Do you have any ideas or suggestion to honor a friend's dog?

by

My friend, Peggy and her husband, Harold, had their 13 1/2 yr. old bichon, Lucy, passed away two days ago. Peggy and Harold did not have any kids and centered their life around Lucy. I would love to honor Lucy or do something for Peggy and Harold. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Have you ever had this happen to a friend of yours and how did you help them through? Thanks, Susie

Are you all aware of the Texas Personal Property Tax to be voted on November 3rd

by

This seems crazy to me. It is like being double taxed. You get taxed when you buy the house or item and then taxed again each year for owning it. I lived in Virginia and we had Personal Property Tax for our houses that was expanded to other items to the point that the Taxpayers were no longer being able to live there. We were lucky because they had a clause that the active duty military could not be taxed but, if we had retired there then that Personal Property Tax would have applied to our house, our cars, our boat, etc. So you may want to read this one and vote accordingly. Be sure to read it because they have a way of sneaking in these subjects attached to other things and worded to where we are not sure if we are voting for or against. I can send you info to your website from a friend who sent it to me to alert me. Just an FYI...so we do not have to dig deeper in our pockets to pay Personal Property Taxes. Maybe they can set up a State Operated Lottery to gain more money or maybe someone will think of another solution beside pay and pay and pay. Hugs, Susie

SGHS produced some great, fun-loving Americans and we are not finished yet. We are only mid-way through our lives. It will be interesting and fun to see what happens in the second half of our lives.

Showboaters

by

Showboater Alumni

Were you a former Showboater; a parent of a former Showboater; dated a Showboater, or had a secret crush on a Showboater? Then the 2009 Showboaters are looking for you! It is Big Show time again and the Showboaters are in preparation for this years show, and the Tradition of Excellence established long ago continues. Using professional lighting, sound, and video, the Big Show is no ordinary high school production.

In association with the SGHS Choir Booster Club, the Showboaters are forming an Alumni Association to support the continuation of this outstanding program. Memories, friendships, and experiences shared have likely lasted long since your Showboater days. The Alumni group will give you an opportunity to reestablish those old or not so old friendships. A website is being developed to share memories, post pictures, reconnect with former Showboaters through an Alumni directory, and support the Tradition of Excellence that is the South Garland Showboaters. Go to www.sghschoir.com and follow the links to the Showboater Alumni page.

Economic instability has hurt everyone, and the Showboaters are not immune. In order to insure the successful continuation of the program and Big Show, we are seeking the help of the Alumni. We need the assistance of those that established the Showboater tradition.

There are a number of ways you can help:

1. $20 donation, Name and graduating year in program

2. $35 donation, Name and graduating year in program and 2 tickets to the show

3. $50 donation, Name and graduating year in program, 2 tickets to the show and a Showboater t-shirt.

4. $100 donation, Name and graduating year in program, 4 tickets to the show, Tshirt and video.

5. Purchase one of the Show program advertisements for your business or dedicate it to your graduating class, add pictures, and challenge other classes to do the same.

Your tax deductible donations may be made in cash; checks made payable to GISD or visit the website at www.sghschoir.com and follow the links to the Showboater website and make your credit card payment through Paypal.

Please forward this message to other former members, post to SGHS reunion, facebook and myspace sites

The Showboaters thank you for your support.

If you still have a home phone do you pay extra each month for 'Touch Tone' dialing? Verizon says that most people in Texas don't have touch tone phone so if you use one you pay extra each month. I just find it hard to believe that most people in Texas don't have touch tone phones so ya'll ask around and see if you can anyone that does.

No. What I mean is does your land line phone company charge you extra for using a touch tone phone? If you do not have a land line phone then the question would not pertain to you. But if you know anyone who still has a land line phone company you could ask them if they know about the charge.

Verizon charges you $1.50 a month for 'Touch Call'. That's what they have started calling it 'Touch Call'. The lady at Verizon said that is because most people in Texas have rotary dial phones.

I've been reconsidering

by

I know what you mean Ginger. I've been going over my phone bill lately, and it's ridiculous. I'm paying for a land line because I'm too old & set in my ways...and just plain scared to give it up. And I live in an area where metro/long distance service is a requirement. So, it's expensive - $75 or so - each month.
Why don't I just cancel? Because I'm used to the way a land line sounds. The receivers are better than cell phones, and you don't have that 2-way radio thing going on.
But....is it worth $75 a month?????? I'm thinking not. Then again, if I cancel it, then regret it, what then? Hundreds of $$$ to reinstate?

And only $55 is actual service - the rest is taxes.

I would bet the phone cos are receiving lots of cancellations due to the slow economy.

ps: Yes, I pay for this 'high tech' touch service - yipee!!

Re: Phone via cable

But don't you have to "bundle" (pay for additional services ie. internet or cable tv service) to get the $29.95 phone rate? You can do something similar with Verizon.

long distance just across the road

by ginger

We paid extra each month to call the neighbor across the road so I know what you mean about that expanded local calls charge.

We have a device that links the cell phone to the home phone. Now when people call the real phones ring. Someone said 'But you won't be listed in the phone book anymore'. Yep and we won't be paying for touch tone phone service, or local long distance (across the oil top) or any of the other extra fees plus I got to tell Verizon we don't need you anymore. That was WONDERFUL. Even cutting off their service was silly. Took them 7 days to respond and they haven't actually gotten the service disconnected yet they say they are working on the request.

Oh and att gave us 1000 extra minutes this month for porting our home number over to the cell phone and booting verizon.

