Rent the movie "Guess Who's Coming For Dinner" with Sidney Poitier, Spencer Tracey, and Katherine Hepburn.
This is a great old flick that you may have already seen. Ask your Activities Director to show it for "Movie Day".
Get the family or close friend involved if possible in resolving this obstacle. In a calm, gentle manor try telling this resident that you don't see her skin color, only that she is a person in need of care like so many others in the LTC. The color of a person's skin is not what is important. What is important is that she is getting the care she needs and deserves and that you are willing to do this for her. Tell her you don't consider her skin color and she should not consider yours.
Ask her permission to be one of her caregivers and explain to her that this is what you want to do for her. Don't give up after the first attempt. It may take longer for this resident and those who were raised during the 1930's and up to finally come around.
Share some personal stories of accomplishments, your family, etc. and create a repore with this resident without providing care - just talking. In turn you should gain her trust and be able to provide the care she deserves. It is a great challenge, but one worth winning.
