Response to What other pellets did you use?

long story. first, before i improved my own shooting, i tried
gamo hunter (good)
gamo magnum (no good)
and 2 other gamos that come in a sample pack (no good)
and beeman hollow pt (same as tech force hollow pt)(good)
daisy precision wadcutters (ok)
daisy hollow pt (ok)
crossman wadcutters (walmart) (ok)
crossman hollow pt (walmart) (ok)

after i improved my shooting, i added 'the edge' from archer, (wadcutters) and they were as good as any others, but i had not tried the daisies again because i thought they were ho-hum because of their weight variation.

last night, after seeing 2 inch groups at 10 yds with the 10.5grain crossman precision, i decided to try all my pellets again, three five-shot groups with each.

the daisy precision wadcutters are the best (for me) and the edge from archer are 2nd best (for me). then all the others (except the flyaway crosman 10.5 round nose) were roughly the same.

btw, almost all of the above pellets are made in china except maybe gamo (not sure)

in general, all the pellets were ho hum, and i had sorted the daisies by weight (they varied a lot, from 7.2grains to 7.8 grains, which i thought was an issue.

it wasn't

reading james house's chart, the gamo hunter and the daisies have wider skirts (about .178, i think) where the crossman premiers have the narrowest skirt in the business (around .171)

i particularly got the heavy crossman premier round nose because i'm gonna shoot a silhouette tournament august 1 if i am adequately recovered from my upcoming rotator cuff surgery (i've had it before, so no surprises there).

the edge from archer are generally good, but i believe i have a barrel that's looser than normal (as evidenced by the great performance of the pellets with wider skirts).

sooo, if i find a willing machinist to drill me a barrel squasher (or find a drill bit the precise diameter of my barrel) i'm gonna do a choke job.

i know what i'm about to say borders on blasphemy, but i'm gonna squash some of my pellets (from nose to tail) with my very cheap chinese micrometer and see if they get wider at the skirt. if they do, i'll have a new winter hobby. i wonder at what point this becomes lunacy.

a person has to have a holy grail to search for; otherwise there's no point in getting up each day.
