11/7/02 - JR assures Ernesto that all the guests are rich. Federico joins them just as he asks Ernesto what their wedding gift is. Federico chimes in with a lie that his father doesn't deny. Cristian tells his mother she must stop seeing El Colonel because Rafael saw them, stripped him of his administrative duties and has demanded that she repay the loan today. He tells her, in essence, that she doesn't have a right to happiness at his expense, that if she wants company at her age, Rafael is fine. He accuses her of not caring about him. After he leaves and Jenny arrives, she tells Jenny what happened. Jenny is not on Cristian's side, says if it had been Herminio, he would have defended his mother. Pablo and Wilson follow Maria's car again but are stopped by the police for speeding, but eventually lets them go when Pablo confesses he was chasing the girl he loves, to keep her from marrying a man she doesn't love. The cop tells him he's been in love once. Antonio looks for Pablo and the two find each other. Pablo tells him the work he has been doing, including working for Alcala. They talk about getting him into the wedding to talk to Maria and stop it, but Antonio tells him he can't tell her the truth because she would reject him. Pablo realizes that Antonio just wants to use him to get back at JR. Antonio admits that, says that JR played a trick on his son Alejo that landed him in jail, but Pablo would still be able to stop the wedding by lying for a few days. Pablo flatly refuses to be part of this game with JR. He says goodbye and Antonio tells him he shouldn't expect to find work when he returns to Colombia. At the same time Federico and his parents are talking. Maria overhears the first part of the conversation and discovers that Federico's grandfather didn't come because he was afraid a picture of him and JR would appear in the papers, as if they were intimate friends. She doesn't hear the rest, about the money, that JR told Federico he would have to renounce Maria's patrimonio if his grandfather didn't come to the wedding. Federico's parents feel that proves the kind of man JR is, and can't believe their son is marrying just for money. They call the house in bad taste. Federico says he is going to marry Maria, not JR or Ana. But, they tell him, their children will be JR's grandchildren. Federico assures them that when he is rich and powerful, they will thank him for what he is doing. Ana tells JR not to fuss about Federico's parents; Maria is marrying into a distinguished family. Back at the boarding house, Rodolfo tells Pablo and Wilson that his boss Federico is getting married the next day, says it is for money. Pablo says he assumes the girl is in love with his boss. He says he doesn't think so but he can't tell them why. He is sure, however, that the marriage won't be a happy one. Maria confronts Federico about the attitude of his parents' toward his father, that he is a man without class. Federico tells Maria that his family is proud of its name and JR comes from a lower class, but these things are important to his parents, not to him. He tells Maria he wouldn't marry her, knowing she carries another's child, if it did. She tells him she won't be responsible for what she does if they continue to treat her father badly. Maria starts to get ready for the wedding, recalls Pablo.

11/8/02. Ricardo gets Pablo into the grounds and Ferney lets Pablo into the wedding. He walks down the aisle, calls out Maria's name, tells her he wants to talk to her. There are the expected objections, but Maria goes off with Pablo. He tells her the entire truth: he isn't married, doesn't have a child, the clothes, house, yacht, etc. all belong to his boss, Antonio. He is an ascolta, una guardaespalda. He tells her exactly how everything happened, that he didn't want to lie but he loved her, and she told him in Cartagena she couldn't love a bodyguard. He swears he never talked to her father in Colombia. At first Maria doesn't seem to believe her, but then does. Still, she tells him that everything about him was a lie (as he had feared she would feel), says she doesn't love him, couldn't love him, feels only hate. He leaves, meets up with Ricky and tells him it was a disaster. Meanwhile, Federico's parents have left because of the scandal and Federico has learned from JR that Pablo is a bodyguard. He can't believe it, can't believe Maria is pregnant with a bodyguard's baby. Maria talks to her father and he, finally, admits to her that he lied about talking to Pablo because he didn't want her to know that she had fallen in love with a bodyguard.

23-05-2001 María le informa a Federico que ya no se casará con él. Pablo le dice a Antonio que no quiere hablar con él. Antonio le pide disculpas y le propone volver a Colombia con su ayuda. Pablo le dice a Wilson que volverá a Colombia y lo invita a volver con él. 24-05-2001 Tulia le dice a Arturo que es mejor que no se vuelvan a ver. José Ramón sostiene una fuerte discusión con Ernesto y Sara. José Ramón despide a Ferney. Cristian le cuenta a Rafael que su mamá terminó con el coronel. 25-05-2001 Pablo llama a Estela Hernández para averiguar por el paradero de Genaro. Genaro encuentra a Adela en un cultivo de tomates. Cristian y Cindy preparan el encuentro con Tulia y Rafael para oficializar la relación. Pablo y Antonio regresan a Colombia. Pablo llega a su casa mientras Cristian, Cindy, Tulia y Rafael están comiendo.
