded (all but leather and the new fulltime 4x4). The new fulltime 4x4 offered only on limited is just that...fulltime 4x4. No switching between 2wd and 4wd and yes that means driving in 4wd on dry pavement. Personally I prefer the "on the fly" switch from 2wd to 4wd. It's a proven function and works very very well. At times when I need the 4x4 quickly from 2wd I make sure my speed is below 25 and an easy smooth shift is all that is needed and instantly I can feel the front end pulling. I would want to see this new fulltime feature get some exposure and real time experience before I would consider it. Besides why change something that works great anyway? All for the extra convieniece of no shifting? Big deal. To me it's not worth the xtra $1500. Stick with the tried and proven. Less headache down the road and less to come out of your wallet. from IP address 162.10.96.152 |
My 2 cents...by Marc montano (no login)Scott, I have been researching ALL suv's for about a year now. I like to go 4 wheeling so that was certainly a consideration. The suv market is very competitive but some stand out and the SR5 is one of them. My biggest complaint about Toyota was the price. I've read many reviews, asked numerous owners, and my test drive won me over. There was no doubt in my mind I was getting a great suv with all the potential I needed with a few xtra's I wanted. What stuck in my mind and what was a huge plus was reliability and resale. Toyota was at the top of the suv hill from almost every source and the bottom line was this car was really tough to beat. So with all that in mind I went out to find a good deal. With patience, and many resources I proceeded to search for that great deal on a 99 SR5 4x4. It took me 4 months but I finally found my SR5. I was lucky to find all I wanted in the new "highlander" with pretty much everything except leather. The purchase price was $5K below MSRP. That put me at 31K out the door....yes It was more than maybe an explorer, or Rodeo but I feel this car is in a class of it's own (oh yeah that included the 7yr. 100K warranty). My point being there are good deals out there just be patient and do your homework, you'll find it. I've had this puppy for 8K miles and have already used one exceptional feature that has twice bailed me out big time. The "locking rear differential". Once in the middle of nowhere in mud and another time on a boat ramp covered in green slime. Both times my rear tire was spinning (4x4 was no big help) but once I engaged the lock I came out with ease! Awesome feature! Good luck....Marc from IP address 162.10.96.152 |

99 manual 0-60 time????????by (no login)I was just wondering what the actual time of a 4runner 0-60 is? I have heard many different times such as 9.1, 9.7, 10.0. No difference but...by Marc montano (no login)I test drove both with the standard 3.4 litre. The 5 spd had the advantage off the line especially if you popped the clutch to get a little rubber burn but through the gears that auto held it's own. The auto was very very smooth through each shift and had really good punch from 0-70. From 70 on they both lack some punch expecially to pass on a hill. I managed to take the same 4runner model SR5 with the supercharger for a test drive and was blown away. That puppy slapped me back into my seat and I was going 90 before I new what hit me. Amazing what a simple blower kit will do. Intake makes a bigger difference than I thought. I am seriously considering that supercharger. By the way, the test drive was with an auto so the 5spd SC would be a little faster! wow that TRD option has the competition wondering what they'll do...V8's would still have a tough time out performing that supercharger. The only draw backs I've heard are having to use premium fuel, a slight howl from the engine and increasing insurance rates some. Still a consideration when you feel all that power! How funny to pull up next to a mustang GT and go flying by! Wow! from IP address 162.10.96.152 |
Supercharger for 1998 4-runner limitedby (no login)Hello, I am considering the supercharger upgrade for my 3.4l V6 4-runner. I am really happy with your comments back in 1999, on a forum. I was allways slightly disappointed with the lack of punch this vehicle has, even though it is bulky. It looks like an expensive upgarde though at $2500US, excluding labor. In Canadian dollars this must be about a $5000 job. Based on your comments, I think I might give this a try! from IP address 199.166.230.90 |
98/99 4runner Susp. upgrade?by (no login)Has anyone who has a 98 or 99 4Runner done a suspension upgrade yet?? Reason I ask is, I am about to. I ordered the progressive springs for all 4 corners of my '99 from Performance Products. Along with 4 Bilstein's. Normally I would get Rancho 9000's like I had on my '93 which were great, but P.P. informed me today that there are NO Rancho 9000's that fit the '99. (At least not yet!) Just wondering if anyone has upgraded their susp. on a 98/99 and if so, how did it turn out!?? Thanks in advance, SLOAK from IP address 198.93.2.13 |
'99 SR5 A/M Parts?by (no login)Has anyone seen any aftermarket parts out yet for and '99 runners!? Maybe through Downey or Performance Products? Their catalogs all only go to '98. In particular, I want to upgrade my suspension with some coil springs at all 4 corners. Then I will add maybe some Rancho 9000's. Does anyone know if the upgrade coils from PP for a '98 will fit a '99?? Thanks, "SLOAK" from IP address 198.93.2.20 |
A/M Partsby (no login)I would call Downey or P. Products to be sure, but suspensions are esentially unchanged fro 96 through 99 so springs and shocks should work. Ron from IP address 208.249.71.206 |
