I just got on the floor for my second week of training. I am not sure when the test is. I don't even know when and if I'll get paid. This is a nursing home that is training me. They promised a paycheck once you hit the floor and then told us they "made a mistake" and wasn't supposed to pay us at all. We'll see. Anyways, there is something I don't understand...They started to teach us the basics of bed making and some transport, they gave us some flashcards and sent us out on the floor. These flashcards tell you step by step how to "make a bed" for example. The instructor never went through the flashcards but told us that the skills test would be based on the cards and if we missed just one thing, the test would be over and we would fail. I am now on the floor with a bunch of CNA's that do not use a gait belt and will rarely wash their hands, giving the excuse that there is no time between patients. Don't get me wrong. I am sure they mean well, but if there are shortcuts, these nurses will take them. I have resorted to studying the examples from all places: YouTube. (Hey, whatever works). I just don't think I will be able to pass the test with this place teaching me, and I can't afford to go anywhere else. Can anyone give me any ideas? What is the skills test like? Do they really only give you 1 chance before you fail? One person told me to just do my best and don't worry about the cards. I think I can pass the written test but that is it.