29-05-2001 María le reclama a Ana por haberle mentido. Ernesto obliga a Federico a firmarle un pagaré por el dinero que le debe y se enfrentan por el comportamiento de Juan Ramón. Genaro logra dar con Adela en un cultivo de tomates. Pablo se despide de Wilson y de Miami. María recuerda preocupada como Pablo en sus conversaciones si dejó entrever quién era en realidad. 30-05-2001 José Ramón le propone a Federico trabajar para él en Colombia y acuerdan las condiciones económicas. Cindy y Cristian están a punto de confesar su romance cuando Pablo llega de sorpresa. Silvana le pregunta a María si quiere averiguar quién es en realidad Pablo Guerrero. Cindy se las ingenia para que su romance con Cristian no se sepa. 31-05-2001 Tulia le cuenta a Pablo todo lo que ha ocurrido con Rafael y El Coronel. Por fin María acepta hablar con José Ramón. En una discusión de Ana y José Ramón, María se entera del nombre de algunos familiares de su padre que aún viven en Colombia: Rafael Casilimas. María le anuncia a sus padres que se va de la casa. Antonio le cuenta a Ligia y a Alejo que Pablo fracasó con María. 01-06-2001 Pablo le confiesa a Cindy que María no lo perdonó. Antonio le cuenta a Ligia que le dará a Pablo un cargo similar al de Alejo. Inmigración llega a las bodegas de José Ramón. Nestor se sorprende al ver que Pablo no está dispuesto a aguantarle más a Alejo. Alvarito y Susy son testigos de la primera discusión entre ellos.
04-06-2001 Antonio le cuenta a Pablo que María Alcalá no se casó. Rafael acepta que María viva en su casa siempre y cuando se cambie el apellido a "Simbaqueba". María se reporta con Silvana. Antonio busca que Ligia le de una nueva oportunidad. Rodolfo no accede a volver con Federico a Colombia. El Coronel aconseja a Pablo sobre María y le cuenta todo lo que sucedió con Tulia. Federico intenta localizar a María en casa de Silvana. María y Natalia se van de compras a San Victorino. 05-06-2001 Pablo y Alejo tienen un nuevo encontrón. Federico le pide a José Ramón despedir a Rodolfo. Alejo y Ligia se encuentran en el consultorio de la sicóloga. María cambia a un look más "pobre". María conoce a Cindy en unas condiciones algo adversas. Antonio supera con creces una dura prueba de fidelidad. Cindy se muestra celosa por la reacción de Cristian con María. Tulia le cuenta a Pablo sus sospechas sobre Cindy y Cristian. Cindy empieza a ponerle a María "deberes hogareños". Antonio recibe la visita de una mujer en su hotel.
USA, 11-15/02.
11/11/02 - JR tells Maria she will marry Federico or cease to be his daughter. She continues to refuse, feels sick, is taken to the hospital and loses her baby. There she tells Federico she isn't going to marry him. Pablo goes back to the outdoor restaurant and tells Wilson it is over, Maria loved a rich man, not him. As he leaves Wilson, Antonio stops him: Pablo tells him he was right: Maria couldn't love a bodyguard. Pablo says, ironically, he is sorry but he couldn't stop the wedding. Antoniosays he is sorry, offers to give Pablo the money to pay for his lodgings and rake him back to Colombia with him. Later, Pablo shares drinks with Rodolfo and confesses who he is. Rodolfo tells him that Maria would be better off with him than with Federico, realizes now how Federico has used him since college and isn't a real friend. Cindy tells her father everybody in the barrio knows he wants his money back because of El Colonel, assures him she is over Pablo and is about to tell him she loves Cristian when he tells her he hopes the next man in her life isn't from the barrio or a family not worth the trouble (i.e. Tulia's). Meanwhile, Tulia continues to refuse to answer El Colonel's phone calls, having Jenny tell him she isn't home. Tulia breaks up with Arturo, explains it is because of Rafael's attitude and the effect on Cristian. JR and Ana talk with Federico's parents and end up trading insults. JR tells Federico's father that his father was the worst President ever, destroyed the country's economy. Then he tells them that the wedding was broken up by a bodyguard who stole Federico's novia from under his nose and bested him in a business deal. Then Federico's parents insult Maria and JR tells them he hopes they never need money because he'd rather loan money to Antonio Santamarino. As they get up and start walking away, JR pushes first Federico's JR attacks Ferney, tells him to follow Maria's every step and tell him what she does. Ferney refuses. JR fires him. Ferney says that is better than being a sapo. JR tells him he will stay, at half-salary, until he finds a replacement. Antonio goes to the police to denounce JR's business for hiring illegals.

