The DON has bought the idea of having a CNA/Activity Asst. This person would be responsible for setting up the dining rooms to function as multi purpose community type rooms within a SNF. Safe, diversionary supplies, materials and table top activities would be set up, maintained and managed by this person when structured calendar activities are not going on. A certain atmosphere and tone could be controlled with age appropriate music and selective, simple and engaging movie videos in this room. Think "Montessorri Centers" as in pre school, but using person appropiate supplies, resources and materials. Yes, "white lies" abound, but this can be a "busy" room! This CNA/Activity Asst. would ( while structured calendar events are going on) conduct 1:1 visits to implement leisure goals for folks who choose/cannot attend group activities. This Asst. would engage an agitated/anxious resident with redirection activity techniques PRN, that a CNA working the floor simply does not have the time to do. Would love to hear form some of you as to wether or not you think this position has credibility? AND yes this staff member could be asked to work a shift if needed, however I explained to the DON if this was done frequently, it would defeat the purpose.
