Regardless of anything/everything that went on, I have found in my old age that many people in the workplace, now, do not understand the 2-week rule.
It's pretty much written (as in workplace written policy), and if not, unwritten, that you cannot quit a job, ANYPLACE, in any business, without that notice. I'm making this point because this occurs in all industries and as I've worked in several industries. I've seen your situation before. I just saw it again, two days ago in retail (which is where I am now).
You could be the best, but you cannot quit a job without that notice and expect to get references. I don't know how --- I had that beaten into my head long ago, but I am seeing more and more younger people (yes, I'm stereotyping) getting po'd and walking out on the job and then cursing that they don't understand why they cannot get rehired, or referenced.
To break the stereotype, I did see a guy close to my age, just two months ago, do the same thing to get a better paying position --- he gave one day notice. What was incredulous to me is that he went to HR, having no idea that one-day notice is a 'no no', and asked if he could come back if the new job did not work out. HR couldn't believe they heard that. This guy wasn't leaving angry --- he just went for a better paying job and saw no reason to give notice. It just doesn't occur to people they need to be replaced and
Anyway, I won't keep belaboring the point. I just wanted people to be aware it had nothing to do with low-paying, cruddy, CNA jobs. This is a general workplace issue.