11/12/02 - The policeman tells Antonio what happens to those who hire illegals. Antonio can't believe it and the policeman tells him to grow up.
Ana tells JR they must marry Maria as soon as possible to Federico. JR disagrees, says the one good thing about the whole mess is that he won't have to deal with that family which he wishes would leave the house at once. Later, Maria and Federico come downstairs. Don Ernesto (Chato - Federico's father) tells Federico they are leaving. JR says some rude things to them, to the effect that he can't wait.
Ana and Maria talk. Ana tells Maria she didn't want her to make the same mistake as she did, a mistake she has paid for all her life. When Maria accuses her of being unhappy because of her foolish class prejudices, Ana reminds her that JR, at least, had money and if class and money didn't matter to Maria, she would have left with Pablo.
Federico and his parents talk. They tell him that JR pushed them in the pool the night before. Federico tells them that is what JR is like, the same has happened to him. They can't believe that he would accept so much bad behavior for money. He points out that they spent the night in the house after the incident; when Ernesto replies they didn't have enough money to pay for an acceptable hotel in Miami, Federico remarks that it can be uncomfortable to ignore money. Then Ernesto makes his son sign some kind of paper re the money he owes his father.
Federico talks with JR, asks what he is to do, he's lost everything: Maria, his parents, etc. JR tells Federico he needs him more than ever to destroy Antonio Santamarina. JR wants Federico to go to Colombia and they negotiate the terms: apartment, car, Rodolfo, 20% of the earnings.
El Colonel visits Rafael, accuses him of using threats against Tulia to get him out of the way. Rafael isn't ashamed of what he did, says Tulia was interested in El Colonel only because he was "new". El Colonel tells Rafael he won't give her up so easily; Rafael says neither will he (which makes the eavesdropping Cristian smile). Genaro looks for and finds Adela in an horticultural area of some kind. He tells her he isn't a coward, stayed behing in Houston to wait for the money he needed, while he was waiting, he realized he didn't want to become an American, go to Miami, etc. All he wants is to be with her forever. She kisses him.
In Miami, Antonio gives Pablo a passport so he can return to Colombia but warns him that he won't ever be able to get a visa to return. Pablo says goodbye to Wilson who gives him a letter for Jenny.
Cristian sets up a dinner for his mother, Rafael and Cindy. Tulia guesses the reason. Cindy tells Cristian her father knows he is interested in somebody but not whom, and expects the man to be worth the trouble. Cristian tells her not to worry, that Rafael will soon be his stepfather, is sure that his bad opinion of him has changed because of what he has done for the business.
Maria drives her car to a spot by the ocean (where Pablo had been before thinking of Maria's telling him in Colombia that she couldn't love a bodyguard, repeating that to him at the wedding) and recalls times with Pablo when he obviously wanted to tell her the truth but couldn't.
Pablo and Antonio arrive in Colombia. Just as Cristian is about to announce his engagement to Cindy, Pablo knocks on the door. After the greetings, Cristian tries to continue but Cindy interrupts, tells Pablo they are all there because El Colonel and her father fought for Tulia and her father won and she and Cristian wanted to say how happy they are [or something like that]. Both Tulia and Rafael are offended and leave the table. Pablo follows his mother. Cristian goes into the kitchen and talks to Cindy. He, obviously, realizes what she did and why and tells her he has proved his feelings toward her time and time again, but he is tired of the way she is treating him. He tells her it is over.
Maria tells Silvana she wants to find herself, to discover what she can become on her own, doesn't know if she still loves Pablo, doesn't even know his full name of where he lives. All she really knows is that she doesn't want to go home.
