Supercharger on a 2000 Land Cruiser??

by blackjack (no login)

Anyone has one of these?? Is it worth the money?? I am also interested in the exhaust, but I don't want to make my vehicle too loud. Is the TRD one loud?? And is the TRD air filter better or the K&N?? Thanks a lot. Also, any suggestions on making my vehicle faster and handle better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Supercharger on a 2000 Land Cruiser??

by (no login)

I just wasted $50 on a K&N Filter. I was hoping to squeeze a couple of more MPG out of my '00 Cruiser, but I actually lost about 2 mpg both in town and on the freeway. I was even driving like a grandma(really light on the gas), but it was in vain. I just put the paper one back in and I'm back to about 16mpg at 75mph. Hopefully you haven't spent any money yet. . .

Re:free 1995 4-Runner/pickup service manual download

by (no login)

Any Public Library in your area would have the Factory service manual,Haynes,Chiltons,Mitchells and Toyota repair books.
There is also free AutoZone service manuals at:

http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/repair_info/repair_guide/repair_guide.jsp

Finally there is a free aftermarket 1995 4-Runner (22R-E and 3VZE) service manual at:

http://www.net-impress.com/4runner/cd

For scanned pages of factory service manuals for other engines:

http://www.brian894x4.com/Scannedmanual.html
http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/info/manuals/1KZ-TE
http://toyoefi.freeyellow.com/manual.html
http://www.grubinski.com/grubinski/manuals.html
http://www.hotrodder.com/kwkride/tech.html
http://www.autoshop101.com
http://www.mtv411.com/sitemap.htm

FSM (factory service manual)can be acquired in several ways:

Toyota Material Distribution Center
750 West Victoria St
Rancho Dominguez/Compton,CA 90220-5538
USA
Ph:1-800-622-2033 (outside CA)(M-F: 7-5 PST)
Ph:1-800-443-7656 (inside CA)
Ph:1-310-818-4630 (in or outside CA)
Speak to Beverly or Deloris
http://techinfo.toyota.com/public/main/mdc.html
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/FSM.shtml

1)buy a used one off e-bay
2)some Toyota dealerships may give you one or sell it for $10-20 (used) as most Toyota dealerships don't repair many old Toyotas and no longer need the service manual
3)some public libraries sell their old books as they are not in demand any longer
4)some free buy & sell classified papers, websites and bulletin boards may have some used ones for sale
5)some junk yards may have one laying around
6)some Toyota specialty garages may have one laying around and no longer use it as the vehicle may be too old and those mechanics probably have so much experience that they could publish their own factory service manual with corrections and "real world repair tips"
7)if someone has the FSM maybe they could scan all of the pages and post it on a site for all of us to download or view, like some of the links below.

Tried most combinations but not working. Can't obtain a manual in Aus. Can I please have a picture of the sensor cables on another 1990 Surf or a diagram.

transmission problem, or something else?

by (no login)

I have a 1988 4runner, manual 5-speed. I have this noise problem that has been intensifying over the past few months. Hard to expain...sounds like a grinding noise, but not really metallic. Or it could be described as a bad belt sound but not as high pitched. It usually happens when the car is in 1st and 2nd gear and the accelerator is pressed (also, sometimes rev gear). When you lift off of the accelerator it goes away. As of recently, it now makes the noise when the truck is first started and out of gear (but not as loud as when in gear and doesn't last long). Note that it only seems to happen when the truck is cold and hasn't been driven. After driving for about 5 to 10 minutes, it goes away. The noise seems to come from somewhere between the transmission and engine, hard to tell. Other than the noise, truck shifts and drives well. Does anyone know what could be wrong??

Re: transmission problem, or something else?

by Jim ASE Mastertech (no login)

YES... IF this is a 4cylinder the problem is the timimg chain tensioner and guides ... the noise is the chain rattling against the front engine cover.
The system uses a hydraulic chain tensioner and plastic guides... when the tensioner wears out...the plastic guides break... its an expensive repair...or an 8 hour project. BTW... this problem is caused bt using after market oil filters.. a BIG NO NO!!! the OEM filter uses an anti-drainback valve the prevents the oil pump from losing its prime after engine shut down.. That means dry restarts, and a delay in the chain tensioner operation every time you start the engine. Factory oil filters only people.

Tight rear end !

by (no login)

Hi All,

Just need some advice!

Recently I converted my 1991 4Runner from auto to 5 speed manual. All's well (finally) the only problem is that when in 4WD if I turn 1/2 to full lock to the left or the right the rear wheels seem to get very tight and skid. In 2wd its all ok only when it goes into 4wd.

Could this be the ratio is different from front to back ?

If so, do I change the front or the back.

Thanks for any help.

Michael

Re: Tight rear end !

by Jim ASE Mastertech (no login)

If you are on dry pavement (which is not intended for 4wd) this is normal.. its called driveline-windup when off road or on snow ect the wheels simply slip to release the stress... Make sure all the tires are a matched set!!!
using unmatched tires in a part time 4wd will destroy the transfer case.

rear abs computer

by erik (no login)

I have a 92 sr5. The fan broke on it and caused a lot of damage. One of the problems is that the rear abs warning light came on. A mechanic told me the abs computer needed to be replaced. Another mechanic said the computer and hydrolics needed to be fixed. Is it possible that a sensor is malfunctioning?
thanks a lot

1999 4Runner - Major Problems

by (no login)

I'm curious as to whether anyone else has had similar problems with their 4Runner, especially for the 1999 model. Mine is 2WD, Limited. I bought it new. Problems are with rear axel seal and crank shaft.

Shortly aftger buying my 4Runner, I heard a quiet ticking sound in the hood at idle. The Toyota servicer couldn't detect a problem. I finally gave up reporting it. I also felt a shuddering in the vehicle's rear when the brakes were applied. The Toyota servicer again could not detect a problem, and said it was just a characteristic of the ABS.

Now that I'm 1 month past the 5-year warranty and 70,000 miles (naturally!!), major problems have appeared:

There was a leak in the rear axle seal and it staurated the rear brakes. >$500 to fix. After that, the shuddering worsened. On the third day, the check engine light blipped on and off and the brakes smelled horrible. Took it back in. They adjusted the rear brakes, but could not find anything that would have caused the engine light to come on. On the fifth day, the engine light came on for 15 seconds. They said that unless it stays on for a full minute, the computer would not have had time to record what system the malfunction occurred in. Later that day, a very loud ticking noise began in the engine, but the check engine light was NOT on. They diagnosed broken parts around the crank shaft. >$800 to fix - IF the crank shaft itself is not damaged.

If anyone can provide any personal experiences, suggestions, etc, related to these problems, PLEASE do so!

A flashing check engine light is the engine misfire monitor.. (as per Global OBDll standards) it could be wires..plugs or injector failures... as for not recording a fault code in under a minute...horse ****...they are feeding you a line of crap..

Overheat

by Nathan Phillips (no login)

I was driving home yesterday and the car overheated. After pulling to the side and let it cool down, I was hopeing it was just a case of low coolant level. I started filling it up and the saw a small leak which looked like it was coming from the bottom of the block behind the the bottom pulley. It was late last night so I didn't have time to go over it. Would it be coolant running from the cracked head down the front of the bloke ?