Good idea

by

I've read about that option. It is definitely worth considering. We live in a rural area - there is no cable service, and verizon has not, or will it ever, install any fiber optic cables here. We're stuck with 'high priced everything'.
I'm not really complaining because there are also benefits. Like....our water bill is only $26 in the heat of the summer.

I sure hate to hear about Dr. Hittson. He was a good friend to my family.

SGHS Grad makes good

by

Check out the new cd by Erin McCarley, a SGHS grad, (though years after us). Here is a article on her from the Wall Street Journal on 1/8/09 (those northern guys can't get the town right - Garland).

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT JANUARY 8, 2009 The Marketing of Erin McCarley
By JIM FUSILLI
The opening tracks of Erin McCarley's "Love, Save the Empty" (Universal Republic), her debut album released on Tuesday, suggest she fits somewhere between Fiona Apple and Colbie Caillat, a landscape that accommodates pop that's clever as well as cloying and calculated. But if on first blush the disc is too formulaic to be taken very seriously, in time it emerges as something more original and substantial. Ms. McCarley is an interesting songwriter, and as a singer she knows how to use the music that surrounds her.
Tune In
Listen to songs from Erin McCarley's debut album, "Love, Save the Empty":
Pony (It's OK)Hello/GoodbyeLove, Save the EmptyShe is also enveloped by an aggressive marketing campaign. Ms. McCarley was on David Letterman's show Tuesday. The disc's opening track, "Pony (It's OK)," which was available for free on iTunes, will appear in episodes of the TV shows "Ghost Whisperer," "One Tree Hill" and "Privileged." Other songs will turn up in "Grey's Anatomy." The title track is featured in the theatrical trailer for, and a key scene in, the forthcoming "He's Just Not That Into You," starring Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck and Scarlett Johansson. Amazon, AOL, MySpace and Clear Channel are celebrating the album's launch.
And the hype is piling high. A remarkably nonsensical sentence that appeared on the online publication Venus Zine -- "She's possibly created a new genre of music" -- is featured prominently in her promo material. Since hearing Ms. McCarley, Universal Republic's president said in a press release, "Our world has never been the same."
Such a rollout is just the kind that turns off thoughtful listeners -- and that would be a shame. Though too coy by half in "Pony (It's OK)," the opening track, Ms. McCarley's vocals have an appealing bite later in the disc, and the punchy arrangements crafted by producer Jamie Kenney and crack Nashville-based musicians give these pop songs a depth that demands repeated investigation. As the album unfolds, we hear the kind of ingenuity that characterized Feist's "The Reminder" and Ms. Apple's "Extraordinary Machine." The Beatles are an influence on several songs, as Mr. Kenney's string and brass arrangements enrich the already catchy tracks; for example, the plucked strings on "Hello/Goodbye" are a delight.
A 29-year-old native of Garrison, Texas, Ms. McCarley began preparing for her solo career in San Diego, singing occasionally in local groups and honing her songwriting skills while working in retail. "I could've released an album four years ago," she told me when we spoke by phone last week. "But songwriter friends told me, 'Don't waste your time on songs that don't feel 100% right. Keep holing up in your house and keep writing.' It was super-frustrating, but I just kept at it."
What eventually became "Love, Save the Empty" began to crystallize when Ms. McCarley met Mr. Kenney at a dinner party in Los Angeles. "He was looking for a project," she said. "He was ready to throw himself at something. We walked to the beach and I played him some of my songs." They began working together, making Nashville their base. "Jamie and I spent two years sitting on the piano bench trying to figure out what to do."
As they cut the record without any outside funding -- Mr. Kenney pulled together a band for the sessions -- Ms. McCarley understood she could have a level of control over her career. "It wasn't a mindless process. It's not like I'm 18. We knew what we wanted." They sent out a six-song sampler to industry insiders and posted some songs on Ms. McCarley's MySpace page. A showcase performance at last year's South by Southwest Festival resulted in a bidding war for her disc.
Having a finished album they could distribute without a major-label marketing push, Ms. McCarley and Mr. Kenney negotiated from a position of strength. "I didn't need a record deal," she said. "I was so vocal in saying [to the label] 'I'm licensing this project to you and I have no intention of splitting these songs apart. If you like it, great, and if you don't, then we're not the right match."
Though she's positioned now as a pop singer with an eye toward a hit single or two, Ms. McCarley's lyrics add an air of gravitas to her work. Heartache and turmoil caused by love's demands seem her favored themes, and even the upbeat tunes reveal that she doesn't take much at face value.
"I write from inspiration, not a sense of duty," she said. "I'm not somebody who tortures myself on purpose, but in my life I feel a bit weathered. I don't get overly excited and go crazy when I hear about the opportunities. I'm trying to relish the moment."
Ms. McCarley may give a better glimpse of her long-range potential when she goes on tour beginning next week. (See www.erinmccarley.com for dates.) She'll be on stage with only two backing musicians. Thus the album's gloss will be stripped away and her songs, as well as her voice, will stand on their own. The bet here is that she'll sound just fine.

Aloha

by

Aloha, My Name is Dave Mulkey. I went to Garland schools from 1st grade to my junior year. I went to S.G.H.S. until my senior year.My sister became gravely ill, and we had to be close to the Mayo clinic so we move to Rochester, Minnesota. I went my senior year in Minnesota, and I already had my SGHS senior ring. I came back after studying broadcast communications at the U of M, and Brown. I came back to Dallas to work for CBS Records, and here it is alot of years later, and I'm still on Maui. Mike Maberry and I moved here together as room mates and we're still best friends. I would like to communicate with any one who wants to. My emails are "bubbamulkey@yahoo.com "paiabay@yahoo.com "cybercopshawaii.vpweb.com/"
